Zusammenfassung:"The American Chemical Society has given this award annually since 1954 in recognition of distinguished achievements in nuclear chemistry and related fields. Joe Natowitz has won the award for his distinguished research record in the field of heavy-ion reactions. Over a period of nearly three decades, Joe and his collaborators have made numerous seminal contributions to our understanding of this field in areas such as fusion reactions between complex nuclei, strongly damped collisions and the properties of hot nuclei. An international group of more than thirty scientists, made up of Joe's colleagues and friends, spoke at the three-day Award Symposium. Current research on heavy-ion reactions over a wide range of energy was the main topic of the discussion. Talks were presented also on related subjects such as atomic physics studies using heavy ion collisions, nuclear deformations and astrophysics. Joe's own recent research has dealt with heavy ion reactions in the intermediate energy regime; as many of the leading groups in this area of research were represented at the symposium, we believe that we have here a good snapshot of this vibrant field at this particular time."--Foreword
