DEFAMATION OF COATS OF ARMS IN THE MIDDLE AGES
Defamation of coats of arms was as visual and public as heraldry itself. Since the 13th century
one’s physical death was visualised by turning the shield with the arms upside down. The same
method (subversio armorurn) was adopted for the defamation of arms which demonstrated the social
death of its bearer. Public defamation of arms was a part of a denobilisation ceremony, at which
a symbolic funeral showed the person was dead for society. Along with that the defamation could
be conducted through pouring black paint over the shield, throwing it onto the earth, dragging it,
trampling on it or performing other shaming activities.
In the beginning of the 14th century the defamation of arms turned into a penalty for treason
and perjury. In the 15th century subversio armorum was combined with executio in effigie. It was also
the time of appearance of infamant letters which mostly recorded civil disputes between debt-
ors, creditors and guarantors. Defamation in such letters was done in appliance not only to the
shield, but to the man himself, so it was no longer a heraldic punishment, but an important means
of social interaction.

ENGLISH THIRTEENTH-CENTURY ROLLS OF ARMS,
CRADLE OF FRENCH BLAZON
The bulk of extant thirteenth-century armorials is written in various dialects of Old French,
however the data they contain allow us to assign them as either “English” or “French”. Beside the
fact that the English ones constitute an absolute majority, they present more stable grammatical
constructions and terminology in blazon, which gives ground to conclude that the heraldic no-
menclature in England had setded much earlier. The result of the research suggests that English
heraldry became the mover of the blazon development.

FLAGS OF THE INCAS IN THE TIME OF CONQUISTA
The article is dedicated to the existence of Inca flags as such, and to the placement of some
coats of arms on them. Were there in fact both of them? Inca flags had a specific shape, without
providing images on them. Only by the end of the colonial period on the flags used by the Incas
there appeared coats of arms.

BRANCH IN THE NECROPOLIS OF THE NEW JERUSALEM RESURRECTION
MONASTERY
Our study into the origins of the coat of arms of the Bestuzhev-Ryumin family aristocrat-
ic branch from the necropolis of the New Jerusalem Resurrection Monastery has uncovered
a noteworthy regularity suggesting that this family coat of arms was under the defining influence
of the coat of arms of their titled relatives, Counts Bestuzhev-Ryumin.

GREAT CATHEDRAL
The article focuses on the description of two coats of arms from the basement of the Donskoy
Monastery Great Cathedral: one from the tomb of Lieutenant General Mikhail Potemkin (1744—
1791), brought to the Donskoy Monastery from the St Nicholas Church in the village of Nikolskoe-
Kolchevo, and the other formerly belonging to Cavalry General Alexey Ilovaysky (d. 1797), still
preserved on the surviving fragment of his tomb.

ANCIENT RUSSIAN HERALDIC PENDANTS OF THE 10th - 11th CENTURIES
(IMAGES, CLASSIFICATION, CHRONOLOGY)
Ancient Russian heraldic pendants are objects made of metal (silver, silver with gilding, copper
alloys) or bone, of trapezoid or similar shape. These small objects bear images of insignia (coats
of arms) of Russian princes of the 10th — 11th centuries (bidents and tridents) displayed on one
or both sides, alongside with pictorial signs of individual types (a flag, an aurochs horn, a sword-ham-
mer, a sword-spear, an anchor, a bird). At the moment, over 60 such objects are known (see table).
Metal pendants served as credentials of the prince’s officials. Bone pendants were children’s toys.

ALLEGORICAL IMAGES OF PETER THE GREAT AS COMPONENT
OF IMPERIAL MYTHOLOGY: IMAGE OF NEPTUNE
The article analyses general trends in the formation of Peter the Great’s visual image of and
his glorification as maritime ruler. The author focuses on the matters related to Russia’s Imperial
history and viewed through the allegorical symbolism of triumphal arches, engravings, paintings,

“conclusions”, geographical maps, medals and drawings. It is known that a variety of symbols was
used to promote and establish desired images of European monarchs, thus creating the sacral aura
of power. Petrine Russia was no exception to the employment of such means of ideological influ-
ence. But the overall Baroque tradition with its panegyric eulogies, tropes and emphatic interest
in emblems and allegories took some very eclectic forms in Russia. As the Russian Empire was being
established as maritime power, the pride of place in the allegorical scenario was given to the figure
of Roman god Neptune, reinterpreted in the Christian tradition and occupying a very important
place in the forming of the state image.

HERALDIC ITEMS FROM THE PASKEVICH HOUSE IN THE COLLECTION
OF THE STATE HERMITAGE NUMISMATIC DEPARTMENT
The article focuses on sphragistic and heraldic items originally owned by the Princes Paskevich-
Erivansky/Eriwanski and currently kept at the State Hermitage Numismatic Department. Of spe-
cial interest is one of the seals bearing the coat of arms of Count Ivan Paskevich- Erivansky,
Prince of Warsaw (1782—1856), and a fire screen with a “wedding” coat of arms of Princess Irina
Paskevich-Erivanskaya, nee Countess Vorontsova-Dashkova (1835—1925). Archival documents are
used to trace the history of the acquisition of these pieces for the Numismatic Department from
the family’s St Petersburg mansion.

The article is dedicated to the provenance of heraldic insignia, primarily the state coat of arms,
on the RSFSR and USSR postal stamps between 1918 and 1941. It traces the emergence of he-
raldic emblems, the image of the hammer and sickle, the abbreviation RSFSR on postal stamps.
The article analyses the reasons for the late use of the USSR state coat of arms and flag, as well as
coats of arms of Union republics, on Soviet postal stamps.

THE IMPERIAL IN THE SOVIET: HERALDIC HERITAGE
OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN SOVIET CITY SYMBOLS (1960s - 1980s)
The paper discusses the use of elements of pre-1917 heraldry in Soviet cities5 emblems and
coats of arms after Stalin. The author argues that such elements were employed to create imagi-
nary continuity with pre-Soviet history. The authors of the new symbols created alternative, local
visions of space and time in which the Soviet present was not in opposition to the Imperial past
while the new coats of arms and emblems constituted a challenge to the symbolic order imposed
by the centre.

REGIMENTAL BADGES AND TOKENS FROM THE MUSEUM OF MILITARY
HISTORY OF ARTILLERY, ENGINEERING AND SIGNAL TROOPS COLLECTIONS
The museum collections tell the story of the emergence, creation, introduction and provenance
of the Russian army lapel badges and tokens in the late 19th — early 20th century. These include
watercolours of the badges and tokens with marks of superior approval, sample badges from
the collection of the the Chief Intendancy, regimental correspondence containing descriptions
of the badges and tokens, requests for their approval and regulations for wearing. All of these materi-
als reveal how the legislative framework for the Russian army lapel badges was formed, disclose the
difference between anniversary and regimental badges which were an official element of the attire.
A unique collection of drawings of the Moscow Life Guards Regiment lapel badge makes
it possible to see the process of designing of regimental badges and tokens. Over 60 watercolours
were painted by officers for the best badge design competition.
The badges and multiple tokens of the Kexholm Life Guards Regiment have survived. The at-
tribution of some of them is still disputed, such as an unusual Kexholm anniversary badge which
does not feature a monogram of the reigning Emperor.

THE AUTHORSHIP OF THE MONUMENT TO THE DEEDS
OF THE LIFE GUARDS COMBAT ENGINEER BATTALION.
AN UNKNOWN SKETCH BY ANDREY STACKENSCHNEIDER
The article presents the unknown facts of the creation of the famous symbol of the Sapper
Life Guards — the monument to the Deeds of the Life Guards Combat Engineer Battalion. Until
recently the author of the monument has been considered unknown. It was constructed by the
order of Emperor Nicholas I in 1853 and originally placed in the Peterhoff sappers summer
camp. In 1899 it was moved to St Petersburg and put up near the battalion Church of SS Cosmas
and Damian. The Museum of Military History of Artillery, Engineering and Signal Troops keeps
the sketch for the monument by Audrey Stackenschneider (1802—1865), a court architect and
Professor of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. In accordance with archival documents modifi-
cations and additions to the design were made by Emperor Nicholas I.

The article covers the history of the system of distinction and rank signs in Sverdlovsk Region.
The region is known for its faithful adherence to the methodological recommendations of the
Heraldic Council of the President of the Russian Federation. The region has a Symbols Committee
which carries out a lot of educational projects for municipal representative bodies, gives them com-
prehensive support and undertakes mandatory preliminary audits of all new awards.

AND MUNICIPAL LEVELS (CASE STUDY OF KIROV REGION)
The article is a case study of Kirov Region with regard to the development of the regional
and municipal awards system from design to official approval and inclusion in the State Heraldic
Register of the Russian Federation. It proves that it is necessary to involve heraldry and awards
experts and to improve the regulatory framework relating to municipal and regional awards.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LEGAL INSTITUTIONALISATION OF MUNICIPAL
ENTITIES5 OFFICIAL INSIGNIA IN THE CHUVASH REPUBLIC
The article discloses why the process of institutionalisation of municipal insignia is getting
more complicated at the current stage, and offers a mechanism of institutionalising the coats
of arms of public and legal entities, which consists of two interrelated stages, namely legalisation
and legitimisation of the official attribute. Special emphasis is placed on coining the term “legiti-
macy of arms”, with a suggestion that each official symbol must have a state registration.
The article discusses the specific and general tendencies in the legal institutionalisation
of Chuvashia’s municipal insignia at the current stage; it classifies the republic’s municipal arms
based on the legitimacy principle; it summarises the outcomes of the coats of arms legitimisation
process, uncovers the problems of municipal arms design and points towards solutions: compliance
with heraldic rules and modern legislation when designing insignia. Modern heraldry requires the
symbolic designation of a municipal entity to be clearly defined by regulations. Legitimacy is a most
important component of a modern coat of arms of a municipal entity, which makes it possible
to perform legal functions effectively in order to designate the jurisdiction of the local authorities.
When characterising the current state of Chuvash heraldry, one may note that the empirical as-
pect of the science is evolving towards the theoretical one, marked by a scholarly, analytical character
of regional and municipal insignia. In the practical dimension, a new trend in Chuvash arms design
is linked with the name of the heraldic artist Vadim Shipunov, who was able to establish a truly
scientific trend in the development of Chuvash municipal heraldry and create over a hundred le-
gitimate official symbols for municipal (urban, regional, rural) entities in the Republic of Chuvashia.
The author is convinced that the local experience of Chuvashia in studying the process of legal
institutionalisation of municipal entities’ official insignia is important for developing the theoretical
and legal provisions of modern Russian heraldry.

OF STRUCTURES OF MODERN RUSSIAN MUNICIPAL ARMS
The article analyses the diversity of modern municipal coats of arms which are locally designed
without professional participation. As a result, a conflict arises between the professional aspect

and social opinions influenced by the symbolic culture of the Soviet period (the state coat of arms
of the USSR, urban pseudo-arms of the 1960s — 1980s, an excessively serious attitude to arms
design). Hence a great number of complex, informationally rich but inexpressive coats of arms.

THE BEAVER: WHEN DID A RODENT APPEAR ON THE IRKUTSK COAT
OF ARMS?
The article dispels the popular historiographic notion that Baron Koehne is to blame for the ap-
pearance of the beaver on the Irkutsk coat of arms. It explores the first appearance of the beaver

MYTHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS IN LOCAL KOMI
AND UDMURT HERALDRY
The article analyses the modern coats of arms of two neighbouring regions with predominantly
Finno-Ugric population, whose creators have chosen to rely on mythological imagery. The sources
for this group of coats of arms consist of archaeological artefacts, traditional patterns and ethno-
graphic descriptions. The coats of arms approved by official documents at the regional and munici-
pal level do not simply reinterpret ethnic traditions but introduce new myths and create favourable
conditions for their dissemination.
