SUMMARY
The first part of the monograph „Regional and Political Geography of
the Balkan Countries“ (published in 2011) dealt with the formation of the
contemporary political map of the Balkan region, the specifics and peculiarities
of the political and cultural-civilization space of the Balkan states as well as the
conflicting geopolitical zones in the Balkans. Natural resources and their socio-
economic development have also been explored and analyzed. The expanded
geographic scope (including countries to a considerable extent outside the
Balkan Peninsula) has allowed us to cover and analyze more properly from a
scientific and practical point of view the complex socio-cultural and geopolitical
processes of contemporary Balkan cultural and civilization space.
The individual Balkan states as part of a georegion are revealed through a
complex geographical analysis, which is based on an algorithm that includes
the Geographic space (location and political boundaries, the geopolitical
code, the peculiarities of the territory - compactness, degree of neighborhood);
the natural resource potential; the spatial development and the formation of the
state territory, the political system and the administrative-territorial structure;
Society (ethno genesis, demographic situation, demographic policy, spatial
segregation); Economy (sectoral and territorial structure, geo-economic
code, primary, secondary and tertiary sectors, national environmental policy);
Regions. The considerable scope of the tasks is the reason why only a few of
the Balkan countries are concerned in the second part of the book. The rest
will be the subject of a separate study, essentially a third part of the monograph
„Regional and Political Geography of the Balkan Countries“. The specific
assessment of individual Balkan countries is made in accordance with the
specifics and peculiarities of contemporary cultural, political and socio-
economic geographical space. Balkan states are featured by different geospatial
coverage and specific natural, historical, socio-economic, and cultural-political
characteristics. The Balkan region - these are people, social life, and regional
socium with its cultural and civilization peculiarities. Therefore, the dominant
approach, as in the first part of the monograph, is the civilizational approach,
which is understood as a complex and systemic category. The spatial scope of
the Balkan countries is defined through the prism and the aggregate influence

of various political-geographic and cultural-historical factors. That is why the
Balkan countries represent a particular geographical blend uniting nations and
countries with different socio-economic and cultural-political parameters. It
should also be borne in mind that the world is constantly volatile and dynamic.
Certainly, we have to relate this to the global geopolitical and geo-economic
system. It is important to analyze how it affects the territorial-political system
of the Balkan countries. The complex system of spatial relations that arises in
the Balkans is determined by the different geopolitical weight of its individual
parts. While appreciating the modem role of the Balkans in the system of
international relations, we cannot fail to point out that the region’s conflicts
generating potential has not risen, but has not gone completely, too. To a great
extent, it depends on the global geopolitical order, on the cultural-civilization
specificity and especially on the Balkan interstate relations. The complicated
geopolitical games concerning the Balkan countries have made them face the
challenge of preserving their national identities (understood in a different way
by different states), by defining their enemies, friends, victories and defeats. For
some, survival is an eternal struggle, according to others it is rather an eternal
adaptation. Because of this (and regardless of the steps in a positive direction),
the Balkan countries have certain prejudices to each other, as well as mutual
claims usually associated with the distant past. If the Balkan countries still
have unresolved conflict zones, this is due to the fact that the self-identification
process has not been completed. We do agree with Max Weber, who notes that
the nation, nationality, ethnicity are generally understood in interaction with
other nations and countries, or they identify themselves as they enter the system
of international relations. Therefore, it will not be wrong to consider that the
emergence of national states takes place through ethnic homogenization. On the
other hand, one should not forget that the ethnically homogenous state seriously
hinders the process of democratization. A special place in the monograph is
dedicated to Macedonia, which is a specific geo-spatial area characterized
by a number of political, spatial and cultural-historical features. The Balkan
region has every opportunity to overcome the notorious „balkanization“ and
gradually become an integral part of the European continent, moreover, that the
European Union has taken responsibility for the stabilization of the region. To
achieve this, the individual Balkan states need to take a number of compromise
decisions, regulate their inter-ethnic problems and perceive the tolerance of
the peoples of Europe.
The present monograph is in line with the Geography curriculum at Sofia

University „Ohridski“, namely the discipline „Regional Geography of the
Balkan Countries“. It can also be used by the students in Political Studies and
European Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy, by the students in International
Relations at the Faculty of Law, as well as the students at the Faculty of
History. It is also aimed at a wide range of readers interested in the complex
political-geographic problems and peculiarities of the countries of the Balkan
region, and at the Bulgarian political and economic elite - politicians, lawyers,
economists and businessmen.
