Zusammenfassung: | The Arctic was long imagined as an otherworldly place, thousands of miles from the warmth and familiarity of home, and nineteenth-century Britons were fascinated by the notion of the heroic explorer voyaging through harsh terrain in pursuit of the Northwest Passage. But the mapping of this vast uncharted territory was only part of the fascination with the Arctic; Explorers and those who eagerly followed their perilous progress were also fascinated by the unknown, by the dreams and ghosts that might materialize there. The narratives of Arctic exploration that we are all familiar with today are just the tip of the iceberg, argues Shane McCorristine, and there are a great many more mysterious stories beneath the surface. In contrast to oft-told tales of heroism and disaster, The Spectral Arctic reveals the hidden stories of dreaming and haunted explorers, of frozen mummies, of rescue balloons, visits to Inuit shamans, and of the entranced female clairvoyants who traveled to the Arctic in search of John Franklin’s lost expedition. Through new readings of archival documents, exploration narratives, and fictional texts, these stories reflect the complex ways that men and women actually thought about the Arctic in the past. This revisionist historical account also allows us to make sense of current cultural and political concerns in the Canadian Arctic about the long-lost Franklin Expedition and the recent rediscovery of the two ships |

spelling | McCorristine, Shane 1983- Verfasser (DE-588)1032134836 aut The spectral Arctic a history of dreams and ghosts in polar exploration Shane McCorristine London UCL Press 2018 x, 265 Seiten Illustrationen 24 cm txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references and index The Arctic was long imagined as an otherworldly place, thousands of miles from the warmth and familiarity of home, and nineteenth-century Britons were fascinated by the notion of the heroic explorer voyaging through harsh terrain in pursuit of the Northwest Passage. This revisionist historical account also allows us to make sense of current cultural and political concerns in the Canadian Arctic about the long-lost Franklin Expedition and the recent rediscovery of the two ships Franklin, John 1786-1847 (DE-588)118692844 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1849-1859 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 2014 gnd rswk-swf Entdeckung (DE-588)4014841-5 gnd rswk-swf Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 gnd rswk-swf Expedition (DE-588)4129116-5 gnd rswk-swf Schamanismus (DE-588)4052062-6 gnd rswk-swf Erebus Schiff, 1826- (DE-588)7840276-1 gnd rswk-swf Mesmerismus (DE-588)4038778-1 gnd rswk-swf Terror Schiff, 1813- (DE-588)7840277-3 gnd rswk-swf Polargebiete (DE-588)4076200-2 gnd rswk-swf Nordwestpassage (DE-588)4042602-6 gnd rswk-swf John Franklin Arctic Expedition (1845-1851) Apparitions / Arctic regions Shamanism / Arctic regions Apparitions Discoveries in geography Shamanism Ghosts Parapsychology Arctic Regions / Discovery And Exploration Northwest Passage Ghosts / Arctic regions Franklin, John 1786-1847 (DE-588)118692844 p Nordwestpassage (DE-588)4042602-6 g Expedition (DE-588)4129116-5 s Geschichte 1849-1859 z DE-604 Erebus Schiff, 1826- (DE-588)7840276-1 s Terror Schiff, 1813- (DE-588)7840277-3 s Entdeckung (DE-588)4014841-5 s Geschichte 2014 z Polargebiete (DE-588)4076200-2 g Schamanismus (DE-588)4052062-6 s Mesmerismus (DE-588)4038778-1 s Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 s Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, mobi 978-1-78735-249-0 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, PDF 978-1-78735-245-2 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, epub 978-1-78735-248-3 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, html 978-1-78735-250-6 V:DE-576;B:DE-21 application/pdf http://swbplus.bsz-bw.de/bsz510681247inh.htm 20180928153259 Inhaltsverzeichnis V:DE-576;B:DE-21 application/pdf http://swbplus.bsz-bw.de/bsz510681247kla.htm 20180928153300 Klappentext |
