SUMMARY
Nicolae Enciu, Part of Greater Romania. Bessarabia and the
Bessarabians from the Great Union to the Soviet ultimative notes.
Without the claim or intent of completeness, this volume is aimed at
providing the readers with a more accurate and objective overview of the
interwar period in the history of Bessarabia, using as a foundation for its analysis
original archive materials and documents, statistics, synthesis, monographs and
studies presented in the bibliographic essay accompanying the work, and the
notes in the footer of the text. At the same time, representing an attempt to
synthesize our scientific preoccupations in the field of interwar period, the
present study also includes a part of the results of investigations published over
time, especially in the compartments regarding the demographics of Bessarabian
population and the elements of European modernity in the interwar Bessarabian
daily life.
Aiming for an account as close to realities of the period between the two
world wars as possible, the work analyzes and highlights not only its numerous
and various achievements but also, equally, its many difficulties, limitations and
even mistakes, inherent to a historical period too short and too agitated to be able
to produce radical qualitative transformations.
Nevertheless, our entire exposure is based on the philosophy of
historical optimism as a dominant of the interwar period. As stated in the
speciality literature, the behavior in the two parts of the European continent -
Western Europe and Central-South-Eastem Europe - had, after the First World
War, many specificities. One of them consisted in the fact that while in the West
the moral-creative tone was expressed in terms of the feeling of decadence, as
did Osvald Spengler (1880-1936) in his famous work "Decline of the West", in
Central-South-Eastem Europe the historical optimism was more dominating.
This was due to the fact that the national energy that had been channeled into the
struggle for liberation and national unity before 1918 could be directed towards
constructivism and creativity in all sectors of modern society.
Following the precepts of the theory and methodology of the Romanian
interwar sociology school of Prof. Dimitrie Gusti, we structured our analysis on
"settings" and "manifestations", a method used also in the process of writing of
the fundamental work in four volumes Encyclopedia of Romania (1938-1943),
which recommends the mobilization of all data and information in the fields of

geography, demography, history, psychology, economic, cultural, legal and
administrative-political sciences, to characterize historical events and processes.
Thus, the first compartment of the monograph gives an overview of the
geographical location, the climate and picturesque of Bessarabia, and it is
followed by the exposure of the occupations of the population by the main areas
of activity. The third part of the work contains the main characteristics of the
demographic evolution of the Bessarabian population. A special section of the
monograph analyzes the elements of European modernity in the interwar
Bessarabian daily life, and it is followed by the exposition of the main aspects of
political life during the same period. The sixth compartment of the work presents
the process of Bessarabia's spiritual rebirth. The international context of
Bessarabia’s evolution in interwar Romania is exposed in the seventh
compartment, with only the immediate and lasting consequences of the Soviet
ultimative notes from June 26-28, 1940 being analyzed.
Occasioned by the celebration of a century from the Great Union of
1918, this work is intended to be a brief overview of the achievements of
national historiography in the field of study of the interwar period of Bessarabia’
history, - along with numerous other attempts in recent years by historians on
both sides of the Prut, - as well as an impulse and a call to further in-depth
investigations of an ever-instructive and current historical period.
