HISTORY OF THE CHUVASH PEOPLE:
AN ANALYSIS OF MAJOR VERSIONS

Bolgars, Turks, Mongols, Tatars, Huns, Ugric, ethnonym, history, geogra-
phy, genogeography, anthropology, archaeology, religion, language, art,
ethnography, folklore.
This work has provided an analysis of the main versions of the or-
igin and formation of the Chuvash people. The tribes examined in the
book are all interconnected in some way, but each of them has taken
its own historical path (see the conclusions for each chapter). We have
based our conclusions on reliable sources, critically analyzing the most
important literature to establish the correctness of each of the available
versions.
As the primary sources show, the Savir hypothesis as to the origin of
the Chuvash is closest to the truth. More precisely, the Savars/Savirs/
Suvars made up the core of the ancestors to the Chuvash. The remain-
ing versions (Bulgar, Turko-Mongol, Hunnic, Ugor, and Persian) have
been presented in chapters arranged by diminishing consistency with
regard to the Chuvash. Nevertheless, the present-day Chuvash cannot
be described as the “pure” descendants of the Savirs. The genetic, an-
thropological and linguistic data, as well as the rituals, beliefs and other
ethnographic features have, to various extents, absorbed aspects of the
tribe’s historical neighbors through historical interaction.
The history of the ancestors to the Chuvash can be divided into sev-
eral spatial and temporal areas: 1) the North Caucasus (2nd century —
737 CE), 2) Saltovo-Mayaki culture (737-895 CE), 3) the left bank of
the Middle Volga (895-922 CE), 4) the right bank of the Middle Volga
(922 CE — present).
The facts suggest that the Savars — Sapirs — Savin — Sabirs — Su-
vars made the correct strategic decisions. The Suvars who retreatd to
the right bank of the Volga in 922 formed the core of the ancestors to
the present-day Chuvash, a core which over its long history managed to

preserve its age-old traditions and avoid being absorbed by the Islamic
culture. The path the ancestors to the Chuvash travelled can be seen as
a search for their own personal identity.
Even setting aside any assumptions regarding the events before the
Common Era, we still have the evidence from the early centuries CE:
the testimony of Ptolemy (2ral century), Aelius Herodianus (3rd centu-
ry), Ammianus Marcellinus (4th century), Priscus of Panium, Procopi-
us Caesariensis and Stephanus of Byzantium (5th century). At the time,
there were no Turkic peoples in the Caucasus, as they only entered the
region in the 6th century.
By drawing upon conclusions from allied disciplines, this book has
systematized the relevant data and demonstrated it. It has analyzed pri-
mary sources and secondary literature on the subject. The author has
analyzed the hypotheses, versions of the story, and other factors which
have been or are related to the subject of discussion. The objective was
to extract forgotten data from the cells of history and, wherever possi-
ble, lay them out in sequential order, so that the reader may draw his/
her own conclusions. It was found that the majority of works on the
subject have been written according to the available mold.
