An in-depth analysis o f the work o f one o f the
twentieth century’s most innovative writers
Kathy A cker’s body o f work is one of the m ost significant collection s of
experim ental w riting in English. In Kathy Acker: W ritin g the Im possible ,
Georgina Colby explores A cker’s com positional p ro cesses and intricate
experim ental p ractices, from early poetic exercises w ritten in the 1970s to
her final w ritings in 1997. Through original archival research , Colby tra ce s
the stages in A cker’s w riting and draws on her knowledge o f unpublished
m anuscripts, notebooks, essays, illustrations and correspondence to
produce new ways of reading A cker’s works. R ather than treating Acker
as a postm odern writer, this book argues that A cker continued a radical
m odernist engagement with the crisis of language, and carried out a series
of experim ents in com position and w riting that are com parable in scope and
rigor to her m odernist p red ecessors Stein and Joyce. E ach chapter focu ses on a
p articu lar com positional method and in sists on the im portance o f avant-garde
experim ent to the p rocess of m aking new non-conventional m odes of meaning.
Com bining close attention to the form of A cker’s experim ental w ritings
with a consideration of the literary cu ltu res from which she emerged, Colby
positions A cker as a key figure in the A m erican avant-garde and a pioneer of
contem porary experim ental wom en’s writing.
