SUMMARY
ULTIMA RATIO REGUM.
BELARUS IN THE NORTHERN WARS
OF THE MIDDLE OF THE 1 7TH - EARLY 1 8TH CENTURIES
Ultima ratio regum.
Summary
Throughout the middle of the 17th and on through to the early 18th century, Poland-Lithuania,
Sweden, and Russia fought to create a dominium maris baltici (or Baltic Sea dominion). In historical
studies we classify the wars fought between these powers as the Northern Wars. In the several wars that
were fought between these powers, the geopolitical and economic fabric of the entire region of
Northeastern Europe would be shaped.
In the lands, which comprise modern Belarus and its periphery, the many conflicts of this age
would prove just as destructive and devastating as the World Wars of the 20th century. These lands
were the epicentre of many tense military confrontations, which led to unprecedented demographic
decline and economic damage. According to some studies, the population of the Belarusian lands
decreased by more than twice in the result of military actions, epidemics, and hunger. The Northern
Wars would have far-reaching consequences for all aspects of the economic, social, and cultural
development of these territories in ways that still linger to this day.
The legacy of the Northern Wars explains why these conflicts are the central theme of this
exhibition. In collaboration with Mir Castle Museum and three other major museums of Belarus,
Lithuania, and Sweden we present "Ultima ratio regum. Belarus in the Northern Wars of the middle of the
17th - early 18th centuries". In cooperation with our colleagues from these institutions, we worked to
collect interesting items in order to create a complex, mosaic narrative about the wars of this epoch and
their participants.
This period of early modem warfare and the use of those techniques on the battlefield had a crucial
impact on the fortunes of the regional powers, shaping the decline of some and the rise of others. This
phenomenon is called the military revolution. This concept explains why military innovations of a
technical and structural nature (arms, tactics, and army organization) had important consequences for
the transformation of systems of government and societies in many European countries. The
centralization this period brought saw the rise of absolute monarchies all across Europe. The Northern
Wars became a battleground not only for the armies in the field but also for the states involved as they
struggled to effectively adapt to changing strategic considerations, increase their available manpower,
and supply their troops with the latest weapons.
The concept of military revolution will help us understand why the Kingdom of Sweden had
become the dominant power by the 17th century in Northeastern Europe and how it lost that status to
Russia by the 18th century. Also, these factors explain how the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth,
once the powerhouse of the region, declined and faded; Poland-Lithuania being the one major power
of Europe whose political system and economic structure would prove inadequate for a new era of
warfare.
Until recently, Belamsian historiography has treated the Swedish and Russian role in the military
events of this period with an anti-Swedish, pro-Russian bias; imposing responsibility for all negative
consequences of the wars on Sweden, while the Russia is often regarded as a defender of the Belarusian
people. Through our work on this project, which includes a comprehensive study of various period
sources, we have worked to prove that these biases are far from the reality of the time. The armies of
both Sweden and Russia (and to a certain extent even the forces of Poland-Lithuania itself) were
guided by the principle of military necessity and each placed a burden on the land in their own way.
Thus, the Belarusian lands found itself a battleground for armed confrontation by the regional powers;
as a result, these territories suffered from tremendous devastation.
Taking these factors into consideration, instead of presenting a classical war narrative, this
exhibition offers to a wider audience a narrative of various people, societies, communities, states,
military institutions, warfare culture, and technologies, their close connections and interaction. We
hope to display these facets in their regional (Baltic region, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Mir County)
and in general European context.
