THE SERBIAN MASACRE IN THE VILLAGE OF ZAGORI-
DUMNICE IN VUSHTRRI IN 1924
Documents
Painful history of the Albanian people proves the tragic games that some
of the neighbors and European Great Powers have played behind their backs,
endangering their existence, denying them as a nation, a country, and a state. In
the past, in certain periods of time and places, unprecedented crimes have been
committed. It was a real genocide against the Albanian people. The peak of
crime and genocide occurred in the last fight of the Serbian aggressor against
the Kosovo Albanians in 1998-1999, where thousands of people, among them
children, women, elders and young ones were killed and went missing in many
massacres that occurred in the entire Kosovo.
Kosovo leaders, even the population itself opposed and even resisted in
many different ways against the violence and terror against Albanian population.
There were objections and protests by the few Albanian delegates in the
Parliament of the Kingdom of Serb-Croat-Slovenes, respectively Yugoslav
Parliament. There were protests especially after many massacres committed
against the Albanian population. One of those massacres that was slightly
brought to light was the massacre of in the village of Dumnica (Zagori) and the
village Krasniqe from Vushtrri municipality. This massacre occurred on
February 10, 1924.
The goal of this massacre, but also of other massacres of that time, was
to sow of fear in the families of Kosovo s national liberation fighters and among
Albanian majority population in order to hinder the movement of Kaqak
(guerrilla) fighter and to stimulate the displacement of Albanians from their
native land and colonization of this territory with the Slavic people. Thus, the
aim was to change the national structure of Kosovo to the detriment of the
Albanian people, respectively to the Serbization of Albanian territories.
Authorities, the garrisons of the Serbian gendarmerie stations, even the military
troops behaved fiercely against the innocent Albanian population, punishing and
revenging on them, especially in those cases when they experienced a complete
defeat in the struggle with the Ka?ak (guerrilla) fighter.
Against this massacre reacted Ferhat Bey Draga and Aqif Blyta who were
Albanian delegates in the Parliament of the Kingdom of Serb-Croat and Slovens.
Moreover, they also prepared an interpellation to report to the Parliament of the

Kingdom of S-C-S. However, the government and the parliament postponed the
discussion while strengthening their political positions, in order not to meet the
demands of the Albanian parliamentarians, which consequently would have
brought to the ending of the killings and the genocide of the Albanians in their
territory. This would run counter to the Serbian national program for the Slavism
of Albanian lands through the most barbaric genocide. Finally, after a month and
ten days, respectively on March 20, 1924, the interpellation was put on the
agenda, that was presented by Mr. Ferhat bej Draga and Aqif Blyta, delegates in
the Parliament of the Kingdom of Serb-Croat-Slovene.
The massacre against the Albanian population in the village of Dumnica
(Zagori) in the outskirts of Vushtrri, which occurred on 10 February 1924, does
not represent only the character of an ordinary massacre, in which children,
women, the elderly and innocent gendarmerie were killed and burned. We will
point out that only innocent people were killed, among them 25 children, women
and the elderly and 5 gendarmes. Because of this and because of all the
circumstances and causes of this massacre against innocent people, this
massacre goes into something terrible; it takes the character of the
unprecedented scandal. A scandal of this kind is not recorded even in those
places where there is no trace of justice, where real anarchy rules.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part includes historical data
about the massacre of 10 February 1924 in Zagori - Dumnica of Vushtrri, while
in the second part are presented archival documents regarding this massacre. The
documents are submitted in chronological order, according to the year of
creation. Some documents, especially those in Albanian, are presented in the
language of the time, in italics, with quotation marks. No interference has been
made in them. Parallel with translated and processed documents, original
documents are presented. The documents submitted are in Serbian, Albanian,
Ottoman Turkish and in French.
The documents presented about the Massacre of Zagori - Dumnica have
been researched in the Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tirana, in
the Archives of the Military Historical Institute in Belgrade, in the Macedonian
Archives in Skopje, in the State Archives of Kosovo in Pristina, the stenographic
Notes that published the debates of Ferhat Bey Draga and Aqif Blyta in the
Parliament of the Kingdom of SCS in the newspapers of that time such as:
Belgrade’s Politika , Pravda and Vreme , Skopje’s Hak ; Sarajevo’s
Pravda ; Tirana’s Drita , Belgrade’s Nepravda , Belgrade’s Samouprava”
Skopje’s Sloboda , and other newspapers.
