ARCHIVE MATERIALS AND PERTINENT PAPERS
The Lower Kuban River in the epoch of great migrations was a meeting-point of three ethnocultural
zones, i.e. the Cimmerian Bosporus following Late Classical traditions, the steppes inhabited by nomadic
Hunno-Bulgarian tribes, and the Northwest Caucasus with its settled Proto-Adyg and Alan population.
Interaction of these areas dominated the early medieval history of Northwest Ciscaucasia and the North-
east Pontic region as a whole. Written accounts, however, are quite fragmentary and do not give us an
integral historical picture. The formation of the Northwest Caucasian culture in the early Middle Ages
can only be studied through the archaeological record.
The Pashkovskaya 1 cemetery in the vicinity of Krasnodar remains the only substantive archaeo-
logical site of the Proto-Adyg population of the Lower Kuban area dated to the Late Classical and early
medieval period. The majority of the known sites of the 5th - 6th centuries AD are situated either on the
Caucasian Pontic coast or beyond the Kuban while the Lower Kuban area has not been properly inves-
tigated archaeologically. The cemetery was excavated by M.V. Pokrovski in 1927 and N.V. Anfimov in
1936. The most extensive fieldwork was carried out by K.F. Smirnov in 1947-1949. This publication aims
at making the results of K.F. Smirnov’s excavations available to a large audience and analyzing them tak-
ing into account the current state of archaeological study of the North Caucasus and the recent advances
in archaeological methods.
The first volume begins with a biographical paper on Konstantin Fedorovich Smirnov by M.G. Mosh-
kova. It deals with his academic activity, fieldwork, and his scholarly legacy consisting of some 120 titles
including six monographs.
The first volume contains K.F. Smirnov’s final reports on the excavations of the Pashkovskaia 1 cem-
etery (currently within the city of Krasnodar) consisting of 29 burials in 1947-1949 kept at the archives
of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a collection of pertinent artefacts
kept at the State Historical Museum (Fig. 1-135). K.F. Smirnov’s fieldwork was carried out at the high-
est methodological level for that time and the extant documents enable us to reconstruct the archaeologi-
cal context fairly adequately.
The first volume includes seven appendices. Appendix 1 is a catalogue of the collection of artefacts
from the Pashkovskaia 1 cemetery kept at the Archaeological Department of the State Historical Museum

describes 474 items being either grave goods or stray finds.
Appendix 2 is N.V. Anfimov’s report on the excavations on the Pashkovskaia 1 cemetery kept at the
archives of the Institute of of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is
the most important document minutely describing the excavations of 20 burials of the 5th - 7th centuries
AD in the western part of the necropolis (Fig. 136-182) and the main categories of grave goods, i.e. pot-
tery, weapons and ornaments.
In Appendix 3 M.M. Kazanski and A.V. Mastykova provide a joint catalogue of burials of the Pah-
kovskaia 1 cemetery taking into account N.V. Anfimov’s excavations of 1936 and K.F. Smirnov’s excava-
tions of 1947-1949. All the available data on 49 burials are gathered on the basis of archival materials and
grave goods kept at the State Historical Museum.
Appendices 4-7 are a facsimile re-edition of papers by M.V. Pokrovski, N.V. Anfimov and K.F. Smirnov
in 1947-1949 published in 1936-1951. These publications dealing with the excavations of the Pashkovs-
kaia cemetery are rarities not easily accessible to the majority of scholars.
