Summary
The book discusses the problem of narrativity in works of music, based on
the example of the myth of Romeo and Juliet, presented here in a broader
cultural context. It is a result of the author s interest in two themes; on the
one hand, the ways in which the Romeo and Juliet myth features in the
history of music and, on the other, whether the category of narrative can be
useful at all in researching music. It also tackles the subject of the semantics
of love and hate in music.
The story of Romeo and Juliet, because of its reach, meaning, content
and structure, carries all the characteristics of a modern myth . Even
though it is almost exclusively associated with Shakespeare, the legend as
such had featured in the oral tradition and in various epic forms long before
Shakespeare’s times. Since the Elizabethan period, however, this myth has
penetrated the collective consciousness of other sharers of European culture.
It is in fact one of the most exploited themes, along with Faust, Don Juan,
Orpheus and Eurydice, and Tristan and Isolde. Yet what distinguishes it
from these others is that its career spans from high culture all the way down
to the pop domain. The suggestively told tragedy of the lovers from Verona
softens all hearts, regardless of the level of their intellectual sophistication.
The broad impact of the story, combined with the universality and
timelessness of the theme of love against all odds, as well as the wonderfully
transparent structure of the narrative, have made the legend of Romeo and
Juliet exceptionally easy to adapt and modernize. In the canon of European
music, the so-called classical music, there are dozens of substantial works
inspired by it. The book presents a historic sketch of the theme in culture
and music, together with the interpretation of nine selected musical works
of various genres representative of the Romeo and Juliet topos, from its
origins to its resonance, seen from the narratological perspective mentioned
in the title. In this context, it is very surprising that in spite of the intense
presence of Romeo and Juliet myth in culture and music, it has not been at
all a subject of any monographic study.
The expansion of the “mega-category” that narrative is, from
literary theory to many other spheres, including the theory of music and
musicology, has encouraged the author to try and explore its meaning
and the methodological consequences it has for the theory of music.

SUM MARY
Today, narratology is an inter- and trans-disciplinary perspective whose
development is still in a very dynamic phase. Music is often discussed as
narrative, understood metaphorically. The question is, can one look at
musical works as narratives in a strict sense, with all of the methodological
consequences? Can such a perspective unveil new aspects of musical
compositions? The puzzle is more likely to be solved by making an attempt
to define what narrative is and what features actually determine whether
something is a narrative or not. In what way can narrativity manifest itself
in music?
Thinking of these issues on the basis of an example of one literary
narrative which has often been conveyed in music, including in instrumental
pieces that lack a textual layer, seems to reveal both the universal properties
of narratives about Romeo and Juliet, but also the particular characteristics of
other individual musical narratives. It also causes us reflect, more generally,
on the ways in which genre and style determine the shape of narrative. In
addition, investigating the functioning of the Romeo and Juliet theme in the
history of music, with reference to Shakespeare’s text, can point us towards
the similarities and differences between literary and musical narratives, and
provide the basis for an attempt to define the changes that have taken place
in musical narrative throughout the ages.
The book consists in four main parts, followed an appendix. Although
the ideas included in respective chapters complement each other, it is also
possible to read each chapter independently, so that readers can explore
the text as their interests dictate. It is not absolutely necessary to follow the
sheet music used in examples.
The first part presents the conceptual range of narrative that the book
is based on, and a sketch of general and musical narratology with a review
of the theory. This is linked to an appendix which includes a dictionary of
selected narratological terms.
In the second part, readers find a synthetic presentation of the history
of the Romeo and Juliet motif in culture; from pre-Shakespearean legends
to Shakespeare’s play, along with an analysis of the ways in which the
theme features today in literature, theatre, film and music. Narratological
inspirations are particularly present in the interpretation of Shakespeare’s
drama, defined as an “archetypal narrative” for its subsequent variations
and varieties (concretizations). Part two also includes a discussion on the
semantics of love and hate.
The criterion for choosing the nine (out of a few dozen in circulation)
musical works based on the myth of Romeo and Juliet for part three was their
representativeness in the history of music, on the one hand, particularly in

the aspect of their tendency to develop this specific myth in music, and
on the other the need to show the ways in which narrative is manifested
in various musical genres. The pieces chosen are: Georg Bendas singspiel
(1776), operas by Vincenzo Bellini (1830), Charles Gounod (1867) and
Pascal Dusapin (1988), a dramatic symphony by Hector Berlioz (1839),
a symphonic poem by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1869), a ballet by Sergei Prokofiev
(1936), a musical by Leonard Bernstein (1957) and Nino Rotas score to the
film directed by Franco Zefirelli (1968).
Part four includes reflections and conclusions resulting from the
comparative analysis, first regarding the narrative of the Romeo and Juliet
myth in music and then the use of the narratological perspective in music
analysis.
