Conclusion
The territory of the municipality of Istog lies in the northwestern part of
Kosovo, in the ethnographic area of the eastern Dukagjini flat, respectively in
the ethnographical subarea of Duagjini. The good climate, the hydrographic
abundance, the good natural conditions for agriculture, farming, hunting and
fishing were basic for the rise of civilizations ever since the Paleolithic times.
However, both the Paleolithic and Mesolithic times, which preceded the
Neolithic Age in terms of today’s archaeological diggings in the municipali-
ty of Istog but also in the whole of Kosovo, remain unknown. The finding of
the Vrella and Shushica cave, both potential settlements, do not exclude the
chance that these caves were inhabited in the Paleolithic and Mesolithic eras.
Such a theory would be explained after archaeological digging.
Our research in the municipality of Istog have brought to attention exactly
116 archaeological locations, 24 of which are of prehistoric times, 44 of an-
tiquity times and 48 of medieval times.
Neolith (7000-3500 BC). This period is proven by the diggings in Rakosh,
from the findings of ceramic in upper Dragolec, from the finding of two
stone crushers in the settlements in Vrella and from the finding of a stone
axe in Uqe.
The archaeological findings in the settlements in Rakosh, seemingly mirror
the whole Neolithic Age, the Early Neolithic Age, Middle Neolithic Age -
the Kosovo variant of the Straqeva culture1 and the Late Neolithic Age - the
Kosovar variant of the Vinca culture.1 2
Eneolithic (3500 - 2600 BC).This era is represented in the settlement of
“Kershi i Vogel” in Shushica and from the finding of a stone axe in Zallq. The
settlement in Shushica lay on a small hill with natural protection and good
strategic positioning. The atypical ceramic found there does not help find an
exact chronological time of the building of said settlement.

The Bronze Age (2600 - 1100 BC). This era is represented in different
settlements and graveyards. The most important settlement for this era
in the current searches is the castle of Lubozhda, which represents the
Bronze Age up to the third phase of the Iron Age and the late Antiquity.
The castle used to lay atop a hill with good strategic positioning. In the
prehistoric Illyrian Iron Age, the castle was fortified with stone.
Some graveyards of said era were found in Baice and Lubozhde. While
the tumulus in Banja e PejSs belongs to the early stages of the Bronze
Age, in the Lubozhda tumuli you can follow the whole Bronze Age up to
the third phase of the Iron Age.
The Baica tumulus and the central grave of the Lubozhda tumulus were
comprised of only one central tomb with no inventory, where the corpses
were put under the tumulus subsoil, laid on their backs with their legs
curled up, supposedly tied, and sidelined on the right side due to the
weight of the land. This burial ritual is seen all over the Illyrian peninsula,
and is one of the first times the tumulus was used, not only in the munic-
ipality of Istog, but throughout the whole of Kosovo.
The carvings on the Cerkolez caves belong to the Proto-Dardans of the
Bronze Age or the Dardans of the Iron Age. In the second millennial or
the beginning of the first millennial the caves were turned into temples of
the Sun, whereas in the antiquity era, one of the caves becomes a grave-
yard of the columbaria sort for the first Christians, who were persecuted.
The Iron Age (1100 - 4th century BC). Represented by important find-
ings of settlements and graveyards. One of the most special findings is
the famous bronze axe with an Albanian-Dalmatian design from Sine and
the bronze necklace from Istog.
The settlements of said era were built on geostrategic hills and forti-
fied with stones. These castles which were built in the Bronze Age are
known as Gardina or Quke. The Iron Age will have most likely been
lived through by the castles of Lubozhda, Sine and that of Cerkolez.

The finding of the royal hill graveyards filled with weapons and rich silver
decorations in the 6th to 5th century BC in Banja e Pejes and Lubozhda,
as well as the findings in Kovrage, Syrigane and Istog, prove the differen-
tiation of an aristocratic group of Dardans, which has lead the forming of
the Dardanian state in the 4th century BC. The Istog tumuli were also hill
graveyards.
The time of the Dardan Kingdom (4th to 1st century BC). Was represented
in Banja e Pejes. It is known because of a Dardan aristocratic grave of the
3rd-2nd century BC which was full of post mortem riches.
The Antiquity (1st to 5th century AD). A big number of archaeological
locations of the municipality of Istog belong to the antiquity era. It is repre-
sented by settlements, Paleo-Christian churches and other casual findings.
The early antiquity era was mostly comprised of open settlements which
were built around roads such as the one that connected Mitrovica to Peja.
A road which was used even in medieval times, named “Drumi i Pejes.”
Some Paleo-Christian churches were found in Cerce, Belice and smaller
Istog, whereas the antiquity monastery of medieval times was found in
Studenica, also the martyrium of Baica and the bigger part of the Vrella
basilica.
In the late antiquity of the 4th to 6th century AD, on top of tall hills some
castles were built, such as the castle of Vrella, Cerca and Sinea. The pre-
historic castle of Lubozhda was renewed. These castles were surrounded
by walls of stone and used the opus incertum fortification system to protect
themselves from the ongoing barbarian attacks, since the Illyrian peninsula
was flooded with barbarians at the time.
The Medieval Age. (7th to 18th century AD). The archaeological loca-
tions of the medieval times are comprised of settlements, churches and
graveyards. The medieval settlements were built in fields. An exception
would be the people of Vrella where life had begun in the Neolithic Age,
and continued to the late stages of medieval times, as well as the medieval
monastery of Mojstir which was also built on a mountain side.

Almost all of the settlements in the municipality of Istog have been proven
to have had a lot of medieval churches and graveyards, which stood before
the ottoman conquering until the 17th century. The traces of the church-
es have been given Albanian names such as “Kishe», “Arat e Kishes,”
“Livadhi i Kishes,” “Lisi i Kishes,” “Kisha e Qeliave” etc. It is intriguing
to see the naming of some of these churches and graveyards as Roman
churches and graveyards from the Serbs, meaning that they believed those
to be roman as in churches and graveyards with great Catholic influence,
an influence which will always be associated with the Albanian population.
The late antiquity era churches and those of medieval times were aban-
doned around the 18th century from the Albanians when a big number of
the population converted to Islam. Those churches were used later by the
Serbian colonizers who came to Kosovo after World War 2.
