205 Summary The life story of Augustin Preučil, a native of Central Bohemian Třebsín, is a classic story of a realized treason. After the occupation of the Czech lands and the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, Preučil attempted to obtain a visa to Brazil but he was arrested by Gesta po in Prague and he volunteered to their service as an informer. Commi ssioned to gain information about the Czechoslovak foreign resistance, in July 1939 he was sent across the border to Poland to the forming Czecho slovak unit in Male Bronowice near Cracow. He left Poland with the Cze choslovak military transport to France, where, after the beginning of the World War II, he joined the French Air Force and worked together with other Czechoslovaks at the military base Chartres. He supplied informa tion to Prague Gestapo intelligence, from both Poland and France. After the defeat of France, in summer 1940, he left with the rest of the Czecho slovak military units for the British Isles where he joined the British air force - the Royal Air Force Volunteers Reserve. After a short stay in the Czechoslovak depot in Cosford, he flew on a number of British Mainte nance Units (MU) and Operational Training Units (OTU) while he was test-flying the repaired aircraft or while he was working as an assistant flying instructor. In summer 1941 in Sunderland, where he was flying on the 55th OTU, he got married to Muriel Kirby. Two months later, on September 18, 1941, during his training flight, he flew off with the British fighter Hurricane Mk.I across the North Sea to Belgium,
where he crash-landed near to the village of Ortho. He han ded his plane over and he reported the Belgian family, which provided him with assistance during his landing, to the Germans. After that two Belgians, Armand Durand and Léon Charlier, were executed by the Na zis. Preučil then extensively testified at Luftwaffe headquarters in Berlin as well as at the Gestapo in Prague about the situation in England and

In the Protectorate, Preučil conti nued in his career of an active informer of Gestapo and he caused arrests and even deaths of many people with his activities. After the liberation of Czechoslovakia, he was arrested and brought to justice in the Extraordi nary Peoples Court in Prague; he was sentenced to death and executed. His wife Muriel, who considered him to be a hero fallen in the war, lear ned the truth about the real role of her husband after the war. To compare the degree of Preučiľs treason, the life stories of another three people are presented. These people were also in the ranks of the Czechoslovak foreign resistance but eventually they betrayed and coope rated, more or less, with Gestapo. It’s a case of Antonin Vašíř, who escaped from the work deployment in Germany to Poland where he joined the Czechoslovak military unit. The re, however, he aroused suspicion and he was subsequently sent back to the Protectorate by the Polish police. He extensively testified at Gestapo in Brno about the situation in Poland, and thereby he caused the impris onment of Czech citizens. However, his criminal history and unreliability brought him to the German court which condemned him to impris onment where he stayed until the liberation in April 1945. After the war, Vašíř was tried before the Extraordinary Peoples Court and condemned to many years’ imprisonment. Another story is about Viliam Gerik, who flew to the Protectorate as a member of the paratroop unit ZINC with a mission to
fight against Germans. However, thereafter he got into the hopeless situation because the connection to the domestic resistance had failed. Instead of choosing a suicide, he chose a path of treason, he volunteered to the Gestapo and he worked as an informer. At the end of the war, he attempted to find the way out by contacting the domestic resistance, but he chanced on another informer only, which resulted in his placement in a concentration camp in Dachau. After the liberation, there was a trial which ended in a death penalty for military betrayal. The last story about Karel Curda is similar. He also flew to the Pro tectorate as a member of the paratroop unit called OUT DISTANCE. He, also in fear, chose the path of treason and after the assassination of
Summary 207 Reinhard Heydrich, Deputy Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, in June 1942, he voluntarily turned himself in to the Gestapo. His betrayal meant a real disaster: all information he revealed to Gestapo, brought a death for the majority of his fellow fighters - the parachutists, as well as the hundreds of their fellow workers. The Gestapo, which was helplessly lo oking for the assassins until then, eliminated the entire network thanks to his betrayal. After that, Curda worked as an active informer up to the end of the war. After the liberation of Czechoslovakia, Curda was arrested, sentenced to death and executed. Preučil, Curda, Gerik, Vašíř. Four names, four different fates. Four dif ferent degrees of guilt and four sentences. Three death penalties and one imprisonment. Were they rightful? It remains for the reader to consider... Translated by Monika Křtěnová
