Zusammenfassung: | Contrary to popular belief, the roots of American country music do not lie solely on southern farms or in mountain hollows. Rather, much of this music recorded before World War II emerged from the bustling cities and towns of the Piedmont South. No group contributed more to the commercialization of early country music than southern factory workers. This book explores the origins and development of this music in the Piedmont's mill villages. It offers vivid portraits of a colorful cast of Piedmont millhand musicians, including Fiddlin' John Carson, Charlie Poole, Dave McCarn, and the Dixon Brothers, and considers the impact that urban living, industrial work, and mass culture had on their lives and music. Drawing on a broad range of sources, including rare 78-rpm recordings and unpublished interviews, the author reveals how the country music recorded between 1922 and 1942 was just as modern as the jazz music of the same era. The book celebrates the Piedmont millhand fiddlers, guitarists, and banjo pickers who combined the collective memories of the rural countryside with the upheavals of urban-industrial life to create a distinctive American music that spoke to the changing realities of the twentieth-century South |

The book celebrates the Piedmont millhand fiddlers, guitarists, and banjo pickers who combined the collective memories of the rural countryside with the upheavals of urban-industrial life to create a distinctive American music that spoke to the changing realities of the twentieth-century South Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1920-1945 gnd rswk-swf Countrymusic (DE-588)4138030-7 gnd rswk-swf Textilarbeiter (DE-588)4184946-2 gnd rswk-swf Piedmont Plateau (DE-588)4243079-3 gnd rswk-swf USA Südstaaten (DE-588)4078674-2 gnd rswk-swf Piedmont, NC (DE-588)4336944-3 gnd rswk-swf Country music / Piedmont (U.S. : Region) / History and criticism Country music / Southern States / History and criticism Country musicians / Piedmont (U.S. : Region) Textile workers / Piedmont (U.S. : Region) MUSIC / Genres & Styles / Choral Country music Country musicians Textile workers Southern States United States / Piedmont Region Electronic books Criticism, interpretation, etc Piedmont Plateau (DE-588)4243079-3 g Countrymusic (DE-588)4138030-7 s Geschichte z DE-604 Piedmont, NC (DE-588)4336944-3 g Textilarbeiter (DE-588)4184946-2 s Geschichte 1920-1945 z 1\p DE-604 USA Südstaaten (DE-588)4078674-2 g 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-0-8078-3225-7 https://doi.org/10.5149/9780807886786_huber Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext Discography 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
