Manors of the Joniskis Region. Daunorava, Daunorava Minor,
Bertauciai and Satkünai
Summary
Daunorava (//aenopoea) andits adjacent villages (Vytauciai (Bumo/irnoea), Nartauciai (HapmoAmeea),
and others (BuywcKauHeea)) were first mentioned in 1557. It was back then in the 16th century, when the
manor was established. It was owned by Michal Maszkowski and his successors till the early 17th century.
The name of the Vytauciai Village that belonged to the manor relates it to Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania
and implies that the origins of the manor date back to the 1st half of the 15th century (after 1426), when a
ducal estate was established at the location as an outpost on the frontier.
The Daunorava Manor (Pol. Downarow (Wielki), Downarowa, Downarowo, Dawnarowa, Dawno- 179

/doeHopoeo, J/oeuopoea, //oenapoea, //oeuapoe-b, /(aeuapoeu, which was also called the Prankine Manor,
Prankiske or the Frank’s Manor by the locals) has been interesting researchers for over a century now,
and the list of the relevant bibliography is quite extensive. First of all, around 1900, the manor captured
attention of the researchers interested in genealogy of the specific families and their estates (Fircks, 1900;
Stavenhagen, 1909; 1937; 1944). In 1926, Heinz Pirang (1876-1936), the researcher of the German archi-
tecture from Riga, provided a short description of the manors in Daunorava (Donnershof) and Malgüziai
(Malguschen) (both in the Joniskis District) owned by the Keyserlingks.
In 1557-1623 Daunorava was an estate of the Maszkowski, in 1623-1665 it was owned by Marcinkie-
wicz, in 1665—1684 by von Tranckwitz (who rented it since 1636), in 1684—1785 by the barons von der
Brüggen (Pol. Brygin) (4 generations), in 1785-1797 by von Manteuffel gen. Szöge, in 1797-1904/1916 by
the von Pfeilitzer gen. Franck family (4 generations), in 1904/1916—1940 by the counts Keyserlingk, and in
1940 it was nationalized by the Soviets. The manor was rented and mortgaged (in 1594 and 1615 to Woyna,
in 1685-1691 to von Plettenberg, ca. 1779 to von Wigandt, etc.). After the Land Reform of 1922, the Manor
of Daunorava Minor went to Theodor Witte, whereas the Daunorava Manor itself (250.05 ha) remained
the property of Martha Wilh. Anna Keyserlingk, geb. von der Brüggen (21.01.1864-02.1945, the Stende
Branch). Both manors were nationalized by the Soviets in 1940. Till the mid-i9th century the Daunorava
Manor covered 2,400 dessiatins of land (approximately 2,622 ha), it included the Daunorava Forest, the
Manor of Daunorava Minor (being mentioned since the 17th century), and 9 villages: Bertauciai (a falwark
was established instead in 1845), Degesiai, Likaiciai, Nartauciai, Satkünai (a falwark was established inste-
ad in 1910-1912), Paberziai, Prociünai, Sargünai, and Vytauciai. The number of homesteads in the villages
varied: 62 in 1667, 57 in 1690, up to 30 in 1783 and 1830-1831, 29 in 1846 and 1854, 31 in 1775, 36 in 1785,
1797,1822,1827, and 1834, 37 in 1817, 39 in 1795,1798, and 1811, and 40 in 1790. Before the Land Reform
of 1922, the manor covered 1,396.2373 ha.
In the late 18th - the 1st half of the 19th century, the homestead of the Daunorava Manor included 21 buil-
ding. Just like other i8th-i9th century manors of the middle-rank nobility, it was comprised of four parts:
the representational one in the central part, utilitarian manufacturing buildings eastwards and westwards
from the mansion, and the stack yards in the north by the Platonis Brook. In the representational part, the
buildings formed a circle: the mansion was in the northern side by the Platonis Brook, and then clock-wise
there was a house for servants and workers, a stable and a shed for carriages, barns and the kitchen (the

mistress’ house). The present layout of the manor homestead was established in the mid-i9,h century under
the von Pfeilitzer gen. Franck (1800-1877), when the main living and utilitarian buildings were constructed
and the representational yard was rearranged in 1844-1855: locations of some buildings were changed. The
records of 1877 and 1928 mention 43 buildings; there was the Big Inn nearby. Since the 19th century the
structure of the main yard and its symmetry was determined by the mansion, the barns, the stables, and
the servants’ houses; an open area of the yard was filled with an oval parterre. In the Daunorava Manor,
as well as in other manors of the middle-rank nobility, the representational function was less expressed:
the utilitarian yard was directly connected to the main one. The entire complex of the manor with its park
and ponds covered about 7-8.5 ha and was a landmark on the Semigallian plain landscape. The Daunorava
Manor is a unique complex representing the traditional 19th century Courland and Northern Lithuanian
wooden and clay architecture with timber-framed gables, but it is falling into decay implacably (as for now,
only 5 buildings remain and the main house is crumbling down).
The Manor of the Daunorava Minor (Pol. Downarowo Maly, Germ. Klein Donnerhof, Kl. Downa-
row, Rus. Man. JJeopuK (1843), Manuu floenapoe-b (1846, 1854), . Man. floenapoe-b (1865), Manoe
Moenapoeo (1877, 1903), 0. IJoenapoeo (1910)) has been mentioned since the 17th century. It was located
on the right bank of the Vesetinis Brook. The surviving layout of the Daunorava Minor dating to 1786(7)
provides a clear view of the locations of 8 buildings recorded in the inventory drawn ca. 1785 (in 1797 only
5 ones were mentioned). Out of a dozen buildings constructed in the 19th - early 20th century, only a few
have survived.
The Bertauciai Falwark (Germ. Bartautschen, Rus. Eepmayyu (1846), 0. Eepmoyye (1877), Eapmoe-
ye (1881), um. Eepmoeyu (1908), 0. Eopmoeye (1910)) was established in the end of 1845 instead of the
village under the same name. The inventory of 1877 recorded 15 buildings. Out of all of the falwark buil-
dings constructed in the late 19th - early 20th century, only a few ones has survived till nowadays. The Satku-
nai Falwark (also called the Batrakai extension (3acmn HOKb BampaKoe'b, 1912) or Satkuneliai; the present
Daunoriske Village) was established instead of the village under the same name in 1910-1912. The layout
of 1912 depicted 8 buildings; 2 of them were houses of servants and workers. Presently, only a barn dating
to the early 20th century survives.
The documents of the I7th-i9th century as well as the press reveal economical activities of the manor.
Traditionally, the main activity was agriculture (layouts of 1786 and 1912 depict drainage ditches; invento-
ries of 1797 mention wheat, rye, oat, peas, and potatoes in large amounts since 1834-1838), cattle-breading
and poultry (inventories of 1797 mention cattle, pigs, sheep, geese, turkeys, ducks, and chicken), and fo-
restry. Gardening, beekeeping and fishery were slightly less developed. Besides that, there was a distillery
promoting an extensive production of alcohol (1797), several inns (up to four), and the trade with Riga, the
largest port in the region, was rather active. In the late 19th century, the manor used fertilizers and had a
well-developed dairying.
In the late i6th-i8th century, the manor was more an economical unit, than a family residence (since
1594» it was often rented or mortgaged). However, there were periods in the 19th century when the Dauno-
rava and Daunorava Minor served as main residences of the von Pfeilitzer gen. Franck family or its indivi-
dual members (they had a residence in Jelgava and also owned other manors in the Courland Governorate:
Franksesava (Germ. Franck-Sessau) and Ogliena (Germ. Ogley). The inventory of 1877 provides a general
insight into the interior of the mansion and absence of luxury therein. The mansion of the Daunorava
Manor had no wall-paper, no family portraits or other original works of art (only 13 framed watercolor
paintings by Hermann Friedrich Waeber (1761-1833) depicting Courland castles were mentioned), no col-
lection of arms, few candlesticks (only two were mentioned), no other luxury items, the table silver was
modest, and there was no library. Besides that, the inventory mentions no hunting rifles and the livestock
list records no hounds, though the barons von Francks were fond of hunting. This implies that the manor
no longer performed any representational function by then (although in 1881 it was indicated as the main
residence of Rudolph von Pfeilitzer gen. Franck (1843-1904)). Therefore, Daunorava was treated more like
an economical unit focusing on the development of economical activities and their continuity, than a per-
manent residence and investments into luxury and representational items were rather scarce. There is no
data on the interiors of the mansion or art collections therein during the period of 1904/1916-1940, when
the manor belonged to the counts Keyserlingk.
The Daunorava Manor and its owners are related to the formation of a large Latvian community from
the Courland Governorate in the Joniskis area. Inventories of 1785-1797 mention a lot of German-La-
tvian names (Wilhelm, Ernst, Greta, Friz, Gedart, Lisa, Otto, etc.), Latvian names (Indrikis, Ansis (Germ.
Hans)), German surnames (Wirting, Reymers-Reymann, Rebicca), and Latvian ones (Bauskenieks, Bozis,
Bulis, Duncis, Juta (Jutus), Kaselüns, Indrikis Krümins, Kugrëns, Saule, etc.). Homesteads in the villages
imply migration of German and Latvian Lutherans from the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia before the
18th century. In order to satisfy the needs of a rather numerous Lutheran community in Joniskis a church
was built for it in 1848 (or 1847 based on the alternative data). Inventories dating to the late 18th centu-
ry - 1846-1864 provide valuable information on their homesteads and lifestyle. Since the late 18th century
there was a visible difference between the Lithuanian homesteads and the homesteads of the peasants of
the Daunorava Manor: the later were organized in the Courland manner. The differences persisted till the
mid-20th century.
