WE HAVENT LEFT We Haven’t Left profiles nine individuals from different generations who were either born in the United States or moved to the country later in life. Their lives appear as success stories-they all received a good education, found fulfilling careers, and have stable incomes. But despite their varying experiences, they all share the same desire to connect their lives with Latvia. «We have not left,» they say. Eager to share their knowledge and expertise, all of them are searching for ways to return to their homeland or the birthplace of their parents. The journey back home is not always easy. It brings not only the joy of a reunion, but also misunderstandings, jealousy, and fear. Author Tatjana Žagare-Vītiņa is a Latvian journalist who moved from Latvia to Michigan in 2005 and has been writing for various Latvian publi cations. The author’s first book, To Be Heard: Stories from Zvannieki, came out in 2015. It tells the story of the Zvannieki home for orphaned children, located near Cēsis, Latvia, which was co-founded by pastor and theologian Juris Cālītis and his wife Sandra. 285
