Composers in Bydgoszcz — towards creative environment SUMMARY The art of creating music as an unexamined and at the same time com pelling phenomenon provokes continual research connected both with an author and a piece of music. The approach to this problem including issues concerned with psychological, sociological and historical pro cesses not only enables the analysis of styles and creative periods, but also facilitates taking into account different circumstances which indi rectly and directly decide about the artistic achievements in the field of composition. While studying music culture of Bydgoszcz and of Pomerania and Cuiavia I noticed that the researchers did not attach much interest to the problem of music activities and the authors themselves. The studies published so far seem not to emphasize the core of the phenomenon of the place sufficiently, which kept changing due to some reasons into the area of activity of different artistic personalities, being expressed through particular kinds or music genres. After all, this composers’ art itself constituting an individual “crown” of the music culture, developing in particular conditions, concurrently stimulates many areas of culture. The above mentioned premises inspired and became a starting point to venture into this study, which refers to three fundamental objectives. The first one is to debunk a commonly recognized decades ago myth that Bydgoszcz, having its sophisticated history, was the city deprived of music culture, especially composers’ art (is there anybody who knows any composer of 19th or the beginning
of 20th century from Bydgoszcz?). Therefore the most important task was to cover all the sources which present composers and report their activity in different periods of city life.
530 SUMMARY The other problem of the study is to prepare or introduce (on the basis of the existing studies) a synthetic characteristics of the artistic activities of particular composers, defining kind and genre dominants and recognizing the role and meaning of creative activity of particular musicians. The third objective, and the most important one, is to sketch multian nual and multithreaded process of development of composers’ environ ment, which is, in my opinion, now being developed on the foundations of many generations of composers in Bydgoszcz. Thus the work presents the composers, whose music activity is some how connected with Bydgoszcz, within a wide chronological perspec tive from 17th century till contemporary times. The composers appearing in the city have been introduced against circumstances in the area of music culture, extended in relation to times , having no appropriate studies on it, which is above all not widely described phenomena of music culture of 19th century and problems of music culture after 1945. There are both musicians for whom composing was one of the trends of their activity ֊ teachers, choirmasters, cantors and organists, as well as ‘professional ‘ composers, who considered composition their main activity, leaving their pieces of music of not only cultural but essentially also artistic qualities. Moreover, in this study there are musicians and music enthusiasts of composer’s ambitions, often appreciated in differ ent social groups, composing pieces of music which do not exceed local reception, but from the point of view of
utilitarian, social and universal cultural merits, they are worth appreciating. Many names and pieces of music which do not exist in the subject literature and especially in the reception of music art, have been noted here . The greater part of the work, involving the second chapter and partially the third one, is the first attempt to extract from the source materials and studies the composers working in Bydgoszcz in 18th, 19th and the beginning of 20th centuries. All the names of composers from Bydgoszcz which appear in this part have been introduced for the first time in the context of traced, found and indicated evidence of their music work, or indirect sources, suggesting their composers activity (documented in source footnotes and iconographie materials). Out of
SUMMARY 531 a general number of over eighty musicians, whose composers activity is concerned with Bydgoszcz, thirty of them appeared here for the first time as authors, and another several dozen gained the status of com posers, independent from previously documented artistic or pedagogi cal activity. Besides, in the book there appeared titles, music notes and circumstances of certain performances, whose origin and reception are connected with music culture of the city. Very often, (especially in the case of works composed before 1970) these are the compositions which have not been existing in performing practice, compositions not noted in the output of particular musicians or the compositions merely men tioned in the studies of different kinds, many other works, maintained as manuscripts, have been brought into daylight for the first time. Joining the perspectives: historiographic, analytical and interpre tative, supported by psychological aspects of artistic work of Edward Nęcka and the transgressive idea of creative personalities of Józef Kozielecki, this study is meant to concentrate to a great extent on the description, factography and presentation of the material. I think how ever that it also indicates the moments where the artistic work leaving the boundaries of background music, was becoming fully independent art of meaningful artistic qualities. It also emphasizes a great meaning of sociological and cultural phenomenon of the place, which through fostering the use of cultural property has become and hopefully will keep transforming into the inspiring area for
