Pastoralism and Climate Change in East Africa provide
systematic and robust empirical investigations on the impac
of climate change on pastoral production systems, as well a
participating in the ongoing debate over the efficacy c
traditional pastoralism. This book is an initial product of th
Project Building Knowledge to Support Climate Chang
Adaptation for Pastoralist Communities in East Afric
implemented by the Centre for Climate Change Studies of th
University of Dar es Salaam with support from the Ope
Society Initiative for Eastern Africa.
Traditional pastoralism has proved to be a resilient and uniqu
system of adaptations in a dynamic process of unpredictabl
climatic variability and continuous human interactions with th
natural environment in dryland ecosystems. Pastor*
adaptations and climate-induced innovative copin
mechanisms have strategically been embedded in th
indigenous social structures and resource management valu
systems. Pastoral livelihoods have, nevertheless, becom
increasingly vulnerable to climate change impacts as a resu
of prolonged marginalization and harmful extern*
interventions. The negative effect of global climate chang
has been an added dimension to the already prevailing crisi
in the pastoral livelihood system, which is substantially drive
by non-climatic factors of internal and external pressures c
change such as population growth, bad governance am
shrinking rangelands lost to competing activities.
