introduction
xi
Considers the place of Friel in English-language drama after World War
Two and surveys the scope of Friel s long career and the breadth of Friel
criticism.
CHAPTER ONE * 1
Early Journalism and Stories
Surveys the articles written for the Irish Times and The Irish Press, along
with the critical problems posed by these pieces, which are neither stand-
ard short stories nor traditional journalism. It then presents an overview
of the two dozen conventional stories written between 1959 and 1965. It
ends with a summary of the criticism of the four most discussed stories:
‘Among the Ruins’, ‘The Diviner’, ‘The Foundry House’, and ‘The Saucer
of Larks’.
CHAPTER TWO 8
Early and ‘Withdrawn’ Plays: A Sort of Freedom (1958), To
This Hard House (1958), A Doubtful Paradise (1960), The
Enemy Within (1962), The Blind Mice (1963)
Examines Friel’s two radio plays for the BBC that mark his transition from
stories set in agrarian Donegal to plays in working-class Northern Ireland,
seen as the seed-bed for the themes that characterize his later plays. It
ends by looking at two plays about religious figures—the first a medieval
Irish monk, the second a disgraced young priest in contemporary Northern
Ireland—that display Friel’s growing confidence constructing setting and
character.

CHAPTER THREE 1
Philadelphia, Here I Come! (1964)
Surveys the background, context, and influences behind Fuel s firs-
international success. It then reviews the interpretations of the play’
ground-breaking splitting of the main character into two characters as -
way to dramatize inner thoughts. Finally, it looks at discussions of memory
music, emigration, and oedipal struggle in a play that is seen as having
given voice to a new generation of playwrights.
CHAPTER FOUR 35
Plays of the Later 1960s: The Loves of Cass McGuire (1966),
Lovers (1967), Crystal and Fox (1968), The Mundy Scheme (1969)
Explores a group of plays sharing a focus on love and memory. Although
Friel experiments with unexpected settings and character motivations, the
chapter focuses on the playwright’s dramaturgical maturation, leading to
his first overtly political play.
CHAPTER FIVE 43
Plays of the Early 1970s: The Gentle Island (1971), The
Freedom of the City (1973), Volunteers (1975)
Explores how in these plays Friel sought to infuse his fascination with
memory and family drama with such national issues as history and the
country’s rapid modernization. It also focuses on how these plays portray
the violence and culture of violence associated with The Troubles.
CHAPTER SIX 52
Living Quarters (1977) and Aristocrats (1979)
Examines two plays that mark a turning point in Friel’s career, where
he develops a more pronounced ability to construct Chekhovian family
dynamics. It focuses on the first of Friel’s three great plays of 1979-1980,
Aristocrats, where he skilfully explores the burdens of family, history, class,
and ambition.
CONTENTS ix
CHAPTER SEVEN 62
Faith Healer (1979)
Surveys the many and diverse critical responses to the play that many
have identified as Friel’s masterpiece. It reviews the proposed sources
and development of the play, and the work’s exploration of memory, artistic
inspiration, ritual, and love.
CHAPTER EIGHT 75
Translations (1980)
fT
Considers the play that redefined Friel’s career, establishing him as the
decade’s preeminent playwright, it looks at how the play’s overt incorpo-
ration of theories of language create a multi-layered exploration of two
cultures in conflict, each seeking to translate the other. It also surveys the
debates that arose over Friel’s representation of history, his adaption of
historical sources, and the play’s view of Irish nationalism.
CHAPTER NINE 98
Plays of the 1980s: ‘The American Welcome’ (1980), Three
Sisters (1981), The Communication Cord (1982), Making
History (1988), The London Vertigo (1990)
Looks at the plays written for Field Day, a Northern Irish theatre company
that Friel established in 1980. In the wake of the critical controversies
created by Translations, these works allowed Friel to explore more fully his
views of how the confluence of language, history, and politics structure
daily lives.
CHAPTER TEN 111
Dancing at Lughnasa (1990)
Explores Friei’s most loved and most staged work. It considers how Friel
mines the lives of his mother and aunts to explore the social disruptions
that beset Ireland as it became a newly independent state. It examines
the conflicts between desire and social mores, religion and spirituality, and

memory and history. Finally, it surveys the many discussions of the play’s
diverse use of dance as an expression of these tensions.
CHAPTER ELEVEN 126
Plays of the 1990s: Wonderful Tennessee (1993), Molly
Sweeney (1994), Give Me Your Answer, Do! (1997)
Presents the diverse responses to this decade’s plays, united only by their
setting in contemporary Ireland. It explores Friel’s critique of contemporary
Ireland as a nation whose unprecedented economic success has materially
enriched the country yet engendered existential crisis among its citizens.
CHAPTER TWELVE 137
Last Plays: ‘Afterplay’ (2002), Performances (2003), The
Home Place (2005)
Considers Friel’s plays written amid declining health and the search for
a defining artistic statement. It considers his unexpected decision to
set plays in Central Europe and Russia, as he explores the intersection
between artistic inspiration and personality. Finally, it looks at his last play,
set In Ireland, and its treatment of ciass, art, oedipal conflict, and the sci-
entific justification of colonialism.
CONCLUSION 144
Considers the playwright’s legacy following his death in 2015. It also con-
siders how and why the critical focus might change in the years to follow.
