505 | 8 | |a "Algae are some of the fastest growing plants in the world and up to 50 per cent of their weight is oil.As well as its high oil content microalgae is also rich in other high value compounds such as vitamins, protein fatty acids, pigments, antioxidants and sterols. All these compounds can be extracted for use by the pharmaceutical industry and the algae itself can be used for feeding of livestock, particularly fish where there are hopes that it may be able to replace fish meal used in fish feeds in the future. Microalgae is also used in water purification systems. So far only a few species of microalgae are under mass cultivation. The potential for expansion is potentially huge with some estimates suggesting that there are a further one million or more, so far unexploited species, representing a mind-boggling untapped resource. The second edition of this extremely popular book contains 36 chapters. Nineteen of these are written by new authors. There are 11 new chapters covering important new aspects including novel photobioreactors, techno-economic analysis of algal mass culture, outdoor mass cultivation of oil-bearing microalgae, and the biology and large scale culture of several newly exploited species including Chlorella, Spirulina and Dunaniella. This book is intended for Aquaculture engineers, phycologists, pharmaceutical, biofuel and fish feed industry and aquaculture personnel.
