As author Lou Rosenblatt explains, the year 183г in Darwin’s life was crucial for the development of his theory of evolution. A century and a half of study of Darwin, the man, and his work, including close readings of his books, notebooks, letters, and even the books he read, has led to a working apprecia tion of his genius. Ihe success” of this account has, however, kept us from seeing several important issues: most notably, why did he pursue evolution in the first place? While this book is neither an almanac of 1832, nor a biography of Charles Darwin (though both arc at the heart of Rosenblatt’s work), Buckets from an English Sea offers a unique take on the factors that shaped Darwin s legendary theory and the making of him as a scientist. Stunning events early in the voyage of the Beagle chal lenged Darwin’s deeply held convic tion that people arc innately good.
Rosenblatt’s study of 1832 highlights the resources available to this young man as he worked to secure human ity’s innate goodness, most especially matters of historical criticism. LOUIS B. ROSENBLATT taught for over 30 years, chiefly at the Park School of Baltimore, but also at Leeds University and Gallaudet College. He also worked as a consultant for the Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM Education. He holds a PhD in the History of Science from the Johns Hopkins University, and an MSc in Philosophy from the London School of Economics.
