THE PARABLES IN CL
Few New Testament topics have been discussed as often and as intensely as CLthe
hypothesized second major source—alongside the gospel of Mark—for both the
gospels of Matthew and Luke, and the parables. Dieter T. Roth fills a notable gap in
New Testament scholarship, presenting the first comprehensive study of the parables
in Qand addressing the need to apply new and refined methodological and
interpretive approaches.
Roth considers Qjiot as a text behind the gospels that needs to be reconstructed,
but instead as an intertext between Matthew and Luke. Theorizing that CLoffered
plots, characters, and images in parables that were adopted and utilized in the
subsequent gospels, Roth also draws on the latest developments in parables research,
examining the 27 examples in CL(two spoken by John the Baptist, one by the
Centurion, and 24 by Jesus) in order to consider their purpose and function in this
early Christian text Covering “master/slave,” “son of man,” “sapiential,” “discipleship,”
“kingdom of God,” and “community” parables, Roth’s study is critical for those
interested in intertextuality and the Qjiypothesis.
