NEOLITHIC AND AENEOLITHIC HOUSE ARCHITECTURE IN SOUTH-WESTERN
SLOVAKIA BASED ON THE CLAY DAUB ANALYSIS
Summary
Thecontent of the submittedstudy isjust a logical consequence of the previous attemptsbythemonograph's author,
which also included the descriptive systemserving as a launching base that created specific analytical criteria helping
toshape comparative database of clay daub, containing sample constructionelements and their mutual ties. This com
parative database of clay daub fromthe Neolithic andAeneolithic Periods insouth-westernSlovakiaprovidedvaluable
informationinanattempt tocollect andreconstruct construction-architectural units, respectivelyconstructionformsthat
theseunits create.
Thereisnodoubt that thearchitectural reconstructioniscloselyrelatedtotheground-plandisposition. Individual fin
dingsofimprintsonclaydaub, besidessomeconstructionspecificationsandparticularities, mustbeconstantlycompared
andconfrontedwithexistingground-plansthatprovidesubsequent informationdimension, orshapetheoverall viewon
thehouseor a farmbuildingarchitecturemoreclosely. Sofar undervalued, but substantial enoughonthereconstruction
of prehistoric architecture, are constructionimprints onclaydaubandfindingcontext of burnt clayplaster destructions
ofsettlement features. It was thereforeprimarynecessary tocreate some constructionandarchitectural concept through
specific constructionelements andtheir mutual tiesonlyinregardtoclaydaubfor now. Thecontent ofthis studyis thus
primarilytargetedonclaydaub, mainlybecauseofsofarhighinformationabsenceof thementionedsource. Theissueon
ground-plandispositions inthe Neolithic andAeneolithic Periods, therefore, is referredinthe text only tothe extent of
necessaryneed, without moredetailedelaboration.
Analysedclaydaub, as mentionedabove, is explicitlyfromtheNeolithicandAeneolithicsettlement sites. Inaneffort
toachieveahighvariabilityandthustoadequaterepresentativenessofcomparativedatabaseofclaydaub, itwasnecessa
rytosearchthedepositedmaterial fromindividual settlement sites. Thefact that thegreat part ofexcavationsisdeposited
inthe one place and the fact that it came mainly fromregional surroundings of south-westernSlovakia, alsohelped to
create the idea of the deposited clay daubquantity and nature. This made subsequently easier creating the criteria for
neededselection, due tothehighnumber of claydaubwiththe same constructionforms, eventuallybecause of absence
of actual constructionelements onindividual samples or significant damage of studied material. Also, a highvariabili
ty of construction elements and ties onclay daub samples and the wide range of different finding context determined
monograph's author to focus in collecting comparative samples primarily fromsouth-western Slovakia. For objective
reasons of technical nature or duetoalreadyexistingpublicationcontainingtheevaluationofanalysedclaydaub, it had
tobedesistedfromselectionof thesamplesfromsome important sitesinthe region. Thebasicinformationsourceof the
studyisthereforecomparativedatabaseofrepresentativeclaydaubsamplesoftheabovementionedsouth-westernregion
ofSlovakia, onwhichdetailedanalysewascarriedout. ItsresultingformissummarizedwithintenclearlyarrangedExcel
tables (Tables 1-11), whichnot onlyprovide thewidescope ofvarious specifiedinformationobtainedfromanalysedclay
daubsamples, but alsofast orientationbetweendataofcataloguecriteria. Comparativedatabasecontainsavisual depicti
onofconstructionformsofclaydaub, intheformofdrawingandphotocombinedplates(Plates. 1-57). Thedrawingdocu
mentationitselfcontains thesystemofcollateral informationabbreviationsandthesystemofshort andsymbolicfeatures
that give information about the main characteristics of construction elements, surface clay plaster or the nature of the
samplesurface. Duetothefact that theinformationsystemisincludeddirectlyintothedrawings, multipleinformationon
claydaubmaybepresentedincombinationandinteractiveform. Thepart ofthedrawingdocumentationare alsodigital
cross-sections of construction elements included to cross or longitudinal sample section with identificationnumber of
individual pieces of constructionelements, as well as identificationabbreviations and symbols for space-findingof clay
daub. For betterspatial imagination, drawingdocumentationevenincludes digital spatial modellingofthe construction
elements andalsoorientatedinreal space.
Individual representative samples of clay daubare definedfunctionally, or their functional applicationinhouse ar
chitectureis provided. Theactual results are thenusedinarchitectural reconstructionof individual house construction
units regarding clay daub. In the text is obviously, with clay daub closely related, the questionof interpretation and
reconstructionof decay contexts of burnt house destructions fromthe Neolithic and Aeneolithic Periods in the south
westernSlovakia.
Withinthearchaeological context fromexcavations oftheNeolithic andAeneolithicsettlements, acertainphenome
nonrarely appears whose associated expressionare well preserved inthe decaycontexts of burnt house destructions.
This phenomenonis greatlycreatedbyfavourablestorage andpreservation conditions. These are certainlyformedby
colluvial (erosive) andalluvial sediment loads that oftenmayhaveforcedtogether, therebytheprocessof preservation
was acceleratedor theyforcedinsubsequent contexts. Just suchpreservedburnt house destructions are goodevidence
of several architectural solutions and various construction forms (construction diversity of outer load-bearing walls,
existence of self-supporting construction of the ceiling with clay plaster, etc.). In Slovakia, there are only fewNeoli
thic andAeneolitic sites, the favourable storage and preservation conditions allowed touncover and document burnt
house destructions. Substantially, it concerns the excavated sites of the latephase of the Lengyel Culture as the settle
ment at Brodzany(Lengyel III; VladarlKrupica 1970), settlement at Budmerice (Epilengyel-Lengyel IV; Pavuk 1981a; 2012),
Nitra - Leningradska street (Epilengyel-Lengyel IV; LichardusfVladdr 2970), Chynorany (Epilengyel-Lengyel IV; Duris
2003; 2004; 2006; 2008; 2011a), settlement at Branc (Lengyel III up toEpilengyel-Lengyel IV; Vladar/Lichardus 1968), and
Jelsovce (Epilengyel-Lengyel IV; Pavuk/Batora 1995). Burnt house destructionoccurs alsoonthe long-lasting settlement

at Hurbanovo - Bacherov Majer (Caplovic 1955; 1956; Novotny 1958a; 195Sb; Pavitk 2002). Todate the house destruction
itself is still open (Caploznc 1956, 320), it is so far not more concretized with specified stages of the Zeliezovce Group
or the Lengyel Culture. All of these settlement sites clearly contributed not onlv to capture construction diversity of
outer house walls, but especially tothedetailed preservationandsubsequent documentationof theexistenceof ceiling
constructionwithclay plaster.
Inthe summary lookonthestudy's issuededicated the house architecture considering claydaubfromthe Neolithic
andAeneolithicPeriodsinsouth-westernSlovakiaisclear that thevarious constructionelementsandtheir mutual ties re
veal relativelyhighconstructionvariability. However, thehousearchitecturecanbeassumedalsoonthebasisoftheindi
vidual constructionunits, but it appears that therepetitionof theconstructionsolutions occurred frequently, onlvwithin
using larger or smaller modifications, suchas different tie types, interconnecting or various combinations of individual
types of construction elements. Such repetitionof constructionsolutions withcertain modifications refers mainly tothe
outer wall, the inner wall or tothe roof frontage, suchas different modifications of so-called classical wattle-and-daubFlechtwerk. However, specificrepetitionof theceilingconstructionsolutions isdetermined mainlybymethodof solving
the load-bearing principle of the ceiling construction, on which is tied directly also by the method of the load-bearing
principle of the rafter construction itself. Total detailed analysis of available, representative deposited samples of clay
daub fromeach listedNeolithic and Aeneolithic sites not only allows todefine and differentiate collateral terminology,
suchasbuilding-constructionblocks, construction-architectural units, constructionelements, constructionties, construc
tionforms, but alsoprovidedthepossibilitytocreate moredetailedclassificationintogroups.
Intheoverall view, intheNeolithic andAeneolithicarchitecture ofouter housewalls, constructionelements andties
creating diverse or slightly atypical or typical structure of wattle-and-daub inexternal walls, so called classical wattleand-daub- Flechwerk, occurredat increased rate. Furthermore, the construction forms evidencing theexistence ofsup
porting pole andload-bearing round timbers (outer load-bearing piles) occurred frequently and were incorporated into
the construction of surface fixationframe of outer perimeter walls as dense horizontally and vertically parallel, protru
dingor crossing lines either made of wattles, poleor amorphous split timbers. Suchconstructionforms, evenwithmost
horizontal wattling, mayhaverepresentedrelativelymorecomplexconstructionjoints.
Another important building-construction block is the ceiling construction. In the Neolithic and Aeneolithic house
architectureitisindeedindividual building-technological-constructionsection. Withintheframeofceilingconstruction,
construction-architectural units were observedanddefined onclay daub fromboundary line, respectivelyrefractionof
clayplaster withclay-daubplasteredupper surface, whichwas connectedtoupper edgeof theouter perimeter wall with
clay plaster. Another defined construction-architectural unit is clay plaster with plastered ceiling surface or just clay
plaster of ceiling. These units were mostly created by construction formof horizontal parallelism, vertical parallelism
of horizontal protruding or horizontal-vertical, horizontal crossing and horizontal-vertical crossing among wattle, pole
or round or split timbers (split round timbers, split planks, split poles, spit pieces- amorphous split timbers). The mini
mal thickness of the construction element in the range of approximately 1 to2 cminaverage, definingwattles, points
tothe possible existing construction detail systematically arranged protrusions of short wattles or pole timbers, which
createdinprincipleakindof fixationsystem, thestronger anchoring respectivelytying theattic clayplaster withceiling
construction made of split wood. Small thickness of construction element betweenapproximately 2,5 to4/5 cminave
rage, definingpole timbers, shows rather on the possible existence of anirregular networkmade of pole timbers, which
distributed weight andmaintainedastabilizingfunctionfor the split planks construction, and thisnetworkwas located
directly under surface ceilingconstruction made of split timbers. Or otherwise, it may indicate the presence of another
surface network made of pole timbers, split poles or amorphous split timbers. According to imprints on the Neolithic
andAeneolithic claydaub, this irregular square networkwas placed rather intothe ceiling clayplaster locatedover the
ceilingconstructionmadeofspitwood. Suchafindingwouldthusprovetheexistingnetworkofso-calledinterconnected
mat createdbycrossingofparallel andprotrudingconstructionelements. Thisnetworkshouldhaveservedas fixationor
unitingcharacter ofceilingclayplasterprovidingbettercohesionandstrength. Mediumthickconstructionelement inthe
range of approximately7to10/12cminaverage, defininground timber, assumes tocapture theremnantsofload-bearing
uprights of so-called load-bearing ceilinggrid, whichthroughasimpleone-sidedmortising, respectivelymortisejoints,
transferredtheweight oftheceilingconstructionontotheceilingframeoftheAeneolithichouse, orontothelongitudinal
load-bearing ceilingbeams of the Neolithic house. Thickconstructionelement inthe range of approximately 14to 16/20

andtheload-bearingceiling(part ofceilingframemadeofroundtimberbeam) constructionelements. Theexistinground
timber in imprinted construction formmay also indicate the construction principle of self-supporting ceiling framing
(frame) couldbeused, whichwere tiedwithsimplemortisebuildingtechnique, andsubsequentlytransferredtheweight
of the ceiling construction with clay plaster onto the outer perimeter load-bearing piles along the entire ground-plan
dispositionof house. Suchload-bearingceilingconstructionwas appliedparticularlyinthelatest phaseof theNeolithic
and primarily inthe Aeneolithic architecture. However, theexistence of the round timber inthe imprinted construction
formmayalsoindicatethat constructionelementsintheformoflongitudinal load-bearingceilingbeamscouldhavebeen
usedplacedontheperimeter, vertical, load-bearinghousewalls. But theycreatedonlyaportionoftheload-bearingbase
for a raised floor (ceiling construction), because another load-bearing base probably consisted of vertical load-bearing
beams made of three parallel lines of oval two-beamor three-beampostholes situated inthe interior house space. Such
other load-bearing ceilingconstruction solutionwas appliedprimarily inthe earlyand middle phases of the Neolithic
architecture.
Increased occurrence of the surface imprints of split wood onthe massive and heavilyburnt claydaub is primarily
evidencingceilingconstructionwithsurfaceclayplasterofattic. However, surfaceextent ofpotential ceilingconstruction

itself and its clay plaster loadbased onfindingcontext and depositedclay daubcanbe definedmore precisely only spo
radically. This isobviously determined bywell-preserved archaeological context with specific conditions providing the
preservationof burnt compact clay daubblocks.
The summary of the selected representative clay daub thus reveals the wide construction-technological spectrum,
whichwithdifferent variations and under the influence of natural construction progress had developed constantly fur
ther. Listed Neolithic and Aeneolithic sites inthe study formthe comparative database of clay daub, which creates the
certain reflective base. This however must be complemented quantitative further, edited qualitatively and reflected ob
jectivelyonthesupplyofnewfindinginformationfromfurther archaeological excavations. Thiscomparativedatabaseof
claydaubconstructionelementsmust respondflexiblyonthe confrontationoftheresultsobtainedunder interdisciplina
ryandexperimental archaeology at least.
