□ver The Ephemerides by Heinrich Wankel
Wankels Ephemerides, a substantial part of which we issue on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of
the researcher’s death for the first time, are a typical document of its time. Wankel wrote them between his
22nd and 27th year, when he lived in Prague, studied medicine and with his friends visited various monuments
and excursion destinations. It is thus not possible to promise the reader from the Ephemerides some instruc-
tion in the fields, which made their author famous, i.e. in speleology and archaeology. Instead, one will read
to exhaustion on erotic adventures, which, despite the significant variability of the participating women and
girls, are served constantly just as passionately and painfully. Wankels amorous woe does not compare with
an envious amount of experience, whose end is however always withheld - unlike the naturalistically drawn
scenes in the private journal of Karel Hynek Macha, only a little older. The spectacular pain and eternally as
if unfilled desire certainly belonged to the Werther-esque spirit of the period Romantic literature, but with
Wankel a role could have also been played by the real loss of his first great love Marie Sturmann, called
Netti, with whom he fell in love at age 15 and five years later, in the spring of 1844, left this world. However,
at that time, the young Heinrich already had relationships behind him with another Netti, Sarka, Malchen,
Rosa, Froni, Matyida and several Maries, so the death of the first Marie was probably only material for further
painful reminiscences. In his girlfriends, the young man mainly noticed their bodily shapes, less their character
traits, of which he is often very critical, whereas he complete ignores their practical skills and the intellectual
side of the women. In 1844 through 1846, he describes these love adventures, or rather loves, in many places
and so monotonically that we have had to resort to a select and of them leave only a few - particularly those,
which concerned the detrimental milieu of the “Prague mud”, or those, who provide testimony on the students
thinking and motivations. The timeless contradiction between his utter social lifestyle and study at university
is often reflected in the memories. In the autumn of 1843 and in the following year, there appear many
entries on trips to various places of interest, but the author always soon digresses from their characteristics
to descriptions of experiences with the girls on the excursion and local ladies. However, the most important
are the passages on various social unrests (the uprising of the printers in June 1843, the assembly of the rail-
waymen with a shooting on 8 July), and on the Prague flood in March 1845. The first mention of Moravia
concerns the end of July 1847, when Wankel returned from Vienna.
The original (?) version of the Ephemerides have been preserved on pages of the extended A5 format,
bound into a 2.8-cm-thick book with a green linen and a gilded inscription Ephemeriden. On the back of the
book, the Roman numeral I shines, but only fifty pages are written, so about 2/3 of the volume remains unused.
Another part of the autograph (?) is already on free leaves of the same size, subsequently numbered with a co-
loured pencil 205 to 342. The original central part of the entries is thus lacking, only preserved in copies. It
has not been ruled out that they were to be copied from some less organized notes into the empty parts of
Volume I. It is indicated by the perfect preparation of the bound manuscript, without things crossed out or
glossed, which cannot be said of the second collection, although it appears quite neat. Then, there is the ques-
tion whether this copyist and actually first editor was Wankel himself, or someone close to him. The first

possibility is more likely, because the manuscript of both collections seems to be identical. Urbans translation
concludes with the year 1847 (i.e. with the end of the second part of the original), but V. Zapletal continues
to the next year, namely a very valuable description of Wankels experiences from the revolutionary events in
Prague. He apparently worked from the chaotic and today almost illegible current manuscript, preserved on
88 pages of three different formats of paper. Wankels grandson Prof. Karel Absolon attached this note to its
cover: These fragments seem to me to be a very valuable document; they arey if I could quickly look through them,
Wankels Ephemerides from 1848-1851, hence from the time when he came to Blansko. They also discuss the
town of Blansko and the surroundings. In them, we find many things for Wankels characteristics, mainly he
shows us here the spark, which made him stay in Blansko. These texts seemingly were not translated in full
even by Zapletal, and their typescript German transliteration does not exist. It is also a question, who
transcribed the rest, the manuscripts of his own Ephemerides written in current lettering, because both cited
translators may have mainly worked from earlier typescripts, preserved in a number of versions, the continuity
of which and their relationship to the manuscripts is difficult to reconstruct, because not even the manuscripts
themselves are uniform.
They come from Wankel and several copyists, who here and there could have left something out or
distorted it or simply not deciphered it. In any case, the Ephemerides are a valuable document, which shows
the “father of Moravian archaeology” Jindrich Wankel in a completely different light than we see him in the
usually published photographs from the end of his life (Page 142). It is a lively and colourful image of student
life of the better situated circles in Prague before the revolution in March of 1848, which contributes to the
completeness of the conception on the social situation before the outbreak of the revolutionary movement.
Drawings and Photography by Heinrich/Jindrich Wankel
An integral part of the issued work is 56 drawings by Jindrich Wankel and a series of unique photographs,
in which the founder of Moravian archaeology is captured. Jindrich Wankel was, as is known, artistically
gifted and he developed his talents in his youth in the spirit of Romanticism. Wankel had a close relationship
with fine arts also thanks to his friendship with the famous Czech painter Josef Manes (1820-1871). Both
young men were connected by patriotic enthusiasm in the rebellious 1848, which led them even to the Prague
barricades. From that time, both were linked in friendship and in Manes s old age also the relationship of pa-
tient and physician. Manes often visited Wankels family in Blansko during his trips to the chateau Cechy pod
Kosirem, where he was for a certain time related to the family of the Silva-Tarouca. Friendly conversations
were surely had even over Wankels significant archaeological finds, which besides the collection of the Na-
tional Museum became an inspirational source of Manes s production, reflected for instance in the famous
illustrations of the Manuscripts (Kralovedvorsky a Zelenohorsky). Heinrichs elder and talented brother Vilem
(1816-1873) and likely also his sister Betty (1815-1890) studied painting with Manes as well. Wankels family
monitored also Manes sad fate at the end of his life, who suffered from progressive paralysis, caused by an
infection of syphilis. Wankel invited also other painters to Blansko, who drew scenes for him both for study
needs and also as illustrations of his work. In the 1840s and 1850s, it was mainly his brother Vilem, whom he
also directly paid for this work.
However, artistic talent did not encounter only Wankels sibling, but also Wankel himself as proved by
the preserved sketchbooks and free illustrations, deposited in Wankefs scholarly estate in the Anthropos
Institute of the Moravian Museum. In the presented publication, we have selected most successful or the most
complete of the preserved drawings and aquarelles. We have been able to divide the entire collection into four
groups based on the selection of themes, many time also the precise dating, listed with some works. The Ro-
manticizing drawings, which were created at the time of the writing of the Ephemerides are included directly
in the text. This is proved by the direct dating of two sketchbooks (the first from 1842-1844, the second after
Efemeridy z mého zivota
1844) and also the selection of the themes, which directly correspond to Wankel’s visited places in the areas
of North Bohemia. Four illustrations, which Wankel composed right into the manuscript of the Ephemerides,
are also included.
In the appendix, we then publish selected drawings and aquarelles, which have not yet been able to connect
with the text of the Ephemerides, because they were made after the arrival of Jindrich Wankel in Moravia.
Wankel fell in love with the landscape of the Litovelske Pomoravi (Litovel Floodplain) for the first time already
in 1847 on a trip from Vienna. A year later, he was already fascinated by the beauties of the Moravian Karst
when he first visited his friends in Blansko, thanks to which he also received a post as a physician at the Salm
factories, where he started on 9 October 1849. The published work gradually introduced a group of six drawing
of Znojmo and its surroundings, created likely in August 1851, because it was the place and time of his
wedding to Alzbeta (listed also as Eliska) Frantiska Simova. The wedding took place at the Church of St.
Nicholas (Mikulas) and was preceded by a longer stay with the parents of the newlyweds. A group of ten dra-
wings follows connected already with the Moravian Karst and Wankel’s stay there. The drawings of the Blansko
Chateau are interesting, where the Wankel family moved after the wedding from the house in Hugova huf
(Hugos Smelting Works founded by Count Salm) in Jedovnice in 1851. We can consider two drawings from
the interior of Wankel s flat to be interesting and similarly also the view from the window of the bedroom. In
1857, the family left the three-room flat at the chateau and moved to a newly built one-storey “doctors” house
below the chateau. It has been known for a long time that Wankel s scholarly estate, first looked after by Wan-
kel s grandson Karel Absolon, contained several aquarelles from the surroundings of Jedovnice and Josefovske
udoli (Josephs Valley), which captured the state of this landscape in the middle of the 19th century. They were
reproduced that way in black-and-white as unique items already in the monograph by Karel Absolon Moravsky
kras [The Moravian Karst] in 1970. We reprint eight of the preserved aquarelles in colour in the conclusion
of the pictorial supplement.
The collection of preserved photographs also come from the scholarly estate of Jindrich Wankel, or Karel
Absolon, deposited at the Anthropos Institute of the Moravian Museum. From the very rich, photographic
archive of the wider family of Wankel and Absolon, only those were selected and modified on which Jindrich
Wankel was directly captured. The search in other archives, in which as-yet unknown photographs of Wankel
could be found, has so far been unsuccessful. We thus consider the published series of photographs at this
time to be complete. Several documents, which are directly tied to Jindfich/Heinrich Wankel, are also included
in the appendices.
