Zusammenfassung: | This book presents the first detailed history of the modern passport and why it became so important for controlling movement in the modern world. It explores the history of passport laws, the parliamentary debates about those laws, and the social responses to their implementation. The author argues that modern nation-states and the international state system have 'monopolized the 'legitimate means of movement',' rendering persons dependent on states' authority to move about - especially, though not exclusively, across international boundaries. This new edition reviews other scholarship, much of which was stimulated by the first edition, addressing the place of identification documents in contemporary life. It also updates the story of passport regulations from the publication of the first edition, which appeared just before the terrorist attacks of 9/11, to the present day |

Torpey, Graduate Center, City University of New York Second edition Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2018 1 Online-Ressource (xix, 255 Seiten) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Cambridge studies in law and society Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 25 Jul 2018) Coming and going: on the state monopolization of the legitimate "means of movement" -- "Argus of the Patrie": the passport question in the French Revolution -- Sweeping out Augeas's Stable: the nineteenth-century trend toward Freedom of Movement -- Toward the "Crustacean type of nation": the proliferation of identification -- From national to postnational? Passports and constraints on movement from the interwar to the postwar era -- "Everything changed that day": passport regulations after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 This book presents the first detailed history of the modern passport and why it became so important for controlling movement in the modern world. It also updates the story of passport regulations from the publication of the first edition, which appeared just before the terrorist attacks of 9/11, to the present day Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Passports / United States Freedom of movement / United States Passports / Europe, Western Freedom of movement / Europe, Western Freizügigkeit (DE-588)4128501-3 gnd rswk-swf Pass (DE-588)4049302-7 gnd rswk-swf Ausweis (DE-588)4191610-4 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Westeuropa (DE-588)4079215-8 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Westeuropa (DE-588)4079215-8 g Freizügigkeit (DE-588)4128501-3 s Pass (DE-588)4049302-7 s Ausweis (DE-588)4191610-4 s Geschichte z 1\p DE-604 Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s 2\p DE-604 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 9781108473903 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781108664271 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
