Summary
The Konkin Brothers: A Discovery. People of the 1920s — 50s Leningrad and
Berlin1 presents for the first time a unique corpus of photographs from the family
collection that Olga Maslova-Walther found at her grandmother’s apartment
in central Saint Petersburg. This private archive assembles hundreds of images
made bv brothers Yakov and Evgenv Henkin who lived in Leningrad and Berlin,
respectively, in the 1920s — 50s. From the impressive body of work only 142
w ere selected in order to create a story of urban and political change, as well as
of passion for preserving memories at a time when photography was increasingly
becoming a medium of choice for citv dw ellers.
The two brothers were born in Rostov-on-Don to an intelligentsia family. After
moving from Rostov-on-Don in 1950 Yakov worked as an engineer in Leningrad,
while Evgeny made thereminvox performances in Germany. Both were inspired
photographic amateurs: Yakov portrayed mostly familv members and public
events, Evgeny documented people ‘types’ and street accidents. In 1956 Evgeny
moved back to the USSR. The following vear he got arrested and sentenced to the
‘supreme penalty’ (Soviet euphemism for execution). In 1941 Yakov was called up
for militaiy service, and the same vear died from injuries. The archive persisted
across the twentieth-century turmoil, to be re-discovered by ancestors and re-
interpreted bv researchers.
The images by the Henkin brothers form a complex series where personal
memories and cultural narratives intertwine. While capturing the very private
moments of the Henkins’ lives, they also reflect the historical events that were
occurring at the time, as w ell as cultural structures of the newlv formed, modern
societies. Rare candid photographs offer glimpses of propaganda-dominated
landscapes, socialist parades and sport events, fascist demonstrations and boycott
of Jewish businesses, as well as detailed documentation of Soviet and German
even day life.
The viewer is invited to make a step tow ards the more subjective understanding
of documentary Instead of the accusatorv 'truth of document', or the reformatory
aesthetic experience, which marks the two poles of photographic culture of the
1950s, the bodv of work bv the Henkin brothers tells about the work of memory,
the process of construction of the personal histoiy, which is, in turn, aesthetically
fruitful.
