Zusammenfassung:This paper explores Francisco Goya’s response to the crisis of allegory as a form of visual representation. Goya’s use of allegory in a number of works produced about 1800-1820 is considered in relation to a simultaneous crisis of History as a genre. His attempt at representing contemporary events in the Disasters of War evidences a concern shared by the late eighteenth-century theoreticians that discussed the suitability of allegory to represent abstract concepts, such as pain and suffering. Goya’s way of combining word and image renders the painter’s position as either witness or prophet of History problematic. His series plays with the conventions of allegorical language to create a distinct mode of representation where meaning and agency are unsettled and hence constantly negotiated.
