Zusammenfassung: | Elliot L. Richardson The United States is finally awakening to the fact that it has a major stake in the future of the Arctic. Recognition of the national importance of the Arctic has been slow in coming despite the resource wealth that Arctic Alaska has thus far yielded. Although the United States has had strategic interests in the Arctic since World War II and active oil and gas interests there since the discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay in 1968, its interest in the Arctic has been low in comparison with that of its Arctic neighbors, Canada and the Soviet Union. What has been described by some as an attitude of neglect toward the Arctic is now changing. The notion of change has become central in most current discussions about the future of the Arctic. It is apparent that the Arctic region is entering a period of greatly accelerated economic, social, strategic, and is political change. The driving force behind the changes taking place resource development activity, and although the present scale of this activity is not inconsequential, it is small in comparison to its projected growth in the next two decades. In short, the Arctic is about to come alive. However, knowledge of the Arctic and experience in the Arctic is comparatively limited. Moreover, competing interests and differing val ues exist among national groups and between countries in the Arctic, just as they do in the lower latitudes |

spelling | United States Arctic Interests The 1980s and 1990s edited by William E. Westermeyer, Kurt M. Shusterich New York, NY Springer New York 1984 1 Online-Ressource (369 p) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Elliot L. Moreover, competing interests and differing val ues exist among national groups and between countries in the Arctic, just as they do in the lower latitudes Geschichte 1980- gnd rswk-swf Prognose 1984-2000 gnd rswk-swf Earth Sciences Mineralogy Ecology International Economics Mineral Resources Ecotoxicology Earth sciences Mineral resources International economics Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 gnd rswk-swf Rohstoffpolitik (DE-588)4178388-8 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaft (DE-588)4066399-1 gnd rswk-swf Natürliche Ressourcen (DE-588)4075236-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Arktis (DE-588)4002924-4 gnd rswk-swf Antarktis (DE-588)4002208-0 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift 1983 Woods Hole Mass. gnd-content USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 s Arktis (DE-588)4002924-4 g Prognose 1984-2000 z 2\p DE-604 Geschichte 1980- z 3\p DE-604 Wirtschaft (DE-588)4066399-1 s 4\p DE-604 Natürliche Ressourcen (DE-588)4075236-7 s 5\p DE-604 Rohstoffpolitik (DE-588)4178388-8 s Antarktis (DE-588)4002208-0 g 6\p DE-604 Westermeyer, William E. edt Shusterich, Kurt M. edt Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 9781461297611 https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4612-5262-7 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
