SUMMARY
The project originated from an effort to introduce, discuss, and evaluate infor-
mation gained from the research on the migrations triggered by the construc-
tion and expansion of military training areas on the territory of occupied Czech
lands during World War II. Migrations caused by military needs and specifical-
ly by the construction of military training areas were compared to examples of
other forced migrations that took place in Czech lands during the 20th century
and occurred not only due to directly military reasons, but also for e.g. political
or economic reasons, on various levels and in a various extent. The selected form
of specific examples allows for a better understanding of the scope of the issue,
especially the decision-making processes of state offices, the attitudes and be-
haviours of the affected inhabitants, the logistic planning and arrangement, as
well as the perspective of perception of specific individuals and their behaviour.
The publication is divided into several blocks with a different number of con-
tributions, whereas the division combines a chronological and thematic ap-
proach. In the introductory text by Vaclava Horcakova, a thorough historio-
graphic excursion monitors how during 1945-2015 the Czech (and Czechoslo-
vak) historiography pursued the causes, means, and consequences of relocations
of population during 1918-1989. An analysis of the published literature shows
that many texts concerning the topic of migrations have already originated, but
there is still a broad field for a further research, especially in terms of the less
elaborated aspects of economic and social migrations, including those that took
place within the authoritative regime after 1945. These migrations were often
forced, and they were caused by political pressure which focused on a certain
group of inhabitants.
The first block of the publication addresses topics from 1938-1945. Petr
Bednarik introduces difficult problems associated with the migration of
the Jewish population in the era of the so-called Second Republic (Octo-
ber 1938 - March 1939), especially the help of international support organiza-
tions. Jan Nemecek and Daniela Nemeckova show how forced migrations be-
came part of the German occupation policy in the Protectorate of Bohemia and
Moravia in the context of a broader effort to germanize the occupied territories.

A description of basic mechanisms of the displacement of populations is ac-
companied by their application around individual military areas. In a particu-
lar example of an ammunition factory in Holysov, Karel Rehácek illustrates the
manner of engagement of a foreign work force in the military industry. Zdenko
Marsálek views the topic of Czechoslovak foreign military resistance movement
in the era of World War II through the perspective of migration movements, and
he also touches the complicated issue of regionality of origin among soldiers.
The second block presents the content core of the publication. It pursues the
topic of forced migration of population due to the origin of military training ar-
eas, focusing mainly on the protectorate era. Military migrations have been pro-
fessionally elaborated thanks to preserved sources, interest by military histori-
ographers, and the initiative of amateur researchers. The presentation of par-
tial results in the form of six thematic contributions makes a compact material
for a potential comparison as well as a basis for a further comparative research.
The introductory contribution by Pavel Minarik presents a summary of the is-
sue of building military training areas on the territory of Czechoslovakia in the
long period from 1918 until 1990. Further contributions already pursue indi-
vidual specific areas during the occupation. Josef Velfl focused on the military
training area Brdy, Tomás Zouzal describes the mechanism of displacement of
inhabitants in the military area SS-Truppenübungsplatz Böhmen. Jiff Jelinek de-
scribes the circumstances of the origin of one of the last training areas that orig-
inated in the protectorate, the SS exercising ground Strizov near Jihlava. The
contribution of Michaela Zemánková shows how the protectorate gendarmerie
participated in the displacement of Czech inhabitants. Michal Reznicek offers
a condensed overview of the development of one of the most famous exercising
grounds, Milovice, during the first half of the 20th century.
The third block, devoted to migrations during 1945-1960, points out the
depth and scope of this issue which has not been adequately elaborated, and
a due attention will have to be paid to it in the future. Selected problems con-
tained in individual contributions are an example of the diversity of migra-
tions mainly in the post-war years. Migrations labelled in literature and sourc-
es as social could have led to the fulfilment of other goals, they could have been
a political tool for a domination, displacement, as well as liquidation of certain
groups of inhabitants. Helena Nosková introduces the issue of migrations in
the monitored period of fifteen post-war years, and in her contribution she also

evaluates the possibilities of research in the central as well as regional archives.
In an example of the so-called foresting project, David Kovarik presents life in
the region of the Czechoslovak state border during the first years after the end
of World War II, and he indicates difficult problems of the mutual coordination
of procedure of individual state authorities which pursued different ideological,
social, economic and other interests and, therefore, had different conceptions
and goals. Jifi Topinka addresses the migration of the work force in the heavy
industry during 1945-1953 in the context of the change of political situation in
Czechoslovakia during that time. Lenka Svobodova touches the issue of perse-
cution of churches in the 1950’s through a description of the forced liquidation
of women’s monasterial communities.
The fourth block focuses on a yet not very explored topic of migrations con-
ducted for purely economic reasons, using a specific example of migrations asso-
ciated with the building of hydro-engineering structures. The building of dams
was regularly accompanied by the necessity to flood entire municipalities and
relocate their inhabitants. Emil Kordiovsky describes the situation during the
building of hydro-engineering structures in south Moravia, and he compares
the attitude of state authorities during the 1930’s and 1960’s. An international
team of authors (Robert Stojanov, Ilan Kelman, Yan Tan, and Barbora Duzi) in
its contribution compares the results of research on the impact of the building
of the colossal hydro-engineering structure Three Gorges Dam in China with
the example of the migration of inhabitants during the building of the relative-
ly small dam Slezska Harta in then Czechoslovakia. The comparison of these
two examples, that differ in their environment, time, as well as the incompa-
rable size of these two hydro-engineering structures and, therefore, also in the
scope of impact on the population, provides interesting information on vari-
ous aspects of forced migrations in the environment of an authoritarian state.
The last block depicts the issue of migrations through the perspective of par-
ticular (minority) nationalities. Stanislav Broucek examines the circumstanc-
es of the forced work migration from Vietnam to Czechoslovakia. Andrej Sulit-
ka introduces migrations of Czechs and Ruthenians from Carpathian Ruthenia
mainly after 1989 also in connection with the official restoration of the Ruthe-
nian nationality in Czechoslovakia. Both authors conclude their contributions
with an overlap into the present situation of these particular national minori-
ties in the Czech Republic.

In the final text, Zlatica Zudova-Leskova discusses the entire subject matter of
migrations and reflects general phenomena concerning migrations as a certain
form of mobility, which has accompanied humankind from its outset, where it
has had a various character, forms, goals, and scope.
