Zusammenfassung: | In The Invention of Race in the European Middle Ages, Geraldine Heng questions the common assumption that the concepts of race and racisms only began in the modern era. Examining Europe's encounters with Jews, Muslims, Africans, Native Americans, Mongols, and the Romani ('Gypsies'), from the 12th through 15th centuries, she shows how racial thinking, racial law, racial practices, and racial phenomena existed in medieval Europe before a recognizable vocabulary of race emerged in the West. Analysing sources in a variety of media, including stories, maps, statuary, illustrations, architectural features, history, saints' lives, religious commentary, laws, political and social institutions, and literature, she argues that religion - so much in play again today - enabled the positing of fundamental differences among humans that created strategic essentialisms to mark off human groups and populations for racialized treatment. Her ground-breaking study also shows how race figured in the emergence of homo europaeus and the identity of Western Europe in this time |

spelling | Heng, Geraldine 1953- Verfasser (DE-588)1175406813 aut The invention of race in the European Middle Ages Geraldine Heng Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2018 1 Online-Ressource (xiii, 493 Seiten) Illustrationen txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier In The Invention of Race in the European Middle Ages, Geraldine Heng questions the common assumption that the concepts of race and racisms only began in the modern era. Her ground-breaking study also shows how race figured in the emergence of homo europaeus and the identity of Western Europe in this time Geschichte 1200-1500 gnd rswk-swf Racism / Europe / History / To 1500 Intercultural communication / Europe / History / To 1500 Cultural pluralism / Europe / History / To 1500 Rassentheorie (DE-588)4152838-4 gnd rswk-swf Antisemitismus (DE-588)4002333-3 gnd rswk-swf Rasse (DE-588)4048440-3 gnd rswk-swf Rassismus (DE-588)4076527-1 gnd rswk-swf Diskriminierung (DE-588)4012472-1 gnd rswk-swf Ethnische Identität (DE-588)4153096-2 gnd rswk-swf Nationale Minderheit (DE-588)4039409-8 gnd rswk-swf Europe / Ethnic relations / History / To 1500 Europe / Race relations / History / To 1500 Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 gnd rswk-swf Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 g Ethnische Identität (DE-588)4153096-2 s Rasse (DE-588)4048440-3 s Rassismus (DE-588)4076527-1 s Antisemitismus (DE-588)4002333-3 s Diskriminierung (DE-588)4012472-1 s Rassentheorie (DE-588)4152838-4 s Nationale Minderheit (DE-588)4039409-8 s Geschichte 1200-1500 z DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-1-108-42278-9 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-1-108-43509-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781108381710 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
