What It Means To Do Phenomenology (through One of the
Possible Eyes of the Philosophy of Language)?
This article discusses several possible views of the agenda of phenomenology
from the perspective of analytical philosophy of language, and it attempts
to show how the approach of analytical philosophy can contribute to themes
that are traditionally considered to be phenomenological. First of all, it brief-
ly discusses the probem of the priority of language (which, according to
crude conceptions of the two traditions, is the basis of their opposition). In
the second and third parts, the theme of understanding and imagination is
examined, firstly in relation to things, and then in relation to persons, and
the article traces some possibilities that can be brought to this discussion if
we work with an explicit treatment of the sharing in a language.
Petr Urban
Phenomenology and Interdisciplinarity
On the Question of the Collaboration of Phenomenology with
Empirical Sciences
Is the collaboration of phenomenology with non-philosophical (particularly
empirical) scientific disciplines an opportunity for phenomenology to de-
velop its potential and show its vitality, or does it rather constitute a risk, or
even perhaps an unjustifiable excess and abandonment of its most essential
methodological principles? Contemporary and classical phenomenologists
do not adopt a united stance to this question. The Czech philosophical milieu
typically treats this problem in a black and white framework: the collabora-
tion of phenomenology with other scientific disciplines is presented either
as unproductive, even meaninglesss, or it is thought of as possible, desirable
and full of promise. The main aim of this study is to present several distinc-
tions which are designed to provide a more supple and complex approach to
the question of determining the correct possibilities and limits of the inter-
disciplinary collaboration of phenomenological philosophy.

Husserl and the Question of Embodiment as the Core of Subjectivity
The question of the relation of embodiment and subjectivity in Husserl might
be posed, for example, by asking what role and in what form and to what
extent is embodiment basic for the subjective character of experience in
the narrower, most elementary sense of the term “inner consciousness” or
inwardness, which Husserl initially analyses independently of embodiment,
in the framework of inner temporal consciousness. It would seem that in
the later genetico-phenomenological reflections which treat temporal con-
sciousness in the context of affectivity in the broad sense of the word and ki-
naesthetic experiencing (at least according to the interpretation of L. Land-
grebe, which is the basis of the presentation of this topic) bodily inwardness
and “mineful” inward experiencing are two closely connected, yet different,
fundamnetal characteristics of the life of consciousness, and that the ques-
tion of their mutual relation in Husserl remains open.
Martin Ritter
The Body as the Given
What significant role does the body play in Patocka’s phenomenology? This
study identifies the main characteristics of Patocka’s conception of body
over the course of the development of his thought. The body is the place in
which the life of consciousness is (magically) joined with the world of ob-
jects, and at the same time it is the setting (but not the means) of appearing.
The study demonstrates that the key problem of Patocka’s phenomenology
of embodiment is the one of whether body can be reduced to a given fini-
tude, or whether it has the potential to go beyond the given, thus possessing
its own kind of in-finity. The appreciation of the body in the late Patocka
assumes a methodological point of departure in motion. With the support
of this point of departure, we may defend the thesis that the whole perfor-
mance of sense is bodily, although neither body nor consciousness can be
identified with the final basis of appearing.

The Connexion of Phenomenality and Transcendentality
in the Context of Phenomenological Work with the Field
This study investigates the influence of Merleau-Ponty’s (and to an extent
Husserl s) tendency to focus on the phenomenal field in articulating the re-
lation between phenomenality and transcendentality and in weakening the
phenomenological differentiation of appearance and phenomenon. The ques-
tion is posed of how, in the context of phenomenological work with the field,
we might understand the fact that phenomenology is a transcendental philo-
sophical discipline. The study emphasises the transformative significance of
the transcendental method and prepares the way for a topological interpre-
tation of the transcendental field.

To Think from Psychedelic Experience
A Phenomenological Investigation of Psychedelic Hallucinations
This text aims to probe the vigour of phenomenology. Its starting point is
a critique. Given the fact that phenomenology is multifaceted and includes
several diverse perspectives and that individual handling of the phenomeno-
logical project can take differing forms, and also given the many critical re-
jections of different aspects of the phenomenological method, the first aim
of this text is to clarify how I understand phenomenology. This clarification
will be undertaken by a delineation of the concept of experience, especially
as it relates to the problem of the subject. I will then use the concept of ex-
perience thus delineated in my investigation of psychedelic experiences. Psy-
chedelic experiences present a specific field of phenomena and of the ways of
their givenness. If we think according to these experiencies—i.e. let ourselves
be led by them in our thinking—a view of human situatedness will open itself
to us, which is interestingly analogous to some phenomenological analyses.
I would like to demonstrate this analogous approach by way of the “theory
of the multi-faceted self”, formulated on the borders of psychology and phe-
nomenology. In other words, the aim of this text is to enter, with phenome-
nology, into the psychedelic labyrinth and record what that encounter brings,
that is, what consequences it will have on the one hand for phenomenology
as thinking from experience—and not about experience—and on the other
hand for the understanding of the domain of psychedelic experiences.

The Intencional, and Transformative Phenomenology
On the Debate between Martin Nitsche and Martin Ritter about
the Nature of Phenomenology
This discussion study addresses the debate concerning phenomenology from
the opportune problem of the intencional, which Martin Ritter and Mar-
tin Nitsche have conducted on the pages of Filosoficky Casopis. The theme
of the discussion is the contribution of Heidegger to philosophy and the
possibilities of a transformative phenomenology”. The authors are, above all,
concerned with the question of whether it is possible to treat transforma-
tive phenomenology as phenomenology, or rather as a narrative construct,
in my contribution I show that the position of Martin Nitsche is certainly
phenomenological, nevertheless that it would be helpful to moderate some
aspects of his argument (and the arguments of M. Heidegger) in view of the
objections of M. Ritter. I attempt to prove the existence of the intencional
in the context of the natural world. To this end I draw on the examples of
G. Bachelard s phenomenology of the imagination; Krtousova interpretation
of quantum mechanics; and Agamben s description of friendship. With the
help of Bachelard s theory I then attempt to present Heidegger s interpreta-
tion as the phenomenological picture of the hidden and to thus prove its phe-
nomenological relevance. Finally, drawing on Elberfeld’s interpretation of
transformative phenomenology, I defend the possibility of phenomenology
as a performative and as a training” into the connectedness of the person
and the world.
