The year of 1945, „year zero” for Europe (Ian Buruma), is one of the
most crucial dates in the history of the 20th century. This date, howev-
er, still evokes strong ambivalence. As Stefan Troebst emphasised, „the
memory of the end of the war and creation of the post-war order is
currently too contradictory - and partially too traumatic - to serve as
the foundations of the European culture of remembrance”.
On one hand, it was the end of World War II, the collapse of the
totalitarian regime in Germany and the decline of alliance between the
countries cooperating with the Third Reich. The Nazi crimes of geno-
cide and aggressive imperial policy of Germany were ended. However,
the years 1944/1945 denoted the beginning of Soviet domination in
Central and Eastern Europe which persisted for almost another half
a century. The very arrival of the Red Army units to some of the Cen-
tral European countries was related to traumatic experience of Soviet
atrocities and crimes, particularly intense in the eastern parts of the
German Reich, which became part of Poland after 1945. Rapes on
women, murders of civilians, accidental but also systematic plunder,
as well as deportations of civilians to forced labour in the USSR camps
became massive.
In the countries subdued to the Soviets, official cult of the year of
1945 as the moment of „liberation” was established, while on the 9th
of May, the day commemorating the end of the war, State celebrations
of the Victory Day were held - they were accurately defined by Aleida
Assmann as „the central symbolic link with the Soviet Union” of the
„Eastern bloc” countries. Therefore, positive perception of 1945 in the
Eastern bloc countries was imposed by the regime of the communists
and „democratic” parties cooperating with them. In fact, the society
in Poland and in other Baltic states perceived liberation from German
occupation rather as replacement of one enslavement with another.
Ambivalence could also be noticed in the interpretation of the 1945
date in the Western Europe, for instance in Austria or in Germany. It
was only in 1985 that Richard von Weizsacker, federal president of the

eastern, democratic part of the latter used the term „liberation” with
reference to the 8th of May 1945, being fully aware, however, that the
phrase „liberation form themselves” that befell the Germans at the end
of the war had many meanings.
After 1989 uniform interpretation of the events of 1945 was rejected
in the Central European countries - both at the level of official cul-
ture of remembrance and in the sphere of historiography. In Poland,
Hungary, in former East Germany and in other Central European
countries intense historical studies were launched, often supported by
newly created research institutions, aiming to describe precisely the
many aspects of implementation - as a result of Red Army s arrival - of
a new political and ideological order in the lands of Central and Eastern
Europe. This work refers to these reflections, being the outcome of
a conference organised in Gliwice in 2015 by the Katowice Branch of
the Institute of National Remembrance, the Museum in Gliwice and
the Silesian Freedom and Solidarity Centre in Katowice.
The papers gathered in this volume touch upon several topics. One
of them is the question of the presence of the discussed problems in
historiography and in social remembrance.
Ewa Ochman uses the example of several Polish town to pose the
question of how the memory of the Red Army’s stay in 1945 changed
in modern Polish society. She analyses the cases of several towns from
historically separate regions, having different 1945 experiences.
The ambivalence of that memory on the German example is the
subject of Jörg Echternkamp’s paper, which also concerns modern
forms of commemorating the end of the war in the context of a debate
on the Red Army’s contribution to those events.
Boris Sokolov presents a review of the current Russian historiogra-
phy in terms of a reflection on the crimes of Red Army soldiers that
they committed mainly in the eastern regions of the German Reich.
The problem of motives behind the Soviet policies, which used e.g.
deportation of civilians (though not only) as a tool, is introduced by the
paper of Piotr Madajczyk. The author attempts to a make a synthesis
of the policy of Soviet authorities in the Central and Eastern Europe in
terms of ethnic issues, perceiving it as a convenient tool for strength-
ening the influence of the Kremlin and an element of - as he puts it
- „bringing order” to that zone by the Soviets by „adjusting” the ethnic
structure of the region to the new, post-war borders.
One of the aspects of such a policy is described by Beäta Markus in
a case study of Germans from the so called Swabian Turkey in Hunga-
ry, deported in late 1944 and early 1945 for forced labour in the USSR.
The motives of bringing order to the ethnic sphere were combined

here with the element of holding German people accountable, as well
as with the willingness to use free labour force in the labour camps.
Another case of deportations perceived as political repressions is
the subject of Dariusz Rogut’s paper. It presents details of arrest and
deportation of soldiers and officers of the Red Army from the territo-
ries of former Second Polish Republic, detained in labour camps and
their further stories.
Olesia Isaiuk, on the other hand, shows the relations that formed in
the eastern part of Galicia (Western Ukraine) - which after 1945 finally
became part of the Soviet Union - between the local anti-communist
groups and the nationalistic resistance on one side and the Red Army
on the other side. The specific nature of those relations was strength-
ened by the fact that both partisans and a large number of Red Army
soldiers were Ukrainians.
Another group of papers concentrates on the problem of the Red
Army marching into Central and Eastern Europe, with the main fo-
cus on crimes that the Soviet soldiers committed against civilians in
the occupied areas - an important problem in the culture of remem-
brance and in scientific studies, which was already pointed out in Boris
Sokolov’s paper. Giennadij Bordiugov analyses the crimes of Red Army
soldiers against a broad background, comparing them - in order to es-
tablish the right context - with the crimes of Wehrmacht soldiers e.g.
in the territory of the USSR. While the German crimes were of geno-
cide nature and they were underpinned by racist intentions of extermi-
nation, the acts committed by the Red Army soldiers were embedded
to a certain degree in the instinct of revenge, and they were also the
effect of lack of discipline and savagery of the soldiers, brutalised by
the years of total war, as the author argues.
Two more papers are the case studies on Red Army arrival in two
large European cities - Gdansk (Oliwia Gatka-Olejko) and Dresden
(Thomas Widera). They present a picture of those cities, the attitude
of the Soviets towards civilians and the first months of operation of the
occupation authorities. Thomas Widera also points to the motif of the
presence of those historic episodes in today’s remembrance of the end
of WWII in Dresden.
Another three papers deal with similar research areas: Hungari-
an historians Gabor Bankuti, Janos Bednarik and Lazar Vertesi, using
church sources that are seldom referred to in that kind of studies
(mainly parish chronicles known as historia domus), describe everyday
life of people in Hungary at the time of Soviet army arrival in late 1944
and early 1945. Two more papers provide case studies concerning the
area of Buda (Janos Bednarik) and the diocese of Pecs (Lazar Vertesi).

Summary
Even though the authors use similar sources, their works are diversi-
fied in terms of historical narrative. The focus of their deliberations
is on the priests and congregations of the Catholic Church as well as
the way they were treated by the Red Army - much more gently than
expected.
The situation in Upper Silesia was totally different. This region was
part of the German Reich already before 1939. Father Andrzej Hanich
presents numerous cases of murders of clergymen, friars and nuns:
when the front line passed, thirty-nine Catholic priests died - from
dioceses and religious orders, one Evangelical parish priest, five Fran-
ciscans and over eighty nuns from various congregations. Such a large
scale of repressions on a relatively small area, compared to Hungary,
was mainly due to a much higher level of crimes against civilians that
were committed by Red Army soldiers right after they crossed the bor-
der of the German Reich from before the 1st of September 1939.
The next part of the publication focuses on consecutive stages of
constitution of the Soviet authorities in the territories occupied by the
Red Army - mainly in the east of Germany, i.e. the Soviet Occupation
Zone, jan Foitzik attempts to reconstruct the rules that were followed
by the USSR occupation authorities in Germany and the influence they
had upon the new administrative order of what later became the Ger-
man Democratic Republic. He concludes with a thesis that what ac-
tually shaped the system of power in the Soviet Occupation Zone in
Germany was chaos, immediacy, competence mess.
Bettina Greiner focuses on another aspect of everyday life in East
Germany generated by the Soviet presence: the system often special
camps of NKVD (MVD), for people treated by the Soviet authorities
as potentially dangerous. People sent to those camps - which were
closed by 1950 - were those who were repressed for political reasons,
however, denazification goals also played a certain part.
The topic of camps is also referred to in the paper of Daria Czarnec-
ka. Similarly to East Germany, in Poland Soviets also created new plac-
es of isolation by using the infrastructure of German concentration
camps. Czarnecka describes Soviet camps located in 1945 in the ter-
ritory of former Nazi German concentration camp in Auschwitz-Birk-
enau. They were used e.g. as the point of accumulation and transfer of
civilians and German prisoners of war for forced labour to the USSR.
The author also shows how these outposts were then used by the se-
curity apparatus being brought to life in communist Poland - in this
case by the Poviat Office for Public Security in Biata Krakowska.
The volume is concluded with a short reflection on historical sourc-
es. Mirosfaw Golon speaks about the significance of the files of mass

proceedings for legal presumption of death, that were carried out af-
ter 1945 in Polish municipal courts. The author shows the exceptional
meaning of those documents for the reconstruction of statistics of the
victims of Soviet repressions against Polish citizens in years 1944-1945.
Even though the studies on the presence of the Red Army and So-
viet authorities in the Central and Eastern Europe in the final phase of
the war and the first months after its end include hundreds of works
in the countries of that regions, the topic is still full of aspects that
have not been studied sufficiently, gaps and understatements, partly
due to lack of a comparative perspective. Meanwhile, a view on the
situation in a particular region, town or diocese, being aware of how
similar those events in different territories were, allows us to broaden
our field of visions, to ask new questions, sometimes to reach for new
archival sources and research tools. The purpose of this volume is also
to encourage the readers to broaden their perspectives.
