DANUBE - THE RIVER OF EUROPE
Twenty-five of the World’s rivers are longer than the Danube, which is the
second longest European river, after the Volga, but is unique in its geographical
extent because it flows through no less than ten countries - Germany, Austria,
Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Ukraine
- and four European capitals are situated on its banks: Vienna, Bratislava,
Budapest, and Belgrade.
The figure of Danubius (Danube) at the Fontana dei Fiumi (The Fountain
of the Rivers) in the Navona Square in the ‘Eternal City’ of Rome, is a symbol
of Europe, in the same way that the La Plata (Rio de la Plata), Nile, and Ganges
represent the other continents. Similarly, the figure of Danube, in the famous
picture by Rubens, represents the ‘old continent’.
Herodotus - ‘the father of History’ - called the Danube ‘the greatest among
the rivers’. Hesiod specified that ‘the nicely flowing river’ was ‘the brother of the
Nile; son of the Ocean; and goddess of the sea’ (Thetis). Universally accepted is
the statement that the Danube is ‘as eternal as the Tiber; as fruitful as the Nile;
as majestic as the Mississippi; as beloved as the Volga; as adored as the Ganges;
and as busy as the Rhine’: in other words, it is the ‘river of Europe’ - called by
Napoleon ‘the king of rivers’.
It is as if this great river were a peculiar encyclopaedia [of time], whose
first pages were written by Aristotle, Herodotus, Strabo, Ovid, Pliny the Elder,
Tibullus, Cicero, and Virgil: it has taken part in the historical fate of peoples.
We can compare its flowing surface to a mirror, reflecting the past of Germans,
Austrians, Slovaks, Hungarians, Croatians, Serbians, Romanians, Bulgarians,
Moldavians, and Ukrainians. The French geographer Elisee Reclus was correct
in saying that:
‘rivers carry in their waves the history and life of peoples’.
The Danube flows through centuries; through the history and geography
of Europe - the cradle of our civilization. It weaves an amazing encyclopaedic
tapestry, which was called by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, in one expressive word:
‘Dunaviada’. The Bulgarian writer Yordan Yovkov (1880-1937) wrote:
Our Danube! Every time we hear that name, invisible fingers stroke the
strings of every heart. The Danube is coeval of centuries. How many events,
forming fate, how many deeds - both tragic and glorious happened here, and
what appropriate scenery for them were these banks and this river.
The table of contents of this book follows the Danubian stream from the
mountain spring, Schwarzwald, where the sources of the streams Breg and
Brigach are to be found, as well as the ‘cradle of the new bom child’ - the
karst spring Donauquelle — in the park of the Furstenberg Palace, in the town of
Donaueschingen. In these three places, there are stone slabs marking the source

of the Danube. As Hans Bogner says in his book about the Danube:
‘a difficult childbirth by three parents’.
The Danube begins its long way to the Black Sea with the natural phenomenon
Donauversickerung (the Danube Sinkhole), forming the biggest underground
river in Europe. So, the course of the Danube waterway is a progression of
towns, castles, bridges, dams, water-gates, and islands, all the way down to the
great finale of the river - its famous delta.
In the words of Johan Wolfgang von Goethe:
The stream of the river is an eternal metaphor. Therefore, time flows; passes;
flies. We leave behind the pace of days, the years of things, and the tread of life
and we know that you can never swim twice in the same water.
Our voyage along the Danube continues: even when we disembark, and are
on the bank, we don’t stop contemplating the Great River from our Danubian
window. Thus, the river continues to flow in our thoughts, as though the feather
of inspiration were dipped into the river water. In this way, the book The Danube
- River of Europe was bom. Similarly - as you ‘can never swim twice in the
same water’ - the book is not the same as the previous edition, published six
years ago. Because, during every voyage, the water is different, it whispers
new legends; awakens forgotten events; and persuades us that the river flows
magically through thousands of things: through Strauss’s Blue Danube waltz;
through The Danube - biography of a river by Claudio Margis; through the
thoughts of Yovkov about Our Danube; through the idylls of Rakitin; through
The Tongue Set Free by Elias Canetti. It flows through Codine by the Braila,
Panait Istrati; sees its reflection in the essays of the citizen of Belgrade, Momo
Kapor; shines in Description du Danube by Count Luigi Ferdinando Marsili; and
in the Donau Bulgarien in der Balkan by Felix Kanitz. Nora Kircher presents us
with the Danube in myths, legends, and stories; and Michael Weithmann offers
us the monograph The Danube: the encyclopaedia has no end.
Our lens finds newer and newer pictures of Donauquelle; of the phenomenonal
Danubian Sinkhole; of Sigmaringen, the Schloegen, Shonbuel, and Wachau; of
the four Danubian capitals - Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and Belgrade; of
Babakay and Golubac; and onward to the delta - the glorious finale of the river’s
symphony.
