Zusammenfassung: | This revisionist account of the economic, literary and social history of Florence in the immediate aftermath of the Black Death connects warfare with the plague narrative. Organised around Petrarch's 'war' against the Ubaldini clan of 1349-1350, which formed the prelude to his meeting and friendship with Boccaccio, William Caferro's work examines the institutional and economic effects of the war, alongside literary and historical patterns. Caferro pays close attention to the meaning of wages in context, including those of soldiers, thereby revising our understanding of wage data in the distant past and highlighting the consequences of a constricted workforce that resulted in the use of cooks and servants on important embassies. Drawing on rigorous archival research, this book will stimulate discussion among academics and offers a new contribution to our understanding of Renaissance Florence. It stresses the importance of short-termism and contradiction as subjects of historical inquiry |

It stresses the importance of short-termism and contradiction as subjects of historical inquiry Petrarca, Francesco / 1304-1374 / Epistolae familiares / VIII, 10 Petrarca, Francesco / 1304-1374 / Criticism and interpretation Boccaccio, Giovanni / 1313-1375 / Criticism and interpretation Petrarca, Francesco 1304-1374 (DE-588)118593234 gnd rswk-swf Boccaccio, Giovanni 1313-1375 (DE-588)11851217X gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1349-1350 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaft (DE-588)4066399-1 gnd rswk-swf Renaissance (DE-588)4049450-0 gnd rswk-swf Pest (DE-588)4045326-1 gnd rswk-swf Krieg (DE-588)4033114-3 gnd rswk-swf Florence (Italy) / Civilization / To 1421 Florence (Italy) / History, Military Renaissance / Italy / Florence Florenz (DE-588)4017581-9 gnd rswk-swf Florenz (DE-588)4017581-9 g Krieg (DE-588)4033114-3 s Pest (DE-588)4045326-1 s Wirtschaft (DE-588)4066399-1 s Geschichte 1349-1350 z DE-604 Renaissance (DE-588)4049450-0 s Petrarca, Francesco 1304-1374 (DE-588)118593234 p Boccaccio, Giovanni 1313-1375 (DE-588)11851217X p 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 9781108424011 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781108539555 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
