Fifty Years to the Lithuanian Folk Artists’ Union he Lithuanian Folk Artists’ Union goes back to і March 1966, when the Lithuanian T Folk Art Society was established, and in 1989, it received its present name (abbreviat ed to LFAU). Today, it consists of seven departments ֊ the Šiauliai, Kaunas and Panevėžys associations, the Dzūkija, Žemaitija and Telšiai branches, and the Republican Executive Board with the Vilnius branch. The sections of textile, knitting, applied carving, weaving, sculpture, graphic art, painting, ceramics, smithery, jewellery, and customs-related art unite creative people of different age and education. The majority of them have the status of art creator, and their works are marked as national heritage. The task of folk artists is developing folk art on the basis of traditional heritage. Senior folk artists encourage crea tive young people to take interest in the traditions of folk art by their own example and give them advice. The LFAU supports the activity of folk artists by promoting their work, assisting them in holding exhibitions, and encouraging the masters of the older genera tion to hand down their experience to the young. Today, there is a lot to be shown and to take pride in, and that is why there was much reason to hold an exhibition dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the LFAU at the National Museum of Lithuania. 333 folk artists from all branches of the LFAU as well as from the Utena environs took part in the anniversary exhibition. Their works were selected in regional exhibitions by a panel of experts. The selection criterion was
the artist’s individual relation to traditional folk art. In the words of the chairman of the LFAU, Jonas Rudzinskas, one of the aims in preparing the exhibition was to show how folk art is changing along with life: We don’t have to expand the exhibition arbitrarily - let it show folk art as it is today. Let the exhibition reveal how some areas are getting richer, and other artforms are deterioratingfor the lack ofdemand. In masters’ works, reflection oftraditions is still strong. The exhibition at the mu seum showing early artefacts offolk art may urge contemporary creatorsforfurtherpursuits. Works by famous folk artists of the recent years in the fields of visual, applied and cus toms-related art, selected from the collections of the LFAU, were exhibited in two rooms of the museum. Works by painter Monika Bičiūnienė, weavers Klementina Gudonytė and Monika Kriukelienė, woodcarvers Stanislovas Riauba and Juozas Lukauskas, and mask maker Karolis Gediminas Cieminis promote folk art and the name of Lithuania on the in ternational scene. Their works are a model for contemporary creators. Some of the works were borrowed from the authors’ collections. Although created earlier, they were shown at the anniversary exhibition as outstanding examples. 315
Works of fine art ֊ painting, sculpture and printmaking - occupied the largest part in the exhibition. Painting was the most popular art form, with sixty painters presenting their works. The painting Saints by Dana Baronienė from the Kaunas association was made on board continuing the early traditions of the representation of saints. Although the roots of folk painting go back to the representation of saints, there are not many mem bers of the LFAU depicting religious themes. Folk painters prefer secular plots. They have achieved technical excellency, but their work still has not lost the features that make primitive art so attractive. The majority of paintings are colourful, have a clear composi tion, planar surfaces, are most often multi-figurative, and fascinate the viewer by their creators’ fantasy and the variety of themes. They reflect folk world perception, customs and daily life. Quite many painters are from the Piliuona studio. Though some of them have only been painting for several years, they participated in the International Festival of Naïve Art and became winners of the Monika Bičiūnienė competition. Some painters are not members of creative organizations. Examples of oil painting on canvas or cardboard are predominant; several paintings were made in watercolour. In addition to these techniques, there are some works drawn in pencil or Indian ink, and some paintings on board. In these works, people are mostly represented in their customary environment. Quite many paintings are related to tra ditional festivals. The landscape genre predominates ֊ the beauty
of Lithuanian nature is conveyed through traditional village landscapes. Many lyrical emotional paintings that emerged from childhood memories foster a close link to the Homeland. Paintings with views of the sea help convey the generalized landscape of Lithuania. Some of the painters are inspired by architectural objects in cities or manors. Paintings by Vaidilutė Stankevičienė, Petras Laucius and Valerija Nagienė were cre ated with a needle and threads. Next to them, a tapestry woven by Svajūnas Udrys was exhibited. The painting Old Shroud by Rimantas Žmuidzinavičius made using an original technique was distinguished. There were some paintings on the historical theme as well. Artūras Slapšys presented a portrait of Grand Duke Gediminas, and Jonas Guiga - A Monument to King Mindaugas. Albina and Valdis Listopadskis addressed the historical theme in their stained glass Vytau tas. The theme of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is prominent in Kęstutis Virgilijus Henrikas Vaičiūnas’s painting Mir Castle from the series Castles of the Grand Duchy ofLithuania. The surrounding world is a source of interesting ideas. Many artists develop the stilllife genre with vases, fruits and flowers. The motif of a pot plant, which was widely used in traditional furniture or architectural details, becomes a plot for paintings. 316
Folk sculptures by 29 woodcarvers were also exhibited. In this art form, the traditions of god carvers are continued. Sculptures of saints show the feel for the material, and their plots follow Christian iconography. Round sculptures of individual saints and sculptural compositions prevail. The authors of the majority of them are well-known woodcarvers having a unique style who regularly take part in exhibitions - Kazimieras Striaupa, Adol fas Teresius, Vytas Jaugėla, Gintautas Akstinas. Among the masters of woodcarving, there were some women’s works as well - St Cecile by Rūta Kavaliauskienė and Virgin Mary with Child Jesus by Anelė Araminienė. A nice match to these works was St Florian by a young woodcarver Tadas Sidaravičius. Christ by Kęstutis Ašmiaga was the only example of relief carving. The wooden sculptures of saints were accompanied by The Pensive Christ carved from stone by Valdas Bandža, one of the few stone carvers of saints in Lithuania. The Lamb and St Casimir by Viktorija Bitinaitė-Stankevičienė, made from hay and grass, showed that saints with their typical attributes could be made from untraditional materials. Juozas Varnelis’s sculpture St George from white metal is an example how technological innova tions can be used without losing the uniqueness of ethnic culture. Secular sculptures supplementing religious plots reflect the attempts of folk art ists to represent the issues of the day and give them a new symbolic meaning. In the sculpture Waiting for the Grandchildren by Rimantas Zinkevičius, the author settled grandparents waiting for their
grandchildren to return home in a traditional shrine; the sculpture Gatherers of Stars by Adolfas Viluckis is captivating by its idea, composition and original construction. Similar plots relate painting and sculpture to folk graphic art and woodcarvings. Not so long ago, woodcarvings could not be found in exhibitions of folk art, as there were no carvers. The carvings in this exhibition continue the folk woodcarving tradition ֊ they are characterized by monumentality, and free areas surrounding the figure are filled with lushly growing plants and blossoms, sometimes ֊ with dashes, crosses, and stars. There are some carvings on the historical, legendary and social themes; My Dear Homeland, You Are Beautiful and Vilnius by Gediminas Spūdys should be distinguished. Papercuts with plots are similar to engravings in the nature of creative work. It has become customary to regard papercuts as a form of folk graphic art. They feature mytho logical images, the tree of life, symbols of heavenly bodies, stars and sunbursts created in thin linear drawing. The exhibition also included papercuts of applied nature - curtains decorated with patterns of symmetrical rhombi, triangles and circles, interspersed with sunbursts and birds arranged in horizontal bands. 317
In customs-related art, an important place is occupied by the symbols of calendar customs - masks, Easter eggs and straw decorations. The works of woodcarvers, decora tors of Easter eggs and makers of straw decorations are noted for artistry and impeccable craftsmanship. Easter eggs remain one of the most beautiful folk artefacts boasting amazing col ours and ornaments, which have retained their original patterns supplemented with new compositions. The works by the makers of straw decorations Inija Ambrozienė, Irena Eitminavičienė, Zita Indriūnienė and Lina Žaliauskienė had traditional triangular and pyramidal shapes, and Elena Tarolienė made a Straw Composition for the Anniversary of the Lithuanian Folk Artists’ Union. The masks at the exhibition represent characteristic types of Užgavėnės masqueraders. Applied decorative art includes a large variety of art forms and genres. Traditional materials are used - wood, flax, wool, clay, iron, amber and leather. Smithery is one of the earliest and most important crafts in Lithuania. Fifteen black smiths presented their works showing an excellent command of technological know-how, artistic taste and experience. Iron tops were created as an original and inseparable at tribute of wooden folk sculptures. In their decoration, the motifs of sunburst and circle, as well as the symbols of stars and supplementing geometrical ornaments are predomi nant. The Little Sun by Vytas Jareckas embodies the trend to connect iron with stone that is becoming distinct in smithery. Vytautas Jarutis’s paintings with sunbursts and iron tops are an
example how a metal work can be presented in a new way. Wood works were abundant and diverse. Towel holders, boxes and heads of distaffs have traditional forms and are decorated using traditional ornaments and techniques. Part of the traditional artefacts (heads of distaffs or plates) have already lost their function and have acquired a new decorative purpose, while others (boxes, baskets, towel holders) have been creatively adapted for today’s needs. Woodcarvers use traditional materials linden, poplar and oak, continue traditional and invent new forms, use traditional orna ments and compositions for decoration. Some masters dedicated their works to the 50th anniversary of the LFAU - Vaclovas Onaitis created a book symbolizing the chronicle of Lithuanian folk art, and Eugenijus Rimdžius - the sculpture Lithuanian Woman. Baskets, chairs and cupboards displayed at the exhibition showed that wickerworkers traditionally weave various household items from round and split twigs and straws. Marytė Janulienė and Rasa Aleksandravičienė wove wicker baskets; Giedrutė Ambraškienė made household utensils used in traditional villages from grass and twigs, giving them tradi tional forms. Aurelija and Vitas Kašėta wove wicker chairs and a cupboard, and Aurelija Ruželienė ֊ a basket of universal purpose. Bayerische Staatsbibliothe München
A large part of the exhibition consisted of ceramic artefacts. ?? ceramic artists par ticipated with their works that showed a creative approach to traditional forms and orna ments, and a new original style. Beside traditional and black ceramics, artefacts of leaven ceramics created using an ancient technology were also exhibited. Jugs, vases, whistles are traditionally decorated, covered with glaze of various colours, painted or carved with floral motifs and geometrical ornaments. Quite many textile works were exhibited. Textile is a branch of folk art with deep traditions, and contemporary weavers try to adapt their works to today's requirements. Bedspreads woven by the experienced weaver Dalia Bernotaitė and her students show tasteful colour combinations and adequately chosen patterns. Embroidered and cro cheted tablecloths and towels were displayed as examples of two-heddle, four-heddle, eight-heddle and braid weaves. Sashes are not only an important part of the national costume, but also the earliest works of folk textile surpassing others in their variety and archaism of ornaments. In the 21st century, the sash-weaving traditions are contin ued. Traditional techniques are used - weaving, picking, twisting, braiding and their variants. Weavers interpret ancient Lithuanian folk patterns and colour combinations each in their own way. This textile artefact today serves the ethno-cultural, artistic and household function. Palmira Damijonaitienė gave a wider meaning to a sash and adapt ed it for a contemporary interior. Examples of the traditional Aukštaitian costume
created by Alė Gegelevičienė and Nijolė Smailienė, and national costumes collected into sets by the honorary members of the Lithuanian Folk Artists’ Union Klementina Gudonytė and Monika Kriukelienė in the second half of the 20th century, were exhibited. They were supplemented by acces sories to the national costume -embroidered scarfs and hand-knitted caps. Hand-knits mittens, socks, leg warmers, scarfs and muffs worn in former times - showed a surprising harmony of patterns and colours. There were a large number of recently popular wristlets and pouches in the exhibition. The use of these accessories, which were in fashion in the late 19th and early 20th century, was discontinued around the middle of the 20th century. Wristlets decorated with beads today are worn as part of the national costume and a deco rative detail of contemporary wear. Artful handkerchiefs were also exhibited. Brass, silver and amber jewellery ֊ brooches, beads and bracelets - demonstrate that in their work, jewellers are looking for new or long forgotten forms and often try to com bine several materials in a piece of jewellery. Some folk artists continue the early traditions of toy making. Asta Milčiuvienė intro duces us to rag dolls popular in earlier times, and little horses carved by Eglūnas Židonis are reminiscent of hobbyhorses loved by children. 319 |
