Abstract
Keywords: aesthetic conduct, judgment of value, ju-
dgment of taste, intuition, Journalism history, Petre

interwar Romanian culture, reading and interpre-
tation, antioppresive philosophy, domestic diary,
mentalities.
We keep starting from and returning to the important
role that true criticism plays in a culture. In having his task
accomplished, the genuine critic may elect to approach an ar-
tistic good in two ways. In hardly sophisticated computer-re-
lated terms, such an attempt comprises both software and
hardware (a set of programs and the data being processed,
on the one hand, and the physical side of the information
system on the other hand). Mutatis in arts, such a
division is suggestive of that between judgment of value (soft)
and judgment of taste (hard).
Most like in the information science, where the abo-
ve-mentioned dimensions imply each other, one has in hi-
gh-achieving criticism to refer the value of a textual construct
through the sieve of the aesthetic taste and of evaluating
reason.
The de gustibus et coloribus non disputandum adage
of scholastic philosophy is worth being interpreted thus in
greater depth. Physiologically, in as much as foods, colors,
and smells are concerned, this aphoristic truth keeps valid.
It accounts for the aesthetic temperament, a term employed

by A. Lalande — a relative, unstable instance, a taste in which
Voltaire himself observes “a quick perception, like that of the
tongue and the palate, and in the same manner anticipates
consideration.” (Voltaire, Philosophic Dictionary)
In the case of artistic goods, however, the tastes, as cla-
imed by Luc Ferry in Homo aestheticus, “can be discussed
(although not disputed).” Such an assertion allows for the
guiding of taste by stable, fixed criteria, while facilitating the
assured discrimination between good taste and bad taste.
All of these issues invite their examination from another
standpoint as well. The critic who has specialized in a cer-
tain field sets out reasons to whom the judgment of value,
based on axiological criteria, acts as their foundational core.
Nevertheless, the respective critic reaches the clearing of his
rational construct by starting from doxa ( , to seem; the
religious charge of the term is left aside), the layer of one’s opi-
nions and preference(Vianu) for a certain artistic work that,
in so far as artistic taste is concerned, testifies to a markedly
subjective aesthetic attitude
This is the moment that particularly the authoritative,
aesthetically-experienced critic may risk putting forward in-
tuitions that, sooner or later, will get confirmed or not by the
syllogisms of the critique of judgment faculty, as Kant would
state it. At the same time, courtesy of his aesthetic conduct,
the critic can manage to grasp or not the concept, as Noica
demanded true criticism to do. The critic who manages to
reach that peak accounts for a genuine one; otherwise, he
makes a criticaster only. In both cases, the reception effects
are rather predictable.
From a Kantian point of view, our aesthetic judgment
or hermeneutic exertion is rooted, first and foremost, in
the solid ground of the synthetic ju of taste, whose

“determining factor cannot help being but a subjective one”
(Kant, Critique of Judgment). The validity of such a recep-
tion mode will get justified by the judgment of value (en-
compassing the judgment of taste) even without having the
impositions of the spirit of the age exempted from the critical
discourse’s economy ( Saeculum).
Critique of Judgment of Taste is divided into three secti-
ons, aimed at axiologically ratifying variegated texts by means
of a series of readings and interpretations inspired by them.
The first section focuses on the history of interwar
Romanian journalism, particularly on Petre Pandrea - a
most rare, Balkan Zorba-like contributor to the respective
field. Accordingly, we take interest into what happened in
the living room of his biography, into that dimension of his
personality getting sublimated into tens and even hundre-
ds of diary pages. Suggestively, we have not avoided pitting
his (sjelective affinities against those of important interwar
Romanian writers.
One of the most referential relations of this kind was with
Nae Ionescu, rightfully called by critics the Professor, a spirit
bound to shape these people’s destiny not only during their
high-school years, but also way after. After paying fleeting
homage to the merits of Nae Ionescu as mentor and orator,
Pandrea would minimize Nae Ionescu’s influence on him and,
in the long run, would go as far as denying any apprenticeship
of the kind. Moreover, from the pedestal of an eminent ju-
rist, Petre Pandrea would render obvious — in a hardly-con-
tained arrogant terms — his law-related ascendancy over the
Professor’s respective dilettantism.
One cannot overlook the rather bookish relations between
Pandrea and Mihai Ralea, another leading intellectual of the

time - especially their uncordial polemic on various socio-po-
litical and juridical topics.
A much more detailed analysis is made of the
Switzerlandization of Romania, the work in which Pandrea
writes on everything: political philosophy, political sociology,
law philosophy, while also trying his hand at judging interwar
political mentalities and those of common Romanian people.
Most specifically, he examines at large the Oltenian, that per-
son’s stand somewhere between the Romanian simple perfect
tense and (de)compound perfect tense.
In the second section of Critique of Judgment of Taste,
our value-justifying critical excursion addresses several books
from the field of philosophy, sociology, fiction or poetry, even
communication sciences, contributed by either promising
young writers or outstanding ones at the zenith of their ca-
reer. Eminent thinker Alexandru Surdu’s
is examined in view of its daring break-off and continuity
relations with Constantin Noica’s metaphysics.
Accordingly, E. M. Cioran’s statements and ideas from a
fragmentary hand-written variant of Twilight of Thoughts,
found in the Sibiu archive of the philosopher’s brother, are
given due critical scrutiny.
The last section of the book features domestic diary
brouillons - One’s Days according to Job - that cover a tra-
gic interstitium in their author’s life and read as an attempt
at expiating the evil by genuinly comprehening the meaning
of suffering.
