We dedicate this volume to the memory of Kai Larsen (1926-2012) and Gunnar Sei-
denfaden (1908-2001), both members of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and
Letters and deeply committed to the study of tropical plants They were always con
vinced that Danish scientists should play a role in the study of botany in the tropics,
and they inspired and encouraged us in our work in South America, Africa and South
East Asia
