SUMMARY In spite of the vast geographical distance between Central Europe and Latin Amer ica, limiting the intensity of relations, contacts between the two regions have en joyed a 500-year tradition. The latter may be classified into four periods - with all of them attracting interest of Central-European and Latin-American historians as well as of experts on the history of Atlantic World in other countries. As envisaged, in recent years there has been a growing volume of studies on the relationships between Central Europe and Latin America published by Latin-American scholars in countries maintaining closest contacts with the Central-European region - that is Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba and Mexico. The same trend applies to Central Europe with scholars in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic en gaged in studying the relationships. While previous research focused on earlier periods and Central-European mis sionary activities in Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the New Word, the scope of interest today is much broader with the main research focus, besides economic and political contacts, on Central-European emigres in Latin America during the 19th and 20th centuries, or the image of Latin America in Central-European societies. This is also testified by chapters in this collective volume presenting contributions by historians from Argentina, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Spain. Six chapters deal with Argentinian issues. The first two focus on contacts in the 1930s when part of the German emigre community was adherent to Nazi ideology. Annexation of Austria
to the Third Reich, celebrated in Buenos-Aires’ Luna Park and organized by the German Ambassy, was widely discussed in press and is ana lyzed by the authors of the first chapter. Nazism and the policies of Argentinian governments are addressed in the second chapter tracing the lifeline of the Polish emigré Gershon Willner who emigrated to Argentina in the 1920s, obtained citizenship there, then returned to Poland and after the German occupation fell victim to the Nazi régime. During the court case of Ad olf Eichman in 1961, Willner’s fate served as an example of governmental policies in the Atlantic World in various historical moments. Chapter three deals with the life of a Czech emigré to Argentina in the 1930-1940s and his view on the status or labourers in the country. Chapter fout traces the jour neys of Czech antomobile enthusiast F. A. Elstner who travelled through parts of Argentina and Bolivia in 1938 in his small Czech car Skoda Popular, and depicted Argentina as a country with abundant community of Czech emigres in his book Tango Argentino. Business relations between Eastern Europe and Argentina in the 1980s are the topic of Chapter Six. The tension between Washington and Buenos Aires in the preceding period motivated both the Argentinian government and East-European 223
governments to foster trade - Eastern Europe imported Argentinian agricultural produce and exported, especially from Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union, ma chinery and equipment for power industry, including complete power plants. Two chapters are devoted to the integration of Central-European imigres into Peruan and Mexican societies in the second half of the 19th century; in the former case these were political emigres of the Kossuth family in Peru, in the latter these were Hungarian Naphegyi and Xántus families in Mexico. Another chapter presents the Czech traveller Josef Stolba’s views of the Carribean region in the same period of time. The last historical chapter is based on the analysis of archival documents mapping diplomatic relationships between Czecho slovakia and Columbia during the 2nd World War, when after the Inter-American Conference in Rio de Janeiro in January 1942 the Bogota government acknowl edged the Czechoslovak exile government in London. An important part of the relations was represented by cultural contacts, which are treated by three chapters presenting the contacts from various angles in different periods. The first one traces the reception of information on the wildlife of the New World by Central-European elites in the 16th and 17th centruries; the second one traces Cuban and Czechoslovak cooperation in cinematography in 1960s. However the scope was wider as Cuban graduates from Czechoslovak film academies and workshops influenced film production in other Latin-American countries in the fol lowing years. The influence of East-European
cinematography in Argentina in the 1950s is the topic of another chapter. The remaining three chapters cover the latest issues in Central-European and Latin American relations. The first one compares the process of the establishment of “green” parties in Chile, Brazil and Central Europe. The second analyses the institutional framework of cultural relations between the European Union and Cen tral Europe on the example of Polish cultural diplomacy, the third one describes missionary activities of the Polish congregation San Migues Arcángel in Argentine, Paraguay, Dominican Republic and Dutch Antilles in the field of education and adolescent care at the beginning of the 21st century. 224
