Zusammenfassung: | Dr Susan Walker tells the story of Charles Wilshere's passionate interest in early Christian and Jewish archaeology. His collection was formed in Italy from 1860-1880 and has mostly been on public display ever since, in London and Oxford, where it is now shown in the Ashmolean Museum. The collection includes gold-glass and gravestones from two interesting collections of the southern Italian enlightenment, and Jewish tombstones from the Vigna Randanini. Recent examination of the gold-glass has revealed interesting new information about how the glass was made in fourth-century Rome. The collection also offers a glimpse of the religious and social history of fourth-century Rome: Christians were discouraged from honouring their dead in pagan style with exuberant funerary feasts, and instead were encouraged to honour the memory of Christian martyrs. The Jewish community shared the traditional enthusiasm for feasting at the grave, and bought their gold-glass from the same workshops |

The Jewish community shared the traditional enthusiasm for feasting at the grave, and bought their gold-glass from the same workshops Ashmolean Museum (DE-588)1007560-4 gnd rswk-swf Wilshere Collection (DE-588)115124290X gnd rswk-swf Goldglas (DE-588)4157849-1 gnd rswk-swf Sarkophag (DE-588)4051698-2 gnd rswk-swf Sammlung (DE-588)4128844-0 gnd rswk-swf Inschrift (DE-588)4027107-9 gnd rswk-swf Rom (DE-588)4050471-2 gnd rswk-swf Italien Süd (DE-588)4072965-5 gnd rswk-swf Art, Early Christian / Private collections / England / Oxford / Catalogs Glassware, Roman / England / Oxford / Catalogs Sarcophagi, Roman / England / Oxford / Catalogs (DE-588)4163417-2 Katalog gnd-content Museen & Sammlungen (DE-2581)TH000008291 gbd Sarkophage, christlich (DE-2581)TH000008324 gbd Christliche Archäologie (DE-2581)TH000005826 gbd Christliche Epigraphik (DE-2581)TH000005828 gbd Ashmolean Museum (DE-588)1007560-4 b Wilshere Collection (DE-588)115124290X u Sammlung (DE-588)4128844-0 s DE-604 Rom (DE-588)4050471-2 g Italien Süd (DE-588)4072965-5 g Sarkophag (DE-588)4051698-2 s Inschrift (DE-588)4027107-9 s Goldglas (DE-588)4157849-1 s Walker, Susan 1948- (DE-588)171477154 edt Leatherbury, Sean V. 1984- (DE-588)1150185163 ctb Rini, David (DE-588)132847957 ctb |
