CONCLUSION
Developments in education, the foundation of schools
in Gjakova during the World War I (1915-1918) and World
War II (1941-1945), and campaigns of the teachers of this
city, are a part of the efforts and achievements of the patriots
and intellectuals of the Independence era. These men were the
successors of the National Renaissance activists. Gjakova
teachers not only helped with the establishment of schools in
Albania, but later they played an important role on building of
the education system in Kosova and other Albanian territories
that were unfairly divided from Albania.
Gjakova teachers is a new generation that was bom and
formed during the weakening of the Ottoman Empire when
Albanians were raising awareness about their national
ethnicity.
During that time, Albanians were denied their basic
rights and were deprived of their national status by the politics
of the foreign regimes. The National Renaissance activists
intended to open schools and develop education in Albanian
language, this led to the formation of the first and second
generation of Gjakova teachers. The Independence of Albania,
the closeness of Gjakova to the border of Albania and the
emotional bond of the families of both sides of the border
made it easier for more generations of teachers to form. This
made it difficult for the foreign regimes to influence this area
enough, which incapacitated them to open schools in their
own languages (Turkish and Serbian). Since the second half
of the twentieth century the Albanians of this area understood
and followed the message of the National Renaissance
activists that said: “Albania can not exist without
Albanians, Albanians can not exist without Albanian
language, Albanian language can not exist without
Albanian schools where Albanian Language would be
learned” (Naim Frasheri 1900).

In order to open schools in Albanian language they
needed to train young generations to teach, who later would
form the core of the education in Albanian language. There
were over twenty Gjakovar families, knowing that being well
educated was very important for the future of the country,
during the Albanian National Renaissance years (towards the
end of the third stage, 1905/1906), started sending their sons
and daughters to high schools (in Turkish) in Skopje and
Istanbul, so that they can get an education and then contribute
to their own schools when they would be founded!
This continued even after the truncated Independence
of Albania between two World Wars, when over seventy
young gjakovars managed to get their education in Albanian
language by taking the risk of crossing the border illegally
(Kosovo-Albania). Consequently the return of both groups of
graduated teachers (educated either in Turkish or Albanian
languages represents the first and most important human
resource that was a great contribution and a specific feature
for the education process in Kosova and other Albanian
territories.
Based on the research, documents and archive
presented on this study, which may be on the interest of future
readers and researchers, we come to the first conclusion:
1. Gjakova has been the education nucleus, because
in this city so many historical, educational and cultural figures
of this nation were bom and brought up. Writers, intellectuals,
historians and publicists like L. Gurakuqi, J. Erebara, A.
Hadri, J. Buxhovi, R. Abdyli, A. Vokrri, J. Rexhepagiq etc,
have agreed with this fact.
These families from Gjakova valued the national
education and youth schooling and were determined to save
its language and culture. They always ignored and refused
foreign regimes and their influence in language and culture,
therefore were a target, were prosecuted and in danger of
liquidation. In order to be protected, these families sent their
sons across the border to Albania where they finished their
school in their mothers tongue and were equipped with proper

national culture and education. These kids and young guys
bora on the last quarter of the XIX Century and first quarter of
the XX Century are the 21 teachers from the first generation
and 41 teachers from the second generation portrayed in this
book.
An interesting element is noted, specially on the
second generation; most of these teachers (29) were raised
without one or both parents, and also had spent their
childhood in dorms, and later seventeen of them faced jail and
deportation. Numerous teachers from this generation paid, for
their teaching and their national liberty activities, with their
lives (N. Ferizi, D. Taha, Gj. Martini, H. Taha, H. Zajmi, M.
Gazija, R. Treni, Xh. Hana etc.).
The cultural and educational factor, during this period,
becomes very important in the formation of the National
Awareness fundaments. The youth from Gjakova, first
generation, who studied in Skopje and Istanbul, and later the
second generation (after the independence) who studied in
Kruma, Shkoder, Tirana, Elbasan and elsewhere, continued to
teach in Albania. They helped with education and
emancipation of the population in the rural areas that were
undeveloped due to fanaticism, intolerance and religious
divisions caused by numerous invaders.
Both generations of these teachers contributed on the rebirth
of the national culture. From this point of view we come to the
second conclusion:
2. The teachers from Gjakova mission wasn t only of
cultural nature. Their work and mission was changing into a
political mission. The intertwining of these two attributes
(cultural and political), later, became a powerful weapon in
the fight for the long trampled rights of the Albanian Nation in
Yugoslavia.
The biography and work of these teachers is an exceptional
part of the history with each one of the being a chapter in it.
They did not spare their efforts, knowledge, soul or life to
fully accomplish their holistic mission in establishing the
education in Albanian language. They did not have proper

housing, clothing, they were deprived of food and family
comfort. These generations of teachers are particular and have
the same characteristic in common, about 85% of their work
experience was obtained away from home. This fact brings us
to the third conclusion:
3. The map of their work shows that the missionary
teachers of these two generations gave their contribution in
almost every part of Albania and other Albanian regions.
Even though Gjakova had and ample amount of teachers, the
schools in this city, were paradoxically lacking staff because
its teachers were implementing their mission in other parts of
the country. This leads us to the fourth conclusion:
4. The mission and dedication of the first generation
teachers (I. Fehmiu, I. Kolgi, M. Shehdula, J. Puka etc.) and
the second one (Z. Rexha, H. Taha, E. Shehdula, N. Nura, S.
Ra ?a etc.) is of a nationwide importance.
The commitment of teachers from both generations is
particularly valued by heir former students and researchers.
Their commitment to having first three generations of
graduated students from First High School of Gjakova and
High School “Sami Frasheri” of Prishtina at the end of 1950
has been crucial for Albanian Education in Kosova.
