Performing Arts Music Dance and Drama
Performing arts are one of the important genres of folklore. This art form has great
place in every society of the world by which the people can enjoy and receive
satisfaction. Different scholars have defined differently on this. Renowned folklorist
Dorson discusses in his book entitled Folklore and Folklife: An Introduction thus “a
fourth sector of folklore and folk life may be performing folk arts. Here, we think
primarily of traditional music, dance and drama. While the renditions of a folk tale or
folk songs arc now usually referred to as performances, they are more casual in
nature than the conscious presentation of these arts individuals or groups with folk
instruments, dance, costumes and scenario sect each with the other and often appear
in conjunction.” Hence, performing folk art is one of the most important powerful
traditional media by which everyone can send message to the people. Indian dances
and music are world -renowned. It serves merely not as a medium of entertainment
but it is a powerful medium to feel and express human emotions. Culture is that
complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any
other capability acquired by man as a member of society. An important feature of
Indian culture is its deep sense of continuity. Maharashtra is a store house of
variegated traditions of artistic dance and music. The evidence like literature,
sculpture, inscriptions, etc. reveals that the antiquity of such dance and music goes
back to the time of Bharata s Namyauastra (200BCE to 200CE). In Maharashtra we
do not have any living tradition of a classical dance developed in the local
environment, “Dance and Music were a part of the everyday life of the people in
medieval Maharashtra and the music and dance were performed according to the old
texts”.
Raman Kumar was bom on June 12, 1972 in Seetapur, Uttar Pradesh. He has a
brilliant academic career. I le has completed his graduation degree in First division
from Allahabad University and Post Graduation degree in Dance and Music from
similar university. He has lot of experience in teaching field. He is well linked in
colleagues for his simple and helpful nature.
