BOSPORAN CITY OF KYTAIA
Part II
This volume discusses materials of the excavation in
Kytaia in 1970-1995 which were not included in the
first volume. To summarize the research, we can note the
following:
- Volume introduces several thousand archaeological
sources, which are products made of stone, bone, various metals,
glass and clay into scientific circulation for the first time. Due
to all these artifacts we could obtain new information about
the features of economic development of the Bosporus city, its
place and role among the small towns of the Bosporus, as well
as of its religious life.
- Among numerous and varied forms of vessels and their
clays, Kytaia clays and products of local potters have been
presumably allocated. We can note that the percentage of
imported pottery has always been significant along with the
prevalence of the products of Bosporus potters and coroplastic
art masters, especially in the V-l centuries BC.
- Sacred life of Kytaia is represented quite vividly. Five
sanctuaries have been excavated in different parts of the
settlementJhe biggest one is the central city sanctuary (“cinder
heap”-excavation II), emerged in the last third of the V century
BC together with the city. It functioned continuously until the V
century BC Implementation of the offerings in the sanctuary of
Demeter at the beginning of its existence from the IV century
BC were complemented by the cult of Aphrodite, the Great
Mother, Hercules and Dionysus characteristic of Eleusinian
traditions. From the Hellenistic period, especially popular gods
in the sanctuary other than Hercules, Dionysus and Aphrodite,
were Thiasos of the last two: Satyrs, Sileni, Maenads, Eros,
and Psyche. The nature of cults in the sanctuary of the lll-V
centuries BC is less clear.
However, it is evident that the ceremonies accompanying
them, were pagan.
In addition to the central sanctuary, two sacred complexes
in the fortress walls: the eastern (excavation IV) and western
(excavation I) were excavated. Sanctuary at the IV excavation
functioned for a long time: from the end of the V century BC till
the IV century BC. At the same digs, two home sanctuary were
found in residential areas. At the coastal excavation V public
sanctuary functioned from the III till the II century BC.
Founds of terracotta, graffiti, altars, numerous votive
objects in all sacred complexes allows to define them as
sanctuaries. All these data are collected in the “Terracotta from
Kytaia sanctuaries” chapter. Kytaia is considered now not only
as a powerful fortress on the southern borders of the Bosporus,
but also a very important center of sacred life of the Bosporus
citizens who lived in the south-eastern part of the Kerch
Peninsula.
The city population initially and until the end of its
existence was Greek; used the Greek language and alphabet
and worshipped the Greek gods. However, the barbarians
penetrated there - in the first centuries of city history - the
Scythians, and from the end of the IV century BC and later -

the Sarmatians. Sarmatian culture elements are represented
in Kytaia to a much lesser extent than the Scythian ones. Such
interactions are well represented in the ritual component in
sanctuaries (using bedding of sea grass, ocher, weapons, etc.),
and in a set of dishes (the presence of Kem-Oba, Scythian and
Sarmatian forms).
Additional research of them allowed to clarify significantly
the topography of the main objects of city infrastructure,
identify and characterize new sacred objects, which were
assumed in previous studies and to clarify the whole picture of
the historical development of the city.
