Zusammenfassung:Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Búrca use videotapes, photo-searches and interviews to address issues such as the commodification of traditional collective practices and the folklore of pop culture in emerging economies. In the book Building Recife / Recife Edifice, they bring photos of sculptures present in buildings of the capital of Pernambuco accompanied by testimonies of the porters of the buildings about these works. Bárbara Wagner [Brasília, DF, 1980] and Benjamin de Búrca [Munich, Germany, 1975] live and work in Recife, PE. Bárbara Wagner is represented by Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel and Amparo 60. Recent individuals: Art Gallery of York University, Toronto, Canada; Aspirations, MoCAD - Detroit Museum of Contemporary Art [Detroit, USA]. Participated in the São Paulo Biennial [2016]; of the Panorama of Brazilian Art [2013 and 2017]; and Skulptur Projekte [2017, Münster, Germany].
In Recife, in the Northeast of Brazil, the idea of a city as a synthesis of the arts takes the form of a municipal law in the early 1960s, making it mandatory to install three-dimensional works of art at the entrance of large buildings. Generally positioned next to the security booths in the residential buildings, these works are observed daily and often conserved by the porters that guard the entrance of these buildings. Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca make an inventory of these sculptures present in the daily life of the capital of Pernambuco. But Edifício Recife is not a compendium of images, technical data and specialized critical descriptions. From conversations with doorkeepers, artists gather sincere testimonials, true descriptions of these objects and their relationships with the buildings, the city and the understanding of what is beautiful or ugly.
The Recife Building work, a polyptych of 22 boards containing three images each, was first presented in 2013 at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo in the framework of the 330 Panorama of Brazilian Art, P33: Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, with curated by Lisette Lagnado. In 2017, the pair participated in the 5th edition of the Skulptur Projekte in Münster, Germany, with artistic direction by Kasper König, curated by Britta Peters and Marianne Wagner. At the time, the publication was published, which has a circulation of 500 copies, 66 are accompanied by a unique signed photographic print
