Zusammenfassung: | In October 1943, twenty-seven-year-old combat infantry chaplain Israel Yost arrived in Italy with the 100th Battalion, a little-known National Guard unit of mostly Japanese Americans from Hawai‘i. Yost was apprehensive when he learned of his assignment to this unusual unit composed of soldiers with whom he felt he had little in common and who were mostly Buddhists. But this would soon change. For the next nineteen months at the front—from Salerno to Monte Cassino to Anzio to Bruyeres—Yost assisted medics, retrieved bodies from the battlefield, buried enemy soldiers, struggled to bolster morale as the number of casualties rose higher and higher, and wrote countless letters of condolence, all in addition to fulfilling his ministerial duties, which included preaching in the foxholes. Although his sermons won few converts, Yost’s tireless energy and concern for others earned him admiration from his fellow soldiers, who often turned to him as a trusted friend and spiritual advisor.Forty years after the war had ended, with the help of his field diaries and the letters he had written almost daily to his wife, Yost wrote of his wartime experiences in the hopes that they might one day be published as a record of the remarkable character and accomplishments of the 100th. Combat Chaplain presents this heartfelt memoir intact. with the addition of photographs and subsequent letters and speeches by Yost and other veterans |

Yost; Michael Markrich, Monica Yost Honolulu University of Hawaii Press [2006] © 2006 1 online resource 40 illus txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (publisher's Web site, viewed 19. Jan 2018) In October 1943, twenty-seven-year-old combat infantry chaplain Israel Yost arrived in Italy with the 100th Battalion, a little-known National Guard unit of mostly Japanese Americans from Hawai‘i. Combat Chaplain presents this heartfelt memoir intact. with the addition of photographs and subsequent letters and speeches by Yost and other veterans In English USA Regimental Combat Team 442 (DE-588)4491977-3 gnd rswk-swf Japanese American soldiers World War, 1939-1945 Personal narratives, American World War, 1939-1945 Campaigns Italy World War, 1939-1945 Chaplains United States Biography Militärgeistlicher (DE-588)4169961-0 gnd rswk-swf Zweiter Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079167-1 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4006804-3 Biografie gnd-content 2\p (DE-588)4133254-4 Erlebnisbericht gnd-content USA Regimental Combat Team 442 (DE-588)4491977-3 b Zweiter Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079167-1 s Militärgeistlicher (DE-588)4169961-0 s 3\p DE-604 Markrich, Michael edt Yost, Monica edt https://www.degruyter.com/doi/book/10.21313/9780824861933 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
