| SUMMARY
Only a few centuries in European and world history have witnessed
so many fundamental and varied changes as the „long nineteenth
century. During a period defined by two historical milestones - the
Great French Revolution and the First World War - key events occured,
irreversibly transforming the character of the social order of that
time and shaping the contemporary nations, their borders, and their
constitutions. Nineteenth century was accompanied by revolutions,
war conflicts in Europe and beyond, the culmination of an expansive
European policy in Asia, Africa and the Pacific, industrial revolution,
urbanization, the rise of the Enlightenment, and the promotion of the
idealistic streams of liberalism, Darwinism, eugenics and Marxism.
As a result, modern nations were born with modern frontiers and
societies, modern politics and economic systems.
But what type of role did women play in this normative story of
Europe? For centuries, the female world has been a private sphere
in which only from time to time a penetration was succeeded
through works of art, beautiful and native literature, or documents of
a personal nature such as correspondence, diaries and memoirs. On
the contrary, men and historical events associated with them have
long been perceived as the only ones who make history. In Europe in
the period 1850-1920 a fundamental and irreversible social, cultural,
legal and internal political transformations was achieved. One of the
major pillars of the process of formation of modernizing society and
transforming the existing social order were represented by women.
Their growing position in the society, increasing influence on the
shaping of the individual nations, increasingly extensive activities

in public administration and academic circles and, ultimately, their
share of crime - generally speaking, the transformation of the period
construct of perception of femininity - this present book deals with.
The aim of the monograph, focused primarily on the position of
women in the Pilsen region, is to analyze the history of women in this
region in the broader context of the social development of the second
half of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century, especially
in relation to the attitude towards women and their emancipation,
not only in matters of the public sphere, i.e. education, participation
in community life, founding of societies, exercising of professions,
and others, but also in the private sphere, where the book presents
a woman, among other things, as a wife, housewife, mother and active
believer. In order to achieve the most comprehensive picture of the
woman at that time, the work also focuses on the research of period
female criminality and generally accepted feminine ideals. Its regional
directing focuses on each of the surveyed subjects into a wider
European and general Czech framework, which leads to better views
of the forms and manifestations of femininity across Europe, as well as
to the comparison of their history. Through the effort to contextualize
this issue in wider national contexts, which means the insertion of
the subject into the broader framework of Czech and European
history, simultaneously, within the chosen structure, it is possible to
find contact points in the development of the female question in the
Pilsen region with the development of emancipation in Bohemia and
Europe. In general, the book deals with a century that has an immense
importance in the history of women.
An analytical comparison of the female movement and the
development of the female question in Pilsen region can lead to the
nonstriking conclusion that the significant differences did not exist
between the Pilsen and Czech women s emancipation efforts, at least
in the reference points related with period promoted ideal of femininity
and the struggle for realizing their own goals and aspirations. If they
wanted to fulfill their natural role, women in both the Pilsen region
and the Czech lands should become good wives, loving mothers and

devotees of faith. These dogmatic provisions, on which the First
World War had a significant impact, did not concern only the Czech
lands, but the traditional paradigms of „femininity also dominated
virtually the entire 19th century Europe, although naturally with
the typical distinctions of individual nations across the continent.
Flowever, the main line of the emancipation process remained de facto
unchanged, despite the fact of the length of the road to its completion,
therefore the gain of women s electoral rights - from the founding of
women s societies and the increasing participation of women in public
affairs (especially through charity), despite attempts to implement girls
professional, secondary and college education, a gradual tendency
towards the politicization and activation of the struggles for universal
suffrage until its achievement. A similar situation was of course also in
the Pilsen region, where the process of „visibility of women, although
often enriched by regional sentiment, was in line with the course in
a nationwide or pan-European environment.
In the 19th century the European woman was viewed through
a traditionally maintained and de facto invariant concept of perception
of femininity, attributing to her the role of mother, wife, housewife,
God-fearing Christian and conscious patriot. At the beginning of the
fundamental transformation of European society, leading to a growing
female effort for its realization, lies the Great French Revolution,
bringing along with the enlightenment the idea of equality of people
and human rights, „surprisingly referring only to the male part of the
population, which has led women to the first thoughts about how to
change this unfortunate state. The empowerment efforts of women
grew stronger in the second half of the 19th century, mainly due to
socio-political changes that represented the irreversible outcome of
the revolution of 1848.
The first phase of the emancipation process, culminating in the early
nineties of the 19th century by a progressive shift towards the issue of
women s electoral law, was de facto started through political liberation
and establishment of the first women s associations in the 1960s. Over
a period of about 30 years, there has been considerable change in the

way of thinking about a woman and her individual activities, which
has led to a negative reaction to the growing female movement. In the
second phase, marked by dramatic changes and dynamic processes
of modernization and nationalization, the cultural, legal, political and
social situation of a woman was transformed, although the changes
were temporarily regressive. The First World War and the period
immediately following brought with them the strengthening of the
perspectives of the women s movement and the growing desire for full
equality of women. Women s entry into peak politicy, an increasing
number of university-educated and professionally active women
involved in public life, along with prominent lifestyle changes have
forced the public since the 1920s to think and explore women s identity.
In 1914, at the beginning of the First World War, only male voters
were active voters in all European countries, with the exception of
Finland and Norway, giving women the right to vote in 1906 and 1913.
After its end, and along with the fatal transformation of European
society, many countries (including the „newly bom ones that arose
from the disintegration of Austria-Flungary), have introduced universal
suffrage. It can be said that the experience of the First World War has
become a catalyst that has accelerated and brought to successful end
the decades-long struggle of European women. Flowever, in order to
avoid excessive generalization, it is important to note that, in the case
of not a small number of European states, the introduction of equal
voting rights can not be discussed until long of the 20th century.
Thesecondhalfofthel 9th century strengthened intimate relationships
among household members and is therefore considered the beginning
of the „sweet home era. The household has become a private sector
with the strong emotional ties of its members, and attentive to the
wishes and needs of children. The First World War reinforced family
cohesion even more. Equally important function in the emancipation
process also occupied the transformation of the household in terms of
the proportion of women in its operation and smooth functioning. The
European household has undergone significant changes, especially
after 1914, due to the transition to a food-saving war economy. The

negative impact of the war on the civilian population s ability to work
has shattered the concept of division of labor and has fully involved
women in the labor process. After 1918, households returned to their
pre-war form, but women s professional involvement was reflected
in more effective management and redistribution of duties. Piety,
which became a matter of private character in the nineteenth century,
played a key role in the lives of European women who have adopted
the role of active religious believers. Through the founding of religious
societies, the main mission of which was, in the vast majority of cases,
charitable activity, women were increasingly involved in public affairs
and, under the auspices of philanthropy, spread the progressive ideas
of a female question.
And thus women s history comprised, comprise and will always
comprise an important part of human history. In all their forms and
social roles, women represented the counterweight of a man and,
together with him, helped to create the image of „Europeanism ,
whose direct descendant is contemporary European society.
