Direct Alcohol Fuel Cells for Portable Applications presents the fundamental
concepts, technology advances, and challenges in developing, modeling, and
deploying fuel cells and fuel cell systems for portable devices, including micro- and
mini-fuel cells.
In the first part, the authors review the fundamental science of direct alcohol fuel
cells. They cover in detail thermodynamics, electrode kinetics, and electrocatalysis
of charge-transfer reactions, mass and heat transfer phenomena, and basic modeling
aspects. Experimental techniques for characterization and diagnostics pertinent to
fuel cell research and development are described. This part s final chapter examines
other fuels in DFCs, such as ethylene glycol, glycerol, formic acid and borohydride.
