SYLEJMAN MEHMETI
FOR THE ALBANIAN
Sylejman Ahmet Mehmeti was born on July 23, 1928, in the village
of Vojnoc in the municipality of Shtime, father Ahmeti and mother Eminja.
He was raised in a patriotic family that has made a valuable contribution to
the major Albanian national affair. Beeing of such kind of a family, some of
its members, as Sylejman and others, were persecuted and mistreated
throughout the time of the rule of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, but also during
the time of Socialist Yugoslavia. Sylejman married in 1946 at a young age,
with Mrs. Bedrije, of the Sadiku family, bom in 1928 in the village of
Gadime, municipality of Lipjan. In their family life, three sons were bom
Enver, Ekrem and Fahriu.
The formation of Sylejmani s personality, the cultivation of the values
of love for his homeland, the non-resignation and the augmentation of the
national affair, were influenced by his father Ahmet, by Mulla Vesel Guta
and his brother Adem Guta and by his uncles Rama and Aziz.
Already in his youth, Sylejman defined for himself the sacred mission of
teaching and pedagogue, whom he committed with devotion and love until
the day he was imprisoned.
After being released from prison, the government did not allow him
to continue the mission of the teacher whom he loved very much. Although
under continuous surveillance, he still wanted to give all of his knowledge to
his students, therefore he moved to Pristina.
Sylejman s message was to look for work with dedication, each of his
own prism, to unite our minds and knowledge. It is a national interest and

great value to work, learn and serve the homeland. A statement in the
Mehmeti family chapel spooken by a well-known hoxha follows: Those who
preserve faith and advance schooling, God helps you and the nation you love.
For himself, Sylejman always said, as he had heard from his father and his
elderly family members: I need to work and not become an enemy tool”.
His love of homeland Sylejman, also showed through poems and
writings where pride woke up, calling and spreading the voice of resignation
against oppression and displacement from the homeland. In the famous hall
of his uncle Rame Syla, meetings of many known personalities of the country
were held. In those meetings they will not pass without patriotic messages,
which were mobilization and dedication to the masses - for the spread of the
light of knowledge for national freedom.
For Sylejman Mehmeti, in honor and remembrance of the creator,
patriot and pious teacher, but also imprisoned and permanently persecuted,
we are publishing this monograph starting with the moment of Sylejman s
education and formation of personality, experiences through the last moments
of his life. Part of the monograph will also be Syleyman s predecessors and
descendants.
The research on the patriotic activity of personalities such as Sylejman
Mehmeti, his father Ahmet, and some of his family personalities who had
played an important role in our distant historical past, were demanding and
responsible. But when courage is challenged, the researcher opens the door to
unravel the anathema figures so far. Based on the archival resources and on
empirical research, I tried hardly to give a modest contribution to the
brightening of this figure and of some personalities of his family and
Sylejman s associates and inspirers. Through archival documents and the
informants of the time, I have managed to keep these personalities from
covering the dust of forgetfulness.
This monograph is methodologically divided into four parts and
within their respective chapters.
In the FIRST part, divided into chapters are included:
The first chapter presents the settlement Vojnovc, the birthplace of
Sylejman Mehmeti, which included: Vojnovci - geographic-historical view,
antiquity, microtoponyms, written documents, families and neighborhoods in
Vojnovc and number of inhabitants;

The second chapter, highlights the history of the Mehmeti family,
including: the origin of the Mehmeti family, the Mehmeti family s geometry,
the Mehmeti family s properties and activities, the residential, economic and
auxiliary objects of the Mehmeti family (the Mehmeti family tower, House
of Mehmeti family, Rame Syla, Houses built by Mehmeti family, House
garden and auxiliary facilities) and Mosque of Vojnoci.
Chapter three deals with these topics: different historical events in
Vojnoc and Mehmeti family, Mehmeti family during Ottoman rule, Kosovo
occupation by Serbian forces in 1912 to 1914, and Mehmeti family (Attack
of Serb comrades in the house of Ramë Syla - Mehmeti and Secondary Silk
Invaders), Vojnoci and the Mehmeti family during the First World War 1914-
1918 (Humanity of the Second Sylvae); Vojnoc and Mehmeti family during
the Yugoslav Kingdom 1918-1941, World War II period and Mehmeti family
1941-1945 (Contribution of Ramw Sylw to the Albanian standardization of
Kosovo s onomastic corps, Contribution of the Mehmeti family to the
protection of the border and the homeland) Vojnoc and Mehmeti family in
the period of socialist Yugoslavia after 1945: Contribution of the Mehmeti
family to the non-displacement of the population from Vojnoci and
surrounding settlements, Confiscation of the property of the Mehmeti family
and others in Vojnoc, Nationalization of the property of the Mehmeti family,
Collection of surplus In the Vojnoc family and in the family Mehmeti,
Cooperativeism in Vojnoc and the family Mehmeti, weapons action and
family Mehmeti, experiences of the inhabitants of Vojnoc until the last war
of the Serbian aggressor and the contribution of the inhabitants of the village
of Vojnoc in the fight against the Serbian aggressor in the years 1998-1999.
The fourth chapter includes: the contribution of the Mehmeti family
to the establishment and operation of the meow-madrasa in Vojnoc, Mejtepi
- Madrasa in Vojnoc and Work and Vejsel Guta s activity in Vojnoc’s meow-
madrasa.
- In SECOND part Sylejman Ahmet Mehmeti, the following topic is
elucidated with in these chapters:
In the first chapter, the following topics are discussed: Sylejmani s
Birth and Growth, Child Life and Sylejmani s interest in reading literacy,

the Lower Albanian Gymnasium in Ferizaj, Sylejmani at the Normal School
in Gjakova and employment as a teacher at the elementary school in

The second chapter includes the arrest, prosecution and detention of
Sylejman Mehmeti, which consists of: Arrest, Indictment, investigatory
Debriefing, the Torture during investigation. Judgment, Complaints and
Punishment.
Chapter Three lightens the displacement of Sylejmani’s family in
Pristina, his employment and death at a very young age.
Chapter four introduces the patriotic activity of Sylejman Mehmeti,
including the April 1958 meeting in Sylejmani s home and Sylejmani s
patriotic activities after his release from prison. In the fifth chapter particular
emphasis is devoted to the literary creativity and folklore collection by
Sylejman Ahmeti-Mehmeti.
In THIRD part it is written about the heirs, the descendants of
Sylejman Mehmet, the boys Enver, Ekrem and Fahriu and their close families.
In FOURTH part, friends, colleagues and Sylejman s former students present
their memories.
This book s value enhances with plenty of Sylejman s photographs,
his family, residential and other objects as well as some authentic archive
documents of the time.
