Zusammenfassung: | In the first history of laywomen and the church in colonial Mexico, Jessica L. Delgado shows how laywomen participated in and shaped religious culture in significant ways by engaging creatively with gendered theology about women, sin, and guilt in their interactions with church sacraments, institutions, and authorities. Taking a thematic approach, using stories of individuals, institutions, and ideas, Delgado illuminates the diverse experiences of urban and rural women of Indigenous, Spanish, and African descent. By centering the choices these women made in their devotional lives and in their relationships to the aspects of the church they regularly encountered, this study expands and challenges our understandings of the church's role in colonial society, the role of religion in gendered and racialized power, and the role of ordinary women in the making of colonial religious culture |

Taking a thematic approach, using stories of individuals, institutions, and ideas, Delgado illuminates the diverse experiences of urban and rural women of Indigenous, Spanish, and African descent. By centering the choices these women made in their devotional lives and in their relationships to the aspects of the church they regularly encountered, this study expands and challenges our understandings of the church's role in colonial society, the role of religion in gendered and racialized power, and the role of ordinary women in the making of colonial religious culture Catholic Church / Mexico / History / Spanish colony, 1540-1810 Katholische Kirche (DE-588)2009545-4 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1540-1810 gnd rswk-swf Catholic women / Mexico / History / Spanish colony, 1540-1810 Indigene Frau (DE-588)4446288-8 gnd rswk-swf Geschlechterrolle (DE-588)4071776-8 gnd rswk-swf Rassismus (DE-588)4076527-1 gnd rswk-swf Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 gnd rswk-swf Laienbewegung (DE-588)4166471-1 gnd rswk-swf Mission (DE-588)4039567-4 gnd rswk-swf Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 gnd rswk-swf Mexiko (DE-588)4039058-5 gnd rswk-swf Mexiko (DE-588)4039058-5 g Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 s Katholische Kirche (DE-588)2009545-4 b Mission (DE-588)4039567-4 s Laienbewegung (DE-588)4166471-1 s Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 s Indigene Frau (DE-588)4446288-8 s Geschlechterrolle (DE-588)4071776-8 s Rassismus (DE-588)4076527-1 s Geschichte 1540-1810 z DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-107-19940-8 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781108185639 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
