INSTEAD OF INTRODUCTION
- SOME EXPLANATIONS
There is an old saying that if something is not written down and published
- it is as though it hasn’t happened at all! For a long time, I thought about
this and finally decided to sit down and put on paper, i.e. in the memory of
my laptop as is the case in the modem world, some events and happenings
from my private life and from my professional life as a journalist, politician,
and a diplomat.
This triad of professions has had many mutually reinforcing aspects. In
a way, the three professions are intertwined by the competencies involved,
which has offered significant possibilities for interesting and unforgettable
events to occur in my life. Some of these I will present in the book that
you are now holding. They will be presented to you so that they are not
forgotten, even though some happened decades ago. Therefore, I decided to
name this ‘handwriting’ of mine: UNFORGETTABLE.
They say a photograph speaks more than a thousand words. Therefore, I
have decided to publish many photographs to more fully illustrate the events
that are recounted, so that the reader gets a more complete impression.
I was bom in Skopje, where I have spent the greater part of my life as
well. Both my parents come from the famous Kopachka. I am proud of
them because they were modest, honest, and virtuous, though, above all,
they were real patriots. My father, Zlate, was a “memorialist”, i.e. “Bearer
of Partizan Monument 1941” as the organizer of the anti-fascist movement
in Kichevo and the surrounding area and one of the two delegates from
Kichevo on the First
Session of ASNOM, held in the monastery St. Prohor Pcinski, together
with Dr. Vladimir Polezhinoski. Zlate was also chosen as a member of the
II Session of AVNOJ, at which the Macedonian delegation could not arrive
because of historically known reasons. He left this world peacefully, as he
spent his life, with a ballistic bullet lodged in his body for 64 years. He was
wounded in a battle in Lopushnik with the gangs of Dzemo and Mefail.
From my earliest childhood, the memories are still fresh of the frequent
visits of the old Skopje theater that was mined in the 1963 earthquake. We
visited it so often because we lived in its nearby, in the Jewish neighborhood.
As a child, I remember the great flood that affected a large area of the center

of Skopje in 1962, and also unforgettable are my memories of the earthquake
that happened on the 26th of July, 1963 that I lived through with my entire
family. As a high school student, I was involved with athletics (short trails,
obstacles, and some crosses and relays), and I was an active member of the
choir, first in the high school “Josip Broz Tito”, then in the student choir
“Mirche Acev”, and for a while in the choir of the Macedonian Radio with
which I had the honor to perform at the grave of St. Cyril in the church of
San Clemente in Rome.
My first professional employment was in the editorial board of the news
agency Tanjug for Macedonia, based in Skopje. Agency journalism provides
an opportunity to acquire rich experiences and insights from many areas,
from politics to economics, sports, and culture, which was of great benefit
to me for my later professional engagements.
In 1991,1 accidentally entered the world of politics, where I spent more
than a decade filled with joyful as well as many bitter experiences. Twice
I was Minister: once as a member of the first democratic - the so-called
“expert” government (March 1991 - September 1992) as a Minister of
Information, and the second time in the government headed by VMRO-
DPMNE (December 1998-July 2001) as a Minister of Emigration. It will
be noted that both times I was Minister, I was the head of newly formed
ministries that after my administration were abolished, i.e. transformed first
into a government service, and later into a government agency. Whether they
were abolished because I was too bad or too good of a Minister, time will
tell. In any case, on both occasions I tried to give my all, first and foremost
in the interest of my motherland, and then to bring new, worldly experiences
in order to improve things in the areas for which I was responsible, and
for which I believe I was sufficiently experienced and qualified. However,
the changes from a traditional system that has prevailed for years into a
new system in which old clichés are abandoned, are not easy because the
resistance to the traditional view of things was enormous.
In the period between July 2001 and September 2014,1 was extraordinary
and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia to Stockholm,
Sweden as well as a non-resident ambassador to Norway, Finland, and Estonia;
a consul general in Toronto, Canada; and chief of mission of the Republic of
Macedonia to NATO, based in Brussels, with a title of Ambassador.
During the period of July 2001 and September 20141 was extraordinary
and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia to
Stockholm, Sweden and nonresident ambassador to Norway, Finland and
Estonia; Consul-General to Toronto, Canada and Chief of the Mission of
the Republic of Macedonia to NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium,
with the title ambassador.
One thing that is sharply etched deep inside me from the rich experience
I gained in journalism, politics, and diplomacy, are the characteristic features
of we Macedonians: how we experience the things that occur between us
and about us, i.e. Our worldview and its logic.
