Michal Wawrzonek
The Myth of the Great Patriotic War and its Significance
in the Concept of “Russkiy Mir”
The aim of the article is to present the significance of Great Patriotic War myth
in the concept of “russkiy mir”. The latter plays a crucial role in an attempt
to legitimize the reintegration of the post-soviet space under Russian (Mos-
cow’s) hegemony. “Russkiy mir” is considered to be a civilization based on
the unique historical, cultural, social and political “commonwealth” Its core
would cover three Slavic countries: Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. According to
the adherents of mentioned concept identity of their societies is founded on
the orthodoxy. For that reason “russkiy mir” is also called an “orthodox civi-
lization”. In that case term “orthodoxy” should be understood in wide context
- not only as a concrete religious denomination but also as a type of cultural
and historical legacy which determines (or should determine) the rules of so-
cial and political life. The idea of the “orthodox civilization” as a natural con-
tinuation of the Soviet Union period seems to be very surprising. One of the
core institutions of “russkiy mir” appears to be the Russian Orthodox Church.
However during the Soviet times it was almost destroyed by the Bolsheviks
regime. Thousands of clergy and orthodox people were persecuted and killed
because of the Soviet policy aimed at building of a new atheistic society. The
myth of The Great Patriotic War makes a possible to unify two contradictions:
soviet and orthodox legacy. According to this myth in his actual form the
WW2 was the struggle between godless Nazi invaders and peaceful “russkiy”
- i.e. Christian people. Adherents of the concept of “ruskiy mir” emphasize
that after the first defeats the Soviet authorities realized that the people didn’t
want to sacrifice themselves in the name of the communist ideology and that
the orthodox religion appeared to be the only means of mobilizing them in
the fight as. It’s the people who according to that myth achieved Great Vic-
tory in 1945.

Summary
The concept of “russkiy mir” is transforming into some kind of politi-
cal gnosis on the basis of this myth. Its conceptual structure has very notice-
able elements of totalitarian mindset.
Marek Przybylski
Sacralisation of the Polish-Soviet War in
the Second Polish Republic
According to many members of the Polish catholic clergy, communism and
the then being established Soviet state was, directly after World War I, the
main threat to religion. This can be particularly seen in the period of the
Polish-Soviet War when the re-established (or resurrected - as some of the
clergy claimed) Polish state was at war with Russia - a fight on which its
further existence depended. Therefore, fighting a foe presenting anti-reli-
gious attitude was an obligation which each Pole who believed in God had
to keep. In order to obtain support from the Lord of the Heavens, priests
performed a number of sacral rituals. The war, therefore, was a trial by or-
deal. It was believed that a soldier—acting as a voluntary sacrifice and an
instrument of God—contributed to the existence of an independent Re-
public of Poland. The priests took the opinion that it was His power that
resulted in the victorious Battle of Warsaw, which is referred to as the “Mir-
acle at the Vistula”. An analysis of the manner in which the war has been sa-
cralised shows the use of many myths created in the period of the Republic
of Nobles.

The scar of war and its cultural reflection in the works
of Bulat Okudzhava and Vladimir Vysotsky
War affects many aspects of social life. Literature and art is not indifferent
about the war. Theme of the war had a strong influence on Russian literature
after 1945, and was also reflected in the authors song. The war in the works of
B. Okudzhava connects with negation. This poet strongly manifests its paci-
fists approach, speaking in defence of the soldiers, who gave their lives in the
battle. The situation is different in V. Vysotsky’s works, who thinks, that the
participation in the defensive war is a virtue.

Traces of war, emptiness, and allusions in literary
images of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland
In this study I analyze literary visions of post-war reality in Polish-Ukrainian
borderland. I focus on essays of Yuri Andrukhovych as well as Tango of Death
by Yuri Vynnychuk, covering in particular the remnants of cultures that are
by now hardly represented in this region, including that of the Jews.

Cossack wars in in Polish popular literature ilustrated
with ex example of Wilkozacy by Rafal D^bski and
Bohun by Jacek Komuda
The theme of the paper is image of the Cossack wars and battles with the Cos-
sacks in the Polish popular literature. I discussed two novels: Wilkozacy. Wil-
cze prawo by Rafal D^bski and „historical thriller” by Jacek Komuda Bohun.
The subject of the Cossack uprisings and wars are common motifs of Polish
literature referred to as „historical-fantastic.” Discussed authors are using ste-
reotypes and perceptions of Cossacks and Ukraine, which functioned in Pol-
ish literature from the Romantic era.

The Pacifistic Spirit over Dzikie pola.
On the Lost Movie of Jozef Lejtes
An attempt to consider, on the basis of literary and iconographic research, the
historical, political references and film contexts of the Dzikie pola (1932) by
Jozef Lejtes (the copies were lost during the second world war). The topic of
the movie is trauma and demoralization of the individual caused by the ex-
perience of war. The movie can be seen as the example of pacifist tendencies.
One of the main motives is the problem of war rapes, which was captured by
the producers in the pioneer manner.

Forgotten card in the history of the travel prose of Peter
Shalikov. The snippets of the letters from the journey to
Taganrog, Odessa and Crimea and its literary contexts
The period of the prime growth of the literary journeys in the Russian litera-
ture falls at the beginning of the 19th century. During that time Journey to
Malorossya (1803), Second Journey to Malorossya (1804) and The snippets of the
letters from the journey to Taganrog, Odessa and Crimea („Aglaya” 1812; „Dam-
skij zhurnal” 1823) by Peter Shalikhov (1768?-1852), one of the staunchest fol-
lowers of the sentimentalism, were published. The article involved primarily
handles the problems of poetics connected with the concept of the traveler and
storyteller at the same time and the manner of presenting the places viewed by
him (Crimea, nature, monuments etc.; descriptions in the Paul Sumarokovs
literary journeys). The article is based on the contemporary methodological
proposals (Cultural Turn, Spatial Turn/Topographical Turn).

„The war of nerves” in Ukraine (on the material of
modern Ukrainian newspapers)
The image of the West and its confrontation to Russian society has always
been present in the history of Russian statehood. The myth of confrontation
between West countries and Russia became important factor of identification
for Russian political culture and determined the antagonism ”we” vs. ”they”.
The dichotomy includes many images of ”us” and ”them”, the ”hero” and the
’enemy”, and others. The aim of the article is to analyze and outline the spe-
cific interpretation of the world based on the ,,we” vs. „they” conflict on the
material of Ukrainian newspapers.

Fated for the struggle: motives for the activity
of Stepan Bandera (leader of the Organization of
Ukrainian Nationalists) in Petro Kraluk’s novel
The strong and the lonesome
The text is an analysis of the novel „Sylni ta odynoki” („Strong and lonely”)
by Ukrainian historian and writer Petro Kraluk. The novel is an adaptation
of historical materials and it is a popular biography of Stepan Bandera - the
leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN).
The aim of the text is to analyze how the author explains the reasons
for chich Bandera tarted his activity as a political leader, how he defends him
against accusations of being a cruel terrorists and how he creates negative im-
age of his enemies.

Reports from the warfare in polish newspapers
and the Prussian censorship in the Province
of Posen 1914-1916
During the First World War censorship of Polish newspapers, published in
the area of Prussian Partition, was taken over from civil authority by Prus-
sian military administration. Polish newspapers were reprinting articles from
foreign newspapers, but they did not give them any critical remarks. Mili-
tary censorship accused them of lacking „absolutely patriotic attitude” and
punished them with a vast variety of punishments - from a verbal or written
warning, to liquidation of a newspaper.

The Year 1812 in the Process of French Culture
Expansion in Russia
The article reflects the consequences of a watershed event in the history of
Russia and France from 1812 (Napoleons defeat), which considerably deter-
mined the process of French culture expansion in Russia. Analysing this civi-
lization dialogue, it is easy to notice that Russia was passing through it from
a full phase of almost uncritical fascination with the products of French cul-
ture (language, literature, the philosophy of existence, customs and aesthetic
cannons), losing her own identity, to the phase of mental dualism - paral-
lel and co-existing approaches, after 1812. The former represented disagree-
ment to the further Francophile cultural expansion supporting, together with
the state policy, the disillusion with Gallo-mania, whereas the latter remained
faithful to the Russian-French marriage of cultures.
Agata Chrobot
Georgius Sabinus - a poet concerned with
the problems of Europe. Elegies III 9, IV 1-2.
Throughout history, poets have always been deeply concerned with impor-
tant historical events. In that number was Georgius Sabinus (real name Georg
Schuler, born 23rd April 1508 in Brandenburg, died 2nd December 1560 in
Frankfurt am Oder), one of the most gifted and prolific German Renaissance
poets. Sabinus was a diplomat, poet, valued expert on Greek and Roman lit-
erature, and the first rector of the Albertine University in Krolewiec).
Two elegies: III 9 and IV 1 constitute a poetic correspondence ad-
dressed to Peter Bemb. Sabinus asks the Italian humanist to second his ap-
peals and pleas directed to the rulers of Europe entreating them to ally against
Turkey. The poet expresses his sadness that Europe starts a war; it is, however,
a war of defence. Sabinus supports the need to ally against the barbarians who
depredate the countries of Europe by providing detailed descriptions of the
acts of cruelty by the Turkish army. Elegy IV 2 is an exhortation addressed
to Joachim II Hector - the Brandenburg elector setting off for a campaign
against Turkey. The poet emphasises the fact that the war is not only to defend
the conquered nations, but also to defend the Christian religion.

Pseudo-folklore as a tool of legitimacy
the „golden September 1939” In the Soviet Ukrainea
Pseudo-folklor was an element of Soviet propaganda. In 1939-1940 Soviet
authorities encouraged folklorists, teachers and cultural workers to create and
distribute works that glorify Soviet attack on Poland in September 1939. Such
works were published in the press, performed at concerts and mass demon-
strations. In such a way the Soviet government justified its aggressive policy.

The image of the Swedish kings Charles XII and
Gustav III in the Russian literature of the Enlightenment
period
The article concerns the political relations between Russia and Sweden during
the reign of Peter I and Charles XII, Catherine II and Gustav III. There is dis-
cussed the travelogue prose of Peter Shalikov and Vladimir Izmaylov (Trav-
el to Malorossiya and Travel to south Russia; theme - battle of Poltava) and
the works of Catherine II (fable and comic opera Gorebogatyr’ Kosometovitch;
Gustav III as a prototype of the title character). The interpretive context is the
diary of Alexander Khrapovickyi and the poetry of Theophan Prokopovich,
Gavrila Derzhavin, Semyon Bobrov and others.
Jacek Szlufik
Depiction of Russian and Turkish war
in Vsevolod Garshin’s works
The article concerns works of Vsevolod Garshin related to the Russian-Turk-
ish war of 1877-1878. Main characters of these short stories are usually pri-
vate-volunteers who driven by their sense of service and defense of the coun-
try, are moving into fight against enemy in the name of superior reasons.
However, their enthusiasm is dampened by brutal war reality: hunger, fear of
death, killing and being killed, physical and emotional abuse from their su-
periors. Based on the latest literature concerning war ethics, the author of the
article is pondering over pacifism as significant idea in Garshins short stories.

Ludmila Lambeinová
Refugees from Austrian Galicia in Ceske Budejovice
(Budweis) during the 1st World War in Local Press
The article deals with refugees from Austrian Galicia during the 1st World War.
As Austrian Galicia was multicultural region, refugees were Poles, Jews and
Ukrainians. Due to military operations in the territory of Austrian Galicia,
civilians were obliged to find shelter in other parts of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire. Some of them found asylum in Ceske Budejovice (Budweis) in South
Bohemia (nowadays the Czech Republic). The town had to approach with
number of practical problems e. g. accommodation of refugees, education etc.
The article describes an attitude of the inhabitants of the town towards the
newcomers. The local newspapers from the period 1914-1918 shows that the
inhabitants welcomed the refugees warmly at the beginning of the war. As the
economic conditions deteriorated, the whole-heartily way of thinking about
them disappeared. The arrival of the East-European Jews, mainly orthodox,
was a shock, not only for habitants of Czech lands, but also for the local Jewish
population. Refugees were forced to leave Ceske Budejovice due to decision of
local politicians, although more than thousand refugees stayed in new-created
Czechoslovakia.

The image of Livonia in Ivan Lazhechnikov’s novel
The Last Novik
The paper presents a vision of Livonia during the Russian-Swedish war for
Liefland shown in the novel. Lazhechnikov perceives this country as an area
of confrontation of the two cultures - the Moscovian (Eastern Orthodox) cul-
ture against the European (knights) culture. He places the Russian culture
considerably higher. Drawing an image of Livonia, the writer used a range of
elements taken from the Western European literature (Walter Scottism, Goth-
icism).
